BF60 2009 HONDA BF60 EFI AUSTRALIAN PRODUCT GUIDE (information correct as at 1 May 2009)
HONDA RELEASES BRAND NEW BF60 OUTBOARD Honda s brand new BF60 four-stroke EFI outboard engine expands the premium product range available to Australian boaters. Slotting in between the widely-acclaimed BF40/50 and BF75/90, the new BF60 combines exclusive Honda technologies in a lightest-weight-in-class package that delivers best-in-class performance. Weighing 110kg, the newly-designed, water-cooled, 998cm3 three-cylinder engine incorporates electronic fuel injection, Honda s revolutionary Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST ) air/fuel ratio and ignition-timing technology, and lean burn control to deliver powerful start-up and acceleration together with outstanding fuel economy during cruising (ECOmo). A high-performance gear case further contributes to the BF60 s impressive acceleration and top-end speed. Along with its powerful 17amp alternator, the BF60 is also NMEA2000 compatible, which allows the engine to communicate with onboard electronics to deliver a wide-range of information to head-unit displays. Sporting a futuristic new look that reflects its superior performance, the BF60 is available in remote control (including a Power Thrust model) and tiller versions. Among its many features, the multi-function tiller handle incorporates a power trim-tilt switch which is conveniently located in the throttle grip, so the engine can be easily trimmed while underway allowing the operator to remain completely focused on the water. Consistently leading the world in environmental performance, the smooth and quiet-running BF60 exceeds the latest US EPA emissions standards the most stringent in the world; 2008 CARB standards; and domestic Japanese voluntary regulations. The new BF60 will also achieve the Outboard Engine Distributors Association s (OEDA) three-star rating for ultra-low emissions. Covered by Honda s five-year warranty, the new BF60 will be available through Honda s national marine dealer network in the second half of the year. LIGHTWEIGHT AND COMPACT At just 110kg, the BF60 is the lightest weight engine in its class. The compact design is the result of the three-cylinder engine layout and the use of super-strong lightweight materials such as an aluminium mount frame, resin oil strainer, resin lower mount cover and resin inlet manifold. Timing belt made of new high-durability material Resin inlet manifold 4-valve 998cm 3 3-cylinder Lightweight resin oil strainer Lightweight aluminium mounting frame Lightweight resin lower mount cover
OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE Honda s revolutionary Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST ) air/fuel ratio and ignition-timing technology was first employed in Honda s BF75/90, more recently in the completely-redesigned BF40/50 and now in the new BF60. BLAST utilises MBT Minimum advance for Best Torque trace control, which is based on basic engine ignition timing theory. By linking the ignition timing control of the engine to the air/fuel ratio, it sets the optimum timing via computer control. BLAST traces the air/fuel ratio that results in the maximum torque for each engine revolution, while simultaneously tracing the maximum knock limit ignition timing that can be obtained using a rich air/fuel ratio in the full throttle zone, and advances the ignition timing to the limit, in order to produce greater torque. This boost in horsepower and torque at low rpm contributes to strong hole shot performance to get the hull up on plane quickly! Hole shot performance through BLAST
Along with Honda s Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI), the BF60 incorporates Lean Burn Control technology, which allows combustion to operate on a leaner air/fuel ratio than stoichiometric air/fuel. An O 2 sensor, together with the ECU, precisely controls the air/fuel mixture for the best fuel economy at cruise setting. The mode in which Lean Burn Control is used during cruising to achieve greater fuel economy is referred to as ECOmo (Economy Controlled Motor). Lean Burn Control kicks-in during cruise conditions.
MULTI-FUNCTION TILLER HANDLE The BF60 s multi-function tiller handle incorporates a power trim-tilt switch in the throttle grip, so the operator can trim the engine while underway and remain completely focused on the water. In addition to the conveniently-located power trim-tilt button, other tiller handle functions including handle height adjustment, throttle friction adjustment and tool-less steering grip friction adjustment. The BF60 also has a reversible shift lever, which can be mounted on either the left or right side. TROLLING CONTROL SWITCH The tiller handle also comes standard with a trolling control switch, which allows the operator to make fine speed adjustments (per 50rpm between 750rpm and 1000rpm) with a single switch operation. The BF60 also has an answer-back function which informs the operator of a change of trolling mode and rotation adjustments via a buzzer-type alarm.
POWER THRUST MODEL A Power Thrust model (BFP60) is also available in remote control configuration only at this stage. Its large gear case allows mounting of a propeller one size larger than that best suited to the standard BF60. The Power Thrust gear case and larger diameter propeller results in greater thrust, which is particularly useful in commercial applications. Large reduction ratio, 2.33 14 crossed propeller The large propeller is slowly turned, producing a large thrust and allowing the propeller to work well at low speeds. Accordingly, the manoeuvrability of heavy vessels is improved. Optimum draft depth Large cavitation plate An optimum propeller depth relative to the engine power is determined, which suppresses the increase of underwater resistance. This, along with a large cavitation plate, makes the ventilation more efficient. A stable high thrust is produced. Large capacity gear The largeness leads to improved durability and reliability. Reverse port In the reverse mode, exhaust gas is entangled in the propeller. This phenomenon is turned into a strong reverse thrust by a newly adopted large-capacity reverse-port. SUPERIOR BATTERY CHARGING In another best-in-class performance, the BF60 s multi-pole AC generator (ACG) provides 22amps of battery charging capacity! Ample power for onboard marine electronics, livebait tanks and other equipment. NMEA2000 COMPATIBLE As an NMEA2000 compatible engine, the BF60 has the ability to communicate with onboard electronics to deliver a wide-range of information to head-unit displays. When networked with a Lowrance HDS unit, for example, engine data such as speed, revs, temperature, fuel usage and other data can be displayed on the unit s screen. While owners of remote control engines may still prefer individual gauges, the BF60 s NMEA2000 compatibility is huge news for owners of tiller models.
RELIABILITY AND DURABILITY Honda is renowned the world over for its product reliability and durability the BF60 is no exception. Corrosion resistance is enhanced by using a new and highly durable material for the timing belt and by intelligent positioning of the sacrificial anode in pathway of engine cooling water. Timing belt made of new high-durability material Water through top cover for tougher resistance to water intrusion inside cover Resin inlet manifold for low noise Fuel strainer to catch water and debris Large capacity idle chamber reduces noise Long-span rubber mounting for minimal vibration Water-trap exhaust pipe increases exhaust system s resistance to corrosion Large splash plate to reduce spray Forward mouted water pick-up for better water intake (cooling) Large sacrificial anode increase tolerance to corrosion New model gear case for reduced water resistance
ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE Honda s advanced engineering ensures noise from the BF60 is negligible. Its smooth and quiet operation is the result of long-span rubber mounting, resin inlet manifold and large capacity idle chamber all of which contribute to reducing vibration and noise. Consistently leading the world in environmental performance, the smooth and quiet-running BF60 exceeds 2008 CARB emissions standards the most stringent in the world; US EPA standards for 2006; and domestic Japanese voluntary regulations. The new BF60 also achieves the Outboard Engine Distributors Association s (OEDA) three-star rating for ultra low emissions. Honda has also calculated the BF60 is 97 per cent recyclable.
