Special Products NEG MICON Yaw Brake Refitting Kit NEG MICON turbines: NM 60 NM 72 NM 80 Advantages at a glance: 8 10 % higher productivity Simple on site assembly Quick return on investment The EMB Yaw Brake Refitting Kit will eliminate effectively all brake related current technical problems on NEG MICON turbines such as: oil leakages and failure of the entire yaw brake system oil contaminated brake pads, damaged seals slipping of the brake disc and damaged yaw brake drives broken brake calipers and fixing bolts noise emissions gear box damages By using our EMB refitting kit for NEG MICON Windmills (NM 60, NM 72, NM 80) your wind turbine will experience new productivity levels. Our tests have shown an overall increase in productivity in the range of 8 10%. Cost and time intensive maintenance and repairs of hydraulic and brake components will be obsolete. Also frequently required oil refills due to leakages and cleaning measurements of the inner tower are no longer required. The EMB yaw brakes need to be greased just once per year, otherwise there is no maintenance required for the lifetime of min. 20 years. We have also introduced an advanced brake pad change system allowing our customers to change the brake pads in minutes, which takes hours on hydraulic brake systems. Fast installation For the assembly of our yaw brake system, the existing mounting holes on the NEG MICON turbines can be used. There are also no changes on the control system/software required. The entire installation and commissioning of the refitting system will be done by our experienced service partners within 2 days. 10
Advantages of EMB in Offshore Applications Selflocking system Brake force remains applied without energy for an unlimited time in case of power shut offs or emergency stops. The turbine is safe even in case of days and weeks of long lasting bad weather conditions, allowing no access to the site. Maintenance Rotor Brakes/Rotor Locks: no maintenance is required for lifetime Yaw Brakes: just greasing is required once per year Safety Compared to hydraulic systems, each EMB caliper is directly electrical driven. The system is offering maximum safety in case of failure of single components, as all other brake calipers remain operational and can contribute to prevent damages on the yaw drives. The actual brake force is measured directly at the caliper and does not calculate the applied brake force by the pressure level in the hydraulic system, allowing the highest possible safety level, as no clogged hydraulics can influence the actually applied brake force. History of electromechanical brakes in wind turbines 2001 Initial design of the first electromechanical brake (EMB) for wind turbines with a brake force of 100 kn. 2003 Start of serial assembly of the first EMB with a brake force of 100 kn. 2004 Introduction of an active EMB with a brake force of 300 kn and 40 kn. 2005 First passive fail-safe EMB with 80 kn (7.5 kn) brake force. 2007 Introduction of an active EMB with 110 kn brake force, rpm controlled braking and capacitor backup. 2008 First installation of an electromechanical yaw brake with 500 kn braking force as replacement of hydraulic yaw brakes on NEG MICON machines. 2009 Today electromechanical brakes are in the specification of more than 20 new wind turbine designs ranging from 600 KW to 5 MW. More than 10 OEM are using the EMB concept in serial production, among them the European market and technology leaders. 11
