Cargo Additives Expand Cargo Treatment Options Additive treatments expand the variety of crude oil and fuel cargos to include those you may have had second thoughts about trading in the past. Clients can handle a wider range of oil commodity products thanks to innovative, patented and proven technologies. We specialise in treating US Domestic ULSD to meet European EN590 or LATAM specifications for gas oil depending on the destination of the cargo. This service enables our clients to purchase a specific grade of ULSD and upgrade it to another. The primary parameters treated for are cetane number, lubricity, conductivity and cold filter plugging point (CFPP). Our global network allows Intertek to offer this service at the loadport, the disport, or anywhere in between. H2s Management Solutions Intertek has extensive experience treating very high H2s cargos of up to 7,000ppm and have recently been treating between 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 barrels per month. Intertek s expertise ensure that if a client has high H2s fuel oil cargo that needs to be discharged at a terminal which restricted H2s content, within hours of the initial request, the cargo can be treated and approved for unloading at the terminal. In one of Intertek s H2s projects, a 110,000 barrel gasoline cargo, scheduled for shipment, was failing a quality test for hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan sulfur. The producer wanted to avoid expensive blending and product storage costs. An additive treatment solution was rapidly identified and the appropriate cargo treatment made. After treatment the gasoline was approved for shipment with time to spare, saving the operator more than $250,000 in demurrage, purchasing and testing costs. 3

CASE STUDY PANAMA CANAL FUEL CARGO TREATMENT FAST TURNAROUND ON CARGO ADDITIVE Region Americas Intertek Solutions Petroleum Cargo Treatment A client was shipping a high value cargo of diesel fuel from the US Gulf Coast to Peru via the Panama Canal. The cargo needed to be treated with additives to meet specications for lubricity and conductivity. Intertek combined our local Panamanian inspection, testing and treat operations. additives and technical support, providing a cargo treatment result that met and exceeded the client s requirements and expectations. Because Intertek were able to quickly put the cargo treatment staff, equipment and additives where and when the client needed them, the client sold the cargo at a fair price and saved a signicant amount of transportation and demurrage time and costs. Oil Tanker Vessel anchored at Panama Canal The Challenge Intertek was asked to treat an ultra-low sulfur diesel cargo aboard ship for conductivity and lubricity. The team had only a 10 hour window of opportunity when the tanker was staged in the Colon harbor in Panama, prior to the boarding of the canal pilot and the transiting of the canal. If the operation exceeded the allotted time it would cause an expensive 1-3 day delay in transiting the canal, along with associated demurrage costs The Solution Intertek received the cargo treatment order from the client, and quickly put a plan of action together to meet the client s needs. Intertek personnel, using state-of-the-art dosing apparatus, successfully treated the cargo while the ship was waiting to transit the Panama Canal from the Atlantic side to the Pacifc. Samples taken from the tanker were quickly sent to the Intertek laboratory at Balboa, Panama, for cargo inspecication testing and confirmation. During the planning meeting with vessel personnel and the shipping agent, it was discovered that the vessel would be delayed in midtransit, due to heavy ship trac in the Panama Canal. This allowed the vessel to complete the mixing of the cargo and gave Intertek the opportunity to sample the ship s cargo before it exited the canal on the Port of Balboa, Pacific side. Using the Intertek Panama laboratory located near Panama City, Intertek personnel promptly ran the required specifcation tests and provided the client a passing report before the vessel completed the canal transit. Intertek s swift sampling and testing service eliminated 10 to 12 hours in demurrage that would have been needed to sample and test the cargo while the vessel was at anchorage on the Pacic side in Balboa, which is typical for this sort of operation 6
CARGO ADDITIVE TREATMENT CASE STUDY FUELING THE ALASKAN WINTER GOING TO THE ENDS OF EARTH TO HELP OUR CLIENTS Region Americas Intertek Solutions Petroleum Cargo Treatment A rare late season Storm of the Century in November 2011 blocked an important delivery of heating oil and gasoline to Nome, Alaska before the winter season rendered the ice pack impassable by conventional shipping. By the time the weather calmed down, Nome was already iced-in and it was confirmed that there would be no final fall delivery. At that time, it looked certain that the community would run out of fuel in the spring. additives and technical support, providing a cargo treatment result that met and exceeded the client s requirements and expectations. We are pleased Intertek could assist us in both Dutch Harbor and Nome for this critical operation. Intertek was able accommodate the dynamic schedule and provide rapid fuel testing and gauging results Mark Smith, CEO of Vitus Marine The Challenge In order to meet Nome s urgent fuel needs a local fuel distributor, Vitus Marine, chartered the Russian ice-class tanker Renda and with help from the US Coast Guard ice-breaker Healy attempted the first ever winter-delivery of fuel to Nome. Onsite fuel quality and quantity inspection was going to be required not only at Nome, but in South Korea and Dutch Harbor, Alaska, during deep winter in the North Pacific and the Bering Sea. In addition to formidable logistical challenges, the use of a foreign vessel to move cargo from one US port to another required anprecedented waiver of the Jones Act, a law designed to protect US shipping interests. The Solution Because of Intertek s local expertise and reputation in the Alaskan fuel industry, Intertek was chosen to provide key inspection and testing services. First, we consulted with the client to help them determine if the fuels they intended to deliver were suitable for Nome s harsh weather conditions. Arrangements were then made for Intertek personnel to attend the loading of ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) in South Korea. After the Korean ULSD loading the ship called on Dutch Harbor, Alaska, a remote Aleutian Island terminal, which fuels the crab fleet. Our inspector attended the loading of gasoline at Dutch Harbor and both cargoes were sampled, with the samples express shipped to our Los Angeles (Signal Hill) laboratory for testing. From Dutch Harbor the tanker headed to Nome. The Renda tailed behind the US Coast Guard Cutter Healy for the 700 mile trip, the last 300 miles through the Arctic pack-ice. After a week of pushing ahead, the tanker and Cutter arrived at Nome. The Intertek inspector attended the vessel for determination of delivery quantity for commercial and US Customs purposes, working under grueling Arctic weather conditions with ambient temperatures plunging to -35 F, and wind chills significantly lower. Cargo samples of both fuels were tested on-site prior to delivery to determine suitability for the customer. Intertek is proud to have played an important role in ensuring the people of Nome Alaska have sufficient, quality, fuel supplies for their long Winterthis sort of operation 7
