Railway application fields The use of power distribution equipment in the railway sector falls into three categories. 39049_tgv Category Embedded equipment (Rolling stock) Embedded devices must satisfy the performance levels and requirements related to the particular context and to the constraints of installing and operating them in rolling stock. The present document applies to this category of use. Embedded equipment requirements Apart from meeting the usual performance levels required for implementing and operating electrical equipment, equipment installed on board rolling stock must conform to requirements specific to the railway sector. Fire risk One of the main hazards for railway equipment authorities and operators is the risk of fire with the serious consequences it may have on personal safety, the environment or equipment integrity. The National or SupraNational authorities have therefore established specific regulations and standards to forestall and limit the consequences of a fire. The choice of products classed as embedded devices and the conditions under which they are implemented are determined by and dependent on compliance with the requirements specified in these standards. DB406155 DB406154 REACH Environment Shocks and vibrations Due to rolling stock-specific constraints, a higher level of shock, vibration and bump resistance is required. The reference baseline is defined by the test conditions specified by IEC 61373. Temperatures Climatic ambient temperatures are derived from IEC 60721-3-5 Class 5K2, which specifies the temperature range as -25 C to +40 C. Depending on the area in which the rolling stock operates, the storage or operating negative or positive temperature limit resistance level can be more demanding. An operating temperature of -50 C may typically be required for trains operating in Siberia. RoHS, REACH Environmental requirements are becoming increasingly stringent and traceability of all materials (by component and respective mass) is required for railway vehicles travelling within Europe. Consolidation is achieved by railway vehicle manufacturers on the basis of the declaration made by each subassembly manufacturer. Normative reference for the selection of materials DB406157 DB406156 DB406314 Europe in 2013 EN 45545-2 Until now, only national standards that could be used as references beyond their native borders were valid for specifying the necessary level of requirements in the selection of materials to be used in railway rolling stock. Now, a European standard (EN 45545-2) currently being finalised, is to be published mid-2013. Although this new European standard will become mandatory for all trains running on European soil (by 2016), it will not fully replace the national standards currently in use with immediate effect. Some operators or countries, including France, are declaring that they also want to maintain a requirement of conformity with current national standards deemed to be complementary for certain performance levels. Fundamentals of NF F 16-101 and NF F 16-102 standards French Standards Compliance with NF standards for rolling stock is mandatory for all trains running on French territory. These two standards are also used as reference documents in many other countries. NF F 16-101 Railway rolling stock. Fire behaviour. Choice of materials. NF F 16-102 Railway rolling stock. Fire behaviour. Application to electrical devices. It specifies a system of classification requiring an application-based materials performance level with regard to criteria for fire reaction and smoke production in the event of fire. The results of these tests will determine the levels of, fire reaction classification "I" and smoke classification " F ". NF F 16-101 and NF F 16-102 specify the requirement level for electrical switchgear, depending on: The category of the rolling stock in which it is installed. Its physical location in the rolling stock. The combustible mass of such switchgear. Rolling stock is classified into three categories Rolling stock classification is based on two main criteria that characterise the severity level. Categories Tunnel operation Type of rolling stock A1 Frequent All rolling stock including driving cabs A2 Infrequent Urban and suburban rolling stock Railcars and their trailers Main line rolling stock with sleeping accommodation, including driving cabs B Infrequent Main line rolling stock with seats, including driving cabs Locomotive and shunter driving cabs Switchgear location The separate locations covered by the various regulations are: Parts carrying people, passengers or operators (driving cab, service area, etc.). Service areas, separated from driving cabs by a partition or separated from passenger areas by a flame trap and fire barrier. The outside of vehicles. Combustible mass The combustible mass determines, by the quantity of the materials, the degree of risk it represents. The mass of combustible parts is considered as factors determining the fire behaviour requirement for a given category of equipment. The fire behaviour requirements of a component are defined by requirements tables selected according to equipment category, location of the switchgear and the combustible mass "m", according to the "main requirements summary" table. Devices generally used juxtaposed in a restricted space are not considered individually but together with the other devices around them in one, two or three directions. These devices are considered to be juxtaposed if the distance between them is maximum 10 mm measured horizontally, or maximum 20 mm measured vertically. 10 Version : 1.0 21/05/2013 CM909001E

European Standard The new standard, EN 45545-2 is based on existing regulations for railway vehicles from the International Union of Railways (IUR) and various European countries. It differs from the French standard in both philosophy and performance level. Part 5 specifies the requirement levels for electrical devices. It defines the requirement level for electrical switchgear, depending on: The category of the rolling stock in which it is installed. The installation location: inside or outside. The severity level defined. Then, depending on the application, a performance level is imposed, with respect to fire behaviour and smoke toxicity criteria. Final distribution products come under the following classifications: Product category: E10 electrotechnical equipment. Product type: small electrotechnical products (low-power circuit breakers, contactors, switch-disconnectors, relays, etc.). Requirement R26. Rolling stock Rolling stock is classified according to two criteria: Four equipment categories. Four operating context categories (trains intended or not intended to be used underground, trains designed to run underground with an infrastructure allowing or not allowing them to quickly reach a station providing security for all passengers, etc.) that define a level of severity on a scale (HL) of 1 to 3. IEC/EN 61009-1 and 61009-2-1 The Vigi N40N modules, to be combined with a circuit breaker, incorporate in a single enclosure the residual current relay and the toroid. The residual current tripping device is electromechanical and operates without an auxiliary source. A homogeneous unit in compliance with the EN 61009-1 and EN 61009-2-1 standards, a residual current device retains all the characteristics of the circuit breaker alone; in particular, the thermal tripping threshold of the circuit breaker is retained in the presence of the earth leakage module. Operation When an earth fault occurs, the Vigi module causes automatic opening of the circuit breaker with which it is combined.
