This bumper mounted swing away system works in conjunction with our plate steel bumpers (GVW-BUMPERS). Note: This swing away is ONLY designed to work with the GoWesty-designed plate steel bumpers (the early design with integrated hitch, or our latest design with the bolt-in hitch option). They WILL NOT work with other bumpers or our early design, NON-HITCH bumpers. Those bumpers are not stiff enough to handle the load of the carrier. If your GoWesty plate steel bumper uses the stock bumper mounts (bolted to the mounts through the face of the bumper), DO NOT install this carrier! Installation of this kit is not within everyone's ability. While it is not overly complex, it does involve careful measuring and drilling. Read through these instructions thoroughly and decide if installing it is for you. If not, please take this product to your local automotive professional. IMORTANT INSTALLATION INSTALLATION NOTE: USE ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND ON ALL STAINLESSTO-STAINLESS FASTENER JUNCTIONS! When installing stainless fasteners together, they have a tendency to bind up. When this happens there is usually no recourse except to cut them off and start over with fresh fasteners. Using Anti-Seize Compound prevents this from happening, so don t skimp on the anti-seize and don t forget it! Mounting the Swing Arm Step 1 Install Hinge Plate Mount hinge plate on bumper at the far edge of the face. Mark the holes for drilling. Remove hinge plate and drill the holes using 13/32 bit. Mount the hinge plate using the 10mm x 35mm bolts and nylock nuts with the 20mm washers under the bolt head and the nut. You will need to unbolt and slide the bumper out a bit to gain enough access. Step 2 Mount the Swing Arm Mount the arm to the hinge using the long stainless spacer sleeve, bolt, and 30mm washers. You will notice the hinge end of the arm has a small protrusion on one side; this side should face out with arm in closed position. The protrusion acts as the limiting stop at the end of the arm s travel. The poly washers go between the arm and the hinge plate. Tighten the 10mm nut and bolt until snug. RAISED EDGE FACING OUT
Step 3 Mount the Upright and Latch Plate Attach the latch mounting bracket and the upright to the arm using the 8mm x 70mm bolts and 8mm x 20mm bolt and large washers. Fine tune the vertical positioning of the upright by putting a load on the arm lean on it as you swing it closed, and the tab of the upright should just clear the top of the bumper. The latch plate should be installed so that the top just clears the top of the bumper. The extra plastic screw and acorn nut should be used on the forward hole of the bottom tab of the latch plate as an upward stop. The screw will need to be trimmed slightly to fit into the nut and tightened down securely. Step 4 Mounting the Latch Mount the latch to the latch bracket using the countersunk 5mm bolts and nylock nuts. Adjust the length of the hook to provide a secure latch down over the rear edge of the bumper.
Step 5 Mounting the Strut Open the swing arm fully and install one of the ball studs in the top of the arm with small OD stainless washer. Attach the piston end of the strut (skinny end) to this ball and mark the location on the bumper where the other ball end will need to be installed. With the arm fully open, the strut should be at full extension. Drill a 5/16 hole in the bumper, approximately 5/8 in from the face of the bumper in the corresponding location. Mount the ball stud to the bumper using one 8mm nylock and the two other small OD washers (one on either side of the bumper). You will need to unbolt and slide the bumper out to gain access. WARNING: In order for the struts to hold a fully loaded carrier in the open position, they are quite strong. Please use caution when opening them prior to loading. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are installing this swing away carrier on an early version of a GoWesty bumper, you may encounter two issues: The earlier bumper designs sit closer to the body all around. This may make it impossible to slide the hook part of the latch over the inner edge of the bumper. If this is the case, you may need to trim some of the tip of the hook away so it has a lower profile and can slip easily between the body and the bumper. The earlier bumper designs also have a closed chamber in the area where the ball is to be mounted for the strut. There are two solutions for this: 1) Drill a ¾-1 hole on the bottom surface of the bumper so you can get a socket inside with an extension to hold the nut, or 2) Drill a slightly larger hole on the top surface and install a threaded insert. Mounting the Accessories Tray Attach the tray to the upright using the four 8mm, black, stainless carriage bolts and four 8mm nylock nuts and washers with a dab of the anti-seize. Now wasn t that easy? Spare Tire Carrier Step 1 Attaching the Tower Attach the spare tire tower using 8mm nylock nuts and washers. Step 2 Tire Mounting Assembly Use the U-bolts to position the backing plate vertically on the tower so the bottom edge of the tire rests on the tower mounting plate. Use the carriage bolts to position the stud plate horizontally on the backing plate so the back edge of the tire rests on the tower upright. Secure wheel with the lug nuts.
