INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 1/8 1 INSTALLATION SLM - Sealing Liquid Monitor INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 1.1 Mounting The SLM has a mounting plate for simple installation. The SML can be mounted using a bolt already fastened at the selected mounting location or by attaching the mounting plate onto another surface. Mounting using an available bolt: 1 Loosen a bolt at the selected mounting location (for example, a pump flange). 2 Push the notch of the mounting plate against the bolt. 3 Re-tighten the bolt. Mounting by attaching the mounting plate onto another surface: 1 Drill two 8mm (5/16 ) holes on the chosen surface. Place the holes 44 mm (1 3/4 ) apart. 2 Install the SLM using the holes and M6 (UNC 1/4) bolts. If an optional installation stand is delivered with the SLM, mount it near the pump using, for example, 12mm (1/2 ) anchor bolts. Then attach the SLM to the installation stand using the M12x25 bolt and washers that are delivered with the installation stand. If you want to mount several SLM units onto an installation stand, you must use a mounting plate that is designed for two or three SLM units. Attach one of the SLMs using a M12 bolt and washers. Attach the other SLMs using the two M6 bolts that are delivered with the mounting plate.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 3/8 1.2 Hose connections Hose connections are made using hose that has a 10mm (3/8 ) inside diameter. The hose must be textile reinforced. It must withstand at least 16 bar (240 psi) pressure. Attach the hoses using pipe clamps over the hose barb fittings. Leave the hose long enough to prevent kinks and to avoid sharp turns. Hoses may be bundled with, for example, tie straps. Connection instructions are located on the bottom of the mounting plate: 1. IN water feed inlet 2. TO SEAL water feed to seal 3. FROM SEAL water return from seal to pressurizing valve 4. OUT water outlet to effluent channel or re-circulation NOTE! If the pressurizing valve has a pressure switch, hoses 3 and 4 are reversed as follows: 3. FROM SEAL water outlet to effluent channel or re-circulation 4. OUT water return from seal to pressurizing valve 1.3 Alarm installation and adjustment Install the alarm sensor behind the indicating tube that is located in the back of the SLM as follows: 1 The sensor has two lock nuts. Move one of the nuts to the flat end of the sensor. 2 Move the other nut to approximately 10 mm (1/2 ) distance from the first nut. 3 Insert the sensor into the sensor slot located at the back of the SLM by pivoting it into place at the top opening of the sensor slot (widened). When the sensor is in place, it moves freely up and down in the sensor slot. 4 Tighten the sensor clockwise against the bottom of the sensor slot. This thightens the sensor into position. Adjust the low flow alarm by adjusting the position of the sensor in the sensor slot. When the plastic flow indicator ring falls slightly below the midpoint of the sensor, the alarm is activated.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 4/8 Do as follows to set the low flow alarm more accurately: 1 Adjust the water flow to the alarm value. 2 Move the sensor up until the alarm goes off. NOTE! The way of determination depends on the type of the sensor. The alarm state is determined either according to the sensor state LED indicator or by connecting the sensor to an alarm system. 3 Tighten the sensor into position. Adjust the high flow alarm by adjusting the position of the sensor in the sensor slot. When the plastic flow indicator ring rises to nearly the midpoint of the high flow sensor, the alarm is activated. Set the high flow alarm more accurately in a way similar to the more accurate setting of the low flow alarm. The SLM can have both low flow and high flow alarm. In such case, it has two sensors. Sensor mounting Lock nut Sensor Adjustment 1.4 Flow adjustment Adjust the flow in a SLM that does not have a pressurizing valve by adjusting the valve of the SLM until the desired flow rate is reached. Use the quick cleaner to push the float from the set value. Check that the float returns to the set value when the quick cleaner is retracted. NOTE! If you want to prevent the tampering of the SLM and/or make the SLM adjustable using a hand tool, remove the hand knob. Remove the back of the hand knob. Unscrew the knob lock screw. When the knob is removed, screw the delivered M8 lock nut onto the valve. Valve locking Lock nut
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 5/8 When you use a SLM unit that has a pressurizing valve, you must adjust both the flow rate and pressure as follows: 1 First fully open both valves. 2 Adjust the valve of the flowmeter until the required flow rate is set. 3 Adjust the pressurizing valve that is located behind the flowmeter until the required pressure is set. NOTE! The adjusting of the pressurizing valve changes the flow rate. Therefore, repeat the steps until both the desired flow rate and the pressure value are reached. 2 OPERATION Read the flow from the scale. The pointer is the middle point of the black band on the float. 2.1 Quick cleaning Over time the indicating tube may discolor due to algae, silt, fibre, and other contamination. This may make it difficult to read the flow rate. The SLM has a built-in quick cleaner. Quick cleaner operates as follows: 1 When you are cleaning, hold firmly the SLM using your other hand. 2 Thread the cleaning plunger rod into the top of the SLM. 3 Push slowly downwards the cleaning plunger to avoid pressure variations to the seal. Note that if the SLM has a flow alarm, the alarm must have a minimum of 5 second delay. Otherwise, the downward movement of the float during cleaning can cause a false alarm. 4 Let pressure push the plunger slowly upwards. Hinder slightly the rising by using your hand. Cleaner
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 6/8 3 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE 3.1 Metering components and valve If the quick cleaning does not resolve problems in flow measuring, foreign objects or long term contaminant build-up in the metering components probably cause the problem. In such cases, the metering components must be disassembled. Metering component disassembly: 1 Close the water feed to the SLM. Use the possible valve located before the SLM unit (not the SLM valve). 2 Close the SLM valve. 3 If the cap of the upper plug is still in place, remove it. 4 Screw on the quick cleaning rod. Push it halfway into the metering tube. 5 Open the upper plug using a 14 mm metric wrench. 6 Pull out the quick cleaner and, simultaneously, push the metering tube out of the meter body using your thumb. 7 Gently lift out the float using, for example, a toothpick. 8 Clean the feed inlet using, for example, a cloth wrapped around a toothpick. 9 Separate parts should be soaked in soap or mild solvent based solution. Brush them clean using a cloth. 10 Reassemble the metering components in the reverse order. Usually, foreign material in the valve causes the valve problems. When you open the valve and then set the flow back to normal, the foreign material is removed. However, if this does not resolve the problem, you must disassemble the valve to determine the cause of the problem. Valve disassembly: 1 Close the water feed to the SLM. Use the valve located before the SLM unit (not the SLM valve). 2 Because the seal must be unpressurized, shut down the pump. 3 Unscrew the valve assembly using a 22 mm metric wrench.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 7/8 4 Clean the meter inlet and valve area using, for example, a cloth wrapped around a toothpick. 5 If the valve needle O-ring leaks, remove the adjustment knob and screw the needle clockwise through the valve body. 6 Reassemble the valve in the reverse order. 3.2 Seals Remove the broken or worn out O-rings carefully to avoid damage to the sealing surfaces. Best results are obtained by using only fingers or toothpicks. Never use metallic tools. When you install new O-rings, remember the following: 1 Do not damage the O-ring when you move it over the threads. A short smooth pipe can be placed over the threads to protect the O-ring. 2 Do not leave the O-ring on a spiral. 3 Before installation, lightly lubricate new O-rings using silicone lubricant. 4 Use only FPM (Viton) O-rings. 3.3 External cleaning The metering unit may be cleaned using detergent liquid and water spray, or by brushing using a sponge or brush. Avoid strong solvents and excessive brushing. During cleaning, the quick cleaner hole must be covered or plugged, for example, using the quick cleaner. This is to prevent dirt build-up on the top of the cleaning piston. If the SLM has electrical alarms, excessive use of cleaning water must be avoided. 3.4 General operation and maintenance The SLM does not require regular maintenance. The SLM will remain operational for extended periods when occasionally the metering tube is cleaned using the quick cleaner. Only factory authorized spare parts should be used in the SLM. Components that could be replaced with third party components (for example, connectors) are critical components of the SLM measurement and connection assembly. Do not leave water in the metering tube during shut-down in cold conditions. Freezing of the water left in the metering tube will break the glass tube. The freezing is avoided by pushing down the quick cleaner.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 8/8 Do not over-tighten the SLM components. Proper seals on the instrument do not require large tightening torque. If a leak develops, replace the O-ring seal (when necessary) rather than tightening the connections more. Tightening torque is 7-10 Nm.
