Investing in Innovation S&C Electric Company s Advanced Technology Center The Power Affiliates Program 32 nd Annual Review May 20, 2011 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chris Lettow Manager Product Engineering
Who Is S&C Electric Company? Specialists in electric power switching and protection Headquartered in Chicago, USA Operations in five countries Employee-Owned Annual sales ~ $500+ million USD 2500 employees globally
What is the ATC? A high-power testing laboratory Located in S&C s Chicago, IL industrial campus 2 850MVA generators 1700MVA total Up to 100 ka and up to 230 kv 43,000 Sq Ft facility Environmentally Friendly City of Chicago Green Building Policy LEED Gold Certification Affiliation with NEETRAC
Why Build the ATC? Many reasons but shortening product development time is key Prior to ATC construction, S&C s previous High Power Lab test capability was only 100MVA Required testing at outside laboratories in Vancouver and Holland In addition to the cost of testing, this left development teams little flexibility and required long lag times between test, analyze data, re-design and re-test
Why Build the ATC? Previous High Power Lab provided ability for proof of concept testing only could usually not test any product to full rating Example: 27kV, 12.5kA interrupter could test only as high as 8kV, 7.5kA Lead times at outside laboratories usually very long and often uncertain difficult to factor in to development project schedule
NEETRAC - National Electric Energy Testing Research & Applications Center Affiliated with Georgia Tech College of Engineering Comprised of utilities, manufacturers and educators S&C joined in 2009 NEETRAC shared in funding of the ATC and will use the ATC for its testing programs

ATC Benefits Already Realized ATC opened in January, 2010 Innovation has always been crucial to S&C s success and the ATC has already paid dividends! Within first month of operation, increased testing capabilities of ATC allowed us to perform testing required to expand interrupting rating of an existingo product Several ongoing development projects have been aided by the ability to test, react and re-test quickly without the need for expensive travel and test preparations Engineers more engaged in the testing process - as home lab better understanding of components, lab capabilities and circuit setups
ATC Benefits Soon to be Realized Relationship with NEETRAC offers many benefits, chief among them the ability to obtain 3 rd Party Test Certifications in our own laboratory 3 rd Party, independent certifications to industry standards (IEEE, IEC) becoming required by more and more utilities particularly internationally NEETRAC s involvement allows outside customers to make use of the ATC for their own use with confidentiality ensured Separate control room for NEETRAC/outside customers off limits to S&C personnel
