INTSTALLATION INSTALLATION INSTALLATION 11
INTSTALLATION INSTALLATION Receiving & Unpacking Inspect the packaging for shipping damage. If any shipping damage has occurred, notify the shipping company immediately. Unpacking Instructions: The Roller Spreader is shipped ready for operation. Remove the spreader from the packaging and place it on a table near your work area, convenient to a grounded three pole 115 Volt AC outlet. 12
INTSTALLATION INSTALLATION Layout & Power Requirements The Roller Spreader requires the power cord be plugged into a properly grounded three pole 115 Volt AC outlet. It draws less than 1 amp. The Roller Spreader is 24" long, 8" wide and 6 1/2" high. 6 1/2" 8" 24" 13
INTSTALLATION INSTALLATION Roller Spreader Installation: 1. Your machine is supplied with a trial size bottle of Bates Boothcoating. Apply this product directly to surfaces where glue may drip. This will enable the glue to be easily cleaned. 2. Position the glue pan on the base plate between the screws provided. 3. Slide the doctor roll into the slot provided. It runs against four bearings. 4. Snap the felt covered glue roll in place after aligning the notch in the end of the glue roll shaft with the pin in the end of the motor shaft. This also runs against four bearings. 5. Plug the power cord into a properly grounded three pole 115 volt AC outlet. It draws less than 1 amp. 14
OPERATION OPERATION OPERATION 15
OPERATION Safety & Training OPERATION According to many OSHA, ANSI, STATE, and LOCAL CODES it is the EMPLOYER'S RESPONSIBILITY to: Permit only trained and authorized employees to operate equipment. Inspect and maintain guards, safety devices, and start/stop controls. Instruct, train, and supervise the safe method of work Be sure personnel are properly trained and safety rules are clearly understood before operating or performing maintenance! 16
OPERATION OPERATION Roller Spreader Operation 1. Turn the unit on and fill the glue pan. Bring the adhesive level up until it contacts the bottom of the roll and then fill it another 1/4" higher. Add adhesive later if the roll runs dry. 2. Check the glue spread on the wood with the mil gage provided. A 6-8 mil spread is usually desirable but this can be adjusted heavier if you prefer. Adjust the adhesive spread by turning the thumb screws in or out accordingly. The adjustment can be locked by tightening the elastic stop nuts while holding the thumb screws in the proper position. 3. Move the wood across the roller by hand in the same direction the roller is turning and at approximately the same speed at which the glue roller outer surface is moving. 4. As light a pressure as possible should be applied to the wood to prevent the glue from squeezing up onto the surfaces which are not being glued. 17
OPERATION OPERATION 5. Keep the roller spreader running whenever there is glue in the pan. If the motor is turned off for too long, or the glue pan runs dry the rollers may glue themselves to one another causing the motor to stall and the fuse to blow. 6. When you are finished using the roller spreader place the glue roller and doctor roller in a 5 gallon or larger container filled near to the top with water and keep below the surface of the water until they are needed again. 7. Keep the cover securely snapped down on the glue pan when not in use to prevent the glue from skimming over. 18
TROUBLESHOOTING TROUBLESHOOTING TROUBLESHOOTING 19
TROUBLESHOOTING TROUBLESHOOTING Operational Troubleshooting 1.The machine will not turn on The motor is protected by a 1 amp fuse inside the electrical box. Remove the cover and access the fuse holder to replace the fuse if necessary. Spare fuses are shipped inside the electrical box 2. The glue hardens to the rollers Submerge the roller in water to soften up the hardened glue until they can be separated and then resume operation of the roller spreader. 3. The glue becomes too thick Add water to the PVA glue to make up for the water that is lost from the glue due to evaporation. 20
