Helical Fittings EXCLUSIVE AUSTRALIAN DISTRIBUTORS

B4/1 Introduction in helical fittings Helical fittings are composed of single helical rods which -according to the respective application - are separate or preassembled, straight or looped on delivery. Helical fittings involve such a variety of applications that still nowadays, it cannot be forseen for which applications of everyday life they can be used too. This catalogue volume B4 in respect of the application of helical fittings mainly refers to electrical engineering and especially to the use on overhead lines and distribution systems. Preformed accessories can be used to tension, to suspend and to connect conductors, cables, glass fiber rods and also solid rods as for instance guys. In addition preformed accessories are employed to protect or to repair conductors, for attachment to post insulators, as spacers on bundled conductors and for tensioning the suspension of street lighting. They are also successfully used to mark conductors against collision of birds with them (bird flight diverters). Preformed accessories have very successfully been used since 1950. The employment of helical fittings is not at all limited to overhead lines only. Preformed accessories in a large measure are also used for the construction of antennas, radar stations etc. The helical fittings included in this catalogue volume have introduced a new design in Germany which distinguishes by its simplicity and reliability. The Richard Bergner Company has started the production of helical fittings in 1959 and in the meantime, the helically fittings designs have been adapted to the specific requirements in Germany and Europe. The effect of helical fittings is mostly based on the principle of development of a low unit pressure over a large area: The inside diameter of the unloaded helical rods is slightly smaller than the outside diameter of conductor, cable or solid rod. By wrapping the helical rods on a conductor, a spring tension is created producing the necessary frictional contact. This spring tension is of elastic nature and ensures a constant gripping. If conductor, cable or solid rod are subject to tension load, the gripping force increases as the tension load increases. The inside of helical rods may be sanded or the conductor surface be covered with a friction bond to improve the contact. The gripping force in any case is so high that under tension load - correct dimensioning provided rather the conductor fails than the fitting. To ensure the full performance, the helical fitting must exactly be adapted to the outside diameter of conductor, cable or solid rod. In addition, helical fitting and outer strand of conductor must be of same lay direction. Unless specified otherwise, helical fittings are of right-hand lay on delivery. Hence, it is necessary to specify on order if helical fittings for left-hand lay conductors are required. In general, helical fittings are made from a material similar to that of conductor or solid rod providing thus a corrosion resistance of fitting equal to that of conductor or rod. The helical rods can be installed without use of any tool. Incorrect assembly is almost impossible. It can be detected by eyesight whether accessory was correctly installed. Hence, helical fittings can be installed by unskilled workers. Mounting instructions are available on demand (see also catalogue). Helical fittings are provided with a label stating for which funtion and for what conductors, cables or solid rods the respective accessory is designed for. In addition you find data of production on it securing actions according to DIN EN ISO 9001. It is recommended to remove this label only immediately before assembly or better - if possible - don t remove it. The label is weather-resisting and will still be legible if it has been exposed to the open air for a longer time. Helical fittings are largely protected by patents or registration of designs. In case that helical fittings are required for applications not specified in this catalogue a specific enquiry is requested. Helical fittings can be used: - to tension - to suspend - to fix - to splice - to repair - to armor - to protect against damage at - to protect against abrasion at - to reduce stress at - to mark - to space - to damp vibrations - to pull (installation) - to shunt weak splices at - as interphase spacer at - to rise diameter of stranded conductors, cables and solid conductors. Attention! The lay direction of the line spices has to be equal the lay direction of the outside cable layer. For repair purpose you also can use line splices in parts (e. g. use only the green marked splice for aluminium). Mounting instruction: 1. Straighten the ends of the conductor, tie them together and cut them off straight-line. 2. Uncover the steel core by removing the aluminium strands at liberally half the length of the line splice for the steel core (blue mark). Attention: do not damage the steel core. 3. Tie the ends of the steel core and the aluminium strands together securely. 4. Clean the aluminium strands at both ends at liberally half the length of the green marked line splice for the aluminium coat. For this purpose we recommend using a wire scratch brush, e.g. according to sheet B198/1. 5. Mounting the line splice Place the first set of rods of the steel core line splice (blue mark) with the colour mark at the end of the steel of one conductor and coil it up. Mounting becomes easier when you start coiling up the set with some distance from the end of the steel core. However you have to pay attention that the set s blue mark is in accordance with the end of the steel core after coiling up. Place the end of the steel core of the second conductor on the centre mark of the rod set and coil it up as well. There should be a small air gap between the ends of the steel cores. Coil up the remaining sets as well, in the same way, starting near the steel core joint. If the sets consist of an unequal number of rods, the set with the smallest number of rods should be coiled up at last. The filler rods (black mark) have to be coiled up the same way. The blue and the black marks have to align with each other. If there is a difference in diameter between the steel core and the aluminium outside layer it is necessary to attach two filler rods according to the indications in the table. with a rod diameter of 6,35 mm for the line splice for the aluminium coat Place the first set of rods starting from the conductor joint in a way that the green and the black mark align with each other. Coil up the set on one side, and on the other side subsequently. Place the second set close to the first one and coil it up onto the conductor in a parallel way to the first set. The same procedure has to be carried out with the remaining sets. with a rod diameter of 7,87 mm for the line splice for the aluminium coat Apply a thin but closed layer of the antifriction paste on the conductor surface. The antifriction paste can be applied by hand or with a paint brush. Place the first rod with the green mark on the black mark of the filler rod and coil it up on one side and after that on the other side. The same procedure has to be carried out with the remaining rods, whereas the rods have to be close to each other. 6. Cleaning the line splice. Materials: Rods made of aluminium alloy, the inside surface of the rod sets is gritted up to D 1 = 22,5 mm. Application: Line splices VA are used as full tension splices for AAC conductors. For ACSR and AACSR conductors they can be usred as non-tension splices. The line splices with rod dia. 6,35 mm are delivered in premounted rod sets. The contact surface of the rod sets is gritted. All line splices with a rod dia. 7,87 mm are delivered as single rods. Friction paste has to be applied to the conductor surface before installation. All line splices have a centre marking. Important! The lay direction of the line spices has to equal the lay direction of the outer conductor layer. Mounting instructions: 1) Straighten the conductor ends to be jointed, secure the conductor wires in their proper position and cut the conductor ends so that they have a level surface. 2) Clean the conductor ends over at least the contact length of the line splice. For this purpose we recommend using a steel wire brush, e.g. according to sheet B198/1. 3) Mounting the line splice 3.1) with a rod diameter of 6,35 mm Place the first set of rods with the colour mark at one conductor end and wrap it on. Position the end of the second conductor at the centre mark of the rod set and wrap it on as well. Wrap on the remaining sets as well, in the same way, starting near the conductor ends. 3.2) with a rod diameter of 7,87 mm Apply a thin but closed layer of the friction paste on the conductor surface along the contact length of the line splice. The friction paste can be applied by hand or with a paint brush. Place the first rod with the colour mark at one conductor end and wrap it on. Position the end of the second conductor at the centre mark of the rod and wrap it on as well. Wrap on the second rod, in the same way, starting near the conductor ends. The second rod must be placed close to the first one. Proceed with the remaining rods in the same way. 4) Clean the line splice after all rods have been mounted. For this purpose we recommend a steel wire brush, e.g. according to sheet B198/1. Dismantling: Reuse after removal is not allowed. Stand: 16. Mounting instruction: 1) Straighten the ends of the conductor, tie them together and cut them off straight-line. 2) Clean the conductor at both ends at liberally half the length of the line splice. For this purpose we recommend using a wire scratch brush, e.g. according to sheet B198/1. 3) Place the first set of rods with the colour mark at the end of one conductor and coil it up. Place the end of the second conductor on the centre mark of the rod set and coil it up as well. Coil up the remaining sets as well, in the same way, starting near the joint of the conductor s ends. 4) Clean the line splice. For this purpose we recommend using a wire scratch brush, e.g. according to sheet B198/1. Dismantling: Removal and subsequent reuse of the line splice are not allowed. Stand: 08.
