Extreme Spill Technology
New Requirements Excellent oil spill recovery equipment already exists for calm waters and light ice conditions. Many companies worldwide sell this equipment which was developed decades ago. Extreme Spill Technology has developed a new system to remove oil from the sea in much higher waves and very heavy, flowing pack ice typical of the Arctic.
A Completely New Approach An international patent has been granted. Based on the gravity separation of oil, our system has no moving parts other than pumps. Tested at Ohmsett with high Throughput Efficiency (up to 94.4% in calm, 90.2% in waves). http://www.spilltechnology.com/video/index. html
Sustainable Shipping Award _ 2011
Introduction to China In 2008, Dr James Zhang of China Offshore Environmental Services, the oil spill arm of CNOOC, examined Extreme Spill Technology s innovative system. Our technology was not fully developed but interest was positive. CNOOC has recently shown strong interest.
Ohmsett Testing _ 2012.09.16
12m Ohmsett Test Skimmer Vessel In September, 2012, EST tested a 12m skimmer vessel at the Ohmsett test facility in the USA. Afterwards, this vessel was delivered to the Canadian Coast Guard in October, 2012. They will now test it on the ocean in winter ice. This vessel measured 12m LOA and only 3m BOA for easy trucking to Ohmsett. Future 12m vessels can measure 6m BOA and recover oil twice as fast.

Testing in China _ 2012.08.26
China Sea Trials In August, 2012, the Chinese coast guard, the Maritime Safety Administration, arranged for a demonstration of our 6m skimmer vessel in Weihai harbour in Shandong province. The oil used was bunker C diluted with a small amount of diesel so it would pour. MSA was impressed when the skimmer recovered not only the thick oil but also all the sheen.
The Tower Got it All The photos of the 6m test boat in China were taken after the test. The vessel bottom was not cleaned or altered after leaving the ocean. The clean aft section of the bottom shows that no oil got past the tower. The China test boat was smaller then the Ohmsett test boat but worked the same way.

EST Vessels Are Multipurpose
A Plug Can Fill The Tower Moon Pool and Provide a Large, Open Workdeck
EST Technology is Easy to Use
Just Drop in the Oil Recovery Tower
Place in the Water
Add the Diesel-Hydraulic Power Unit
Attach the Quick-Connect Hoses
Plug in the Microprocessor
Turn on the Microprocessor
Collect Spilled Oil
Cleanup is Simple Disconnect the quick-connect hoses and microprocessor cables. Flush the hoses and pumps with clean water. Pressure wash the interior of the oil recovery tower and the exterior bottom of the vessel. At no time does oily equipment come onboard the vessel. No dis-assembly is required
Benefits of EST Oil Skimmer Vessels The EST oil spill technology is a modular system that plugs in within minutes when required. Our vessels can transform from a general workboat to an oil skimmer quickly enough for an immediate oil spill response. Our vessels are modern designs built with modern materials for lower cost, longer life, lower maintenance and more speed.
Fast, Multifunctional Workboats Oil Spills, Debris Recovery etc
.Fast and Seaworthy.
..Can Be Installed in Huge Barges.
EST Vessels Can Also Utilize Spill Green This remarkable product was developed by Exxon and can be used anywhere, including the Arctic. It can be used as an optional tool to increase the effectiveness of EST technology in very shallow water, on and around beaches, and fragile wetlands. Spray-on granular solidifier that floats indefinitely and can form a floating barrier which acts like a boom. Upon contact, any oil turns into a non-toxic, nonleaching, floating material that can be recovered with the EST system or just left to turn to dust.

Problems That EST Technology Solves Problem #1) Currently, the world suffers an inability to clean up oil spills on the open ocean. Average success rates are extremely low (5%). EST technology, with no moving parts, can increase the success rate on the high seas. Problem #2) Equipment currently proposed for the Arctic doesn t have a chance in heavy or dynamic, moving ice. The EST system, however, is as rugged as a bulldozer blade and will not be damaged by extreme ice conditions.
Problem #1: Oil Spills On The Ocean
The Macondo Spill _ 2010 BP s Massive Effort: 48,000 workers 6,000 vessels 120 aircraft $10-14 billion USD
In 2010, BP Recovered 3% of the Oil.
BP Burned 5% of the Oil
...Dispersants Have Led to Lawsuits.
.and Left the Oil in the Sea.
There Must Be a Better Way..
Rule One: Avoid Complexity at Sea
Rule Two: Avoid the Need for Labour
Rule Three: Avoid Exposure to Toxic Oil
Rule Four: Respond Immediately, Not 72 Hours Later
EST Meets These Requirements The only moving part is a standard oil pump. No handling of oily gear. One person can operate a small vessel (12m) with the EST system. Setting up takes only minutes. With no physical labour required by staff/personnel, the crew can comfortably wear bulky, protective clothing and respirators whilst recovering the oil.
Problem #2: Oil Spills in Arctic Ice
So-Called Arctic Technology Can Only Function In Light, Stationary Ice
Floating Booms Rip Apart in Ice
The Largest, Existing Equipment is Dwarfed Even By Southern Ice
In-Situ Burning Damages Arctic Albedo
EST 70m Built for the Arctic
Polar Ice Class 5, Multipurpose, EST- Technology Skimmer Ship
Fully Engineered for the Arctic
Effective and Economical Works in bad weather and remote sites. The crew operate the oil spill system from inside the vessel where it is warm and safe. The EST oil recovery system can be controlled from the bridge via wireless communication with the towers. Performs a variety of daily tasks including SAR, scientific research, on-site command centre, etc. Is large and strong enough to handle heavy pack ice broken up by an icebreaker. No fragile parts and no moving parts.
Environmentally Friendly Fuel efficient, with an immense range at all times of the year. Removes the oil from the environment and doesn t just hide it. Does not pollute by creating black carbon and burn residues, or by introducing toxic, chemical dispersants.
Also Ideal for Bohai Wan, the Location of China s Offshore Oil Fields
