Course Syllabus Course Overview This course is designed to meet the classroom requirement of your driver s education experience. It is approved by the State of Indiana. Time Requirements The State of Indiana requires that you spend at least 30 hours completing the course. You are free to take more time than that if you need, but 30 hours is the minimum required course time. line This online course is self paced. You will be able to work through as much or as little of the content as you want per day. Note: there is a state restriction that says you can only complete 3 hours of content per day. Grading Policy The State of Indiana requires you to have at least an 80% to pass driver s education. The online classroom achieves this by requiring that you have an 80% on every assignment in order to pass the course. If you have any concerns as a parent or guardian about your student s ability to complete the content in a responsible manner, then you are welcome supervise any and all of their work on the course.
Unit Order and Objectives The course is made up of 10 Units. Each Unit has a series of assignments. All assignments that have a required reading or video have an amount of time that users are required to spend in the assignment. s also have an inactivity timer that will stop the timer if a user is inactive for a given period of time. Note: This timer should affect the viewing of videos. So if an assignment has a 15 minute video then the user should be ok with being inactive for the duration of the video. Glossary of Terms A Acceleration lane: Lane that allows drivers enough time to gain speed to merge onto interstate highways Aggressive Driving: Driving in a way that exhibits aggression towards other drivers. Alignment: All of the things that go into making sure that your car drives straight Anti-Lock Braking System: An advanced braking system that attempts to prevent your tires from skidding in reactionary situations B Blind Spot: An area around a vehicle that is difficult to see with or without the assistance of mirrors. Blood-Alcohol Concentration (BAC): Amount of alcohol present in your blood Braking distance: Distance needed to come to a complete stop C Collision: A situation that results in contact between two vehicles, sometimes referred to as an accident Controlled Intersection: An intersection where the flow of traffic is controlled by signal arrows Cross buck: X shaped sign that signifies the presence of a railroad crossing. D Deceleration Lane: Area that allows vehicles a safe distance to slow down when coming off of an interstate highway Defensive Driving: Driving in a manner that protects you from the actions of other drivers. Driver Responsibility: A driver s moral and legal responsibilities Driving as a Privilege: Driving on public roads isn t a given right, but it is a privilege. This causes drivers to lose some freedoms in the name of the safety of others. F Fatigue: A symptom that is caused by physical and mental exhaustion Field of Vision: The area visible to a driver Following Distance: The time it takes a driver to reach the place in the road that was previously occupied by the driver in front of them. G Glare: A reflected brightness that affects a driver s ability to see H Highway Transportation System (HTS): The system that allows people to travel. It includes all of the people, vehicles, and roadways. I Implied Consent: The notion that choosing to participate in the privilege of driving implies that you are willing to consent to things that would normally impede upon your rights. This includes but is not limited to a field sobriety test or a blood alcohol test. IPDE Process: The system of thinking that describes how a responsible driver thinks and behaves in driving situations. (Identify, Predicting, Deciding, and Executing). M Minimum Speed Limit: The minimum speed that you are allowed to travel on a roadway.
MPG: The miles per gallon that a vehicle can attain O Overdriving headlights: Driving at a speed that is too fast for your headlights to show all obstacles in front of you Oversteer: When a driver turns too much to avoid an obstacle P Parallel parking: Parking in a situation where you are between two vehicles and parallel to the curb R Reaction Time: The time that is needed for an individual to react to a situation Reckless Driving: Driving in a manner that ignores the safety of yourself or others Right-of-way: The privilege of having the use of the roadway directly in front of you S Slow Moving Vehicle: A vehicle that is unable to travel at normal roadway speeds. T Tailgate: To follow another vehicle very closely Total stopping distance The distance required for your vehicle to stop including your reaction time and stopping distance U Uncontrolled Intersection: An intersection that isn t controlled by signs or signals Y Yield: To give another vehicle or person the right-of-way
