DEFINITIONS BIODEGRADABLE: are a specific type of product that breaks down after its intended purpose to result in natural with products such as gases (CO2, N2), Water and Biomass and inorganic salts. This effect could last hundred of years COMPOSTABLE: in controlled environmental, in terms of humidity, temperature and bacterial activity the product must decompose more than 90% in water, CO2 and Biomass in no more than 180 days OK COMPOST: certificate emitted by Vinçotte, it is submitted to EN13432 compliance. It is related to industrial composter in which temperature, humidity and bacterial activity are under control. OK COMPOST HOME: certificate emitted by Vinçotte, it is submitted to EN13432 compliance. It is related to household composters (usually in the garden with temperature and bacterial activity depending on season and environmental conditions) 6
EN 13432 ASTM 6400 Requirements and Certifications 7
EN 13432 ASTM 6400 In order to be defined "biodegradable" and "compostable", products have to be certified by a Board of Certification as Vinçotte. The 95% out of the total mass of certified materials has to be manufactured using compostable raw materials; producers can choose a maximum of 5 non-compostable materials, with a 1% maximum concentration each. The raw materials used are /can be certified, and have to be compliant with 4 essential law requirements: quantity of heavy metals biodegradability disintegration ecotoxicity 8
The table on the right specifies the maximum concentration that some elements can reach in compostable packages composition, in compliance with the 94/62 EC directive and its subsequent modifications: EN 13432 ASTM 6400 Quantity of heavy metals Element mg/kg of dry substance Zn (Zinc) 150 Cu (Copper) 50 Ni (Nickel) 25 Cd (Cadmium) 0,5 Pb (Lead) 50 Hg (Mercury) 0,5 Cr (Chromium) 50 Mo (Molybdenum) 1 Se (Selenium) 0,75 As (Arsenic) 5 F (Fluorine) 100 9
EN 13432 ASTM 6400 Biodegradability, disintegration and ecotoxicity BIODEGRADABILITY A biodegradation level of at least 90% must be reached during the lapse of time indicated by testing procedures (180 days at least). DISINTEGRATION The compost is screened with a 2mm sieve: AEROBIC COMPOST - after a maximum of 12 weeks the residual mass of test material shall be less than 10% of the original dry mass; ANAEROBIC COMPOST - after a maximum of 5 weeks (anaerobic digestion + aerobic stabilization) the residual mass of test material shall be less than 10% of the original dry mass. ECOTOXICITY The test calculates germination speed and vegetal biomass both in the reference compost and in the one containing decomposed test material. The parameters of this second compost must reach at least the 90% of the parameters measured in the first. 10
2-LAYER LAMINATES In order to be certified, DUPLEX materials must be manufactured using raw materials that are/can be certified. The thickness of raw materials must be half of the total certified thickness. In case of a lamination performed using an adhesive, disintegration tests are always compulsory (even if the chosen adhesive is a compostable one) A component max thickness 200µm B component max thickness 1.5mm Film max thickness: 100µm + 750µm= 850µm 11
