MIRRORS - POWER 1998 Pontiac Bonneville 1998 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT General Motors Corp. - Power Mirrors Pontiac; Bonneville DESCRIPTION One mirror control switch adjusts both left (driver side) and right (passenger side) mirrors. Rotate mirror select switch left (counterclockwise) or right (clockwise) to select mirror, and use joystick to adjust mirror. Some models are available with heated and memory mirrors. Each power mirror assembly contains 2 reversible motors: an up/down motor and a left/right motor. Mirror control switch reverses polarity of motor circuit to change direction of mirror movement. Each motor contains a self-resetting circuit breaker, which opens when mirror reaches its mechanical limit of travel. On vehicles with memory seat/mirror systems, each power mirror assembly contains potentiometers that are used to determine mirror position. TROUBLE SHOOTING Before proceeding with specific testing, check the following for proper operation: * Check courtesy lights for proper * Check fuses, and replace as necessary. * Check and ensure grounds are clean and tight. * Check for broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction, but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. These circuits may be intermittent or resistive when loaded, and if possible, should be checked by monitoring voltage drop with system operational (under load). * Check for proper installation of aftermarket electronic equipment. SELF-DIAGNOSTICS Diagnostic trouble code tests are written specifically for use with GM Tech 1 or 2 scan tools. Generic scan tool can be used, but may have limited functions. DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE Some models will set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) if a problem occurs in the power mirror system. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS). Proceed to TESTING to diagnose system. After repair is complete, clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS). Recheck system RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) Use of Tech 1 or 2 scan tool is required to retrieve DTCs. Refer to scan tool manufacturer s instructions. CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)
To clear DTCs from memory, either to determine if malfunction will occur again or after making necessary repairs, disconnect power supply to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for at least 30 seconds or clear codes using a scan tool. TESTING * PLEASE READ THIS FIRST * Before performing following tests, ensure circuit ground, circuit harness wiring and circuit fuse are okay. Also, ensure all circuit connections are clean and tight. For testing of heated mirrors, see REAR WINDOW & MIRROR DEFOGGERS article. To identify connectors and wire colors, see WIRING DIAGRAMS. CAUTION: To prevent damage to terminals, Connector Test Adaptor Kit (J-35616-A) must be used whenever a diagnostic procedure requires checking or probing terminals. To locate and identify terminals, see WIRING DIAGRAMS. ONE MIRROR DOES NOT MOVE UP & DOWN 1) Using test light, backprobe between specified left front power mirror switch terminals. See TESTING OUTSIDE MIRROR SWITCH UP/DOWN CIRCUITS table. Using mirror select switch, select appropriate mirror. Operate left front power mirror switch UP, then DOWN. If test light illuminates in both positions, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate in both positions, go to step 3). TESTING OUTSIDE MIRROR SWITCH UP/DOWN CIRCUITS TABLE Left Mirror... 5) Repair open or short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. Recheck system ONE MIRROR DOES NOT MOVE LEFT & RIGHT 1) Using test light, backprobe between specified left front power mirror switch terminals. See TESTING OUTSIDE MIRROR SWITCH LEFT/RIGHT CIRCUITS table. Using mirror select switch, select appropriate mirror. Operate left front power mirror switch LEFT, then RIGHT. If test light illuminates in both positions, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate in both positions, go to step 3). Recheck system BOTH MIRRORS INOPERATIVE 1) Using test light, backprobe between ground and Orange wire terminal at left front power mirror switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 4). 2) Backprobe between Orange and Black wire terminals at left front power mirror switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 5). 4) Repair open or short to ground in Orange wire between left front power mirror switch and instrument panel fuse block. * PLEASE READ THIS FIRST * CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery. CAUTION: On some models, momentary actuation of power window switch can cause window to move directly to fully open position. When working inside door, leave ignition off whenever possible. POWER MIRROR SWITCH 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Insert small flat-blade tool between front edge of switch plate to disengage retainer clip. Lift switch plate and disconnect electrical connectors. Remove setscrew from remote mirror control, if necessary. To install, reverse removal procedure. POWER MIRROR FACE/GLASS 1) Pull mirror and backing plate from mirror housing. Disconnect electrical connectors. Ensure springs on actuator shafts are seated in groove. 2) To install, snap actuator shafts into drive unit. Reconnect electrical connectors. Rotate actuator shafts to align ears with corresponding slots in back side of mirror face. Align swivel on drive unit to pivot points on backing plate. 3) Using a block of wood to distribute pressure, push mirror in until it snaps. Tilt mirror toward upper actuator shaft, and push in on block until ratchet sound stops. Tilt mirror toward outside actuator shaft, and push in on block until ratchet sound stops. Check mirror POWER MIRROR ASSEMBLY On some models, if removing right power mirror, it may be necessary to detach part of instrument panel. 1) Remove switch plate. See POWER MIRROR SWITCH. Remove courtesy light. Unsnap at front end and remove lock rod knob. Remove inside handle cup at notch from handle bezel. Remove screw and inside handle bezel. Using small flat-blade tool, remove armrest applique at clip. Disconnect electrical connectors. Remove screws from holes in trim panel front, courtesy light opening and top of armrest handle. Remove trim panel. 2) Peel water deflector off door inner panel. Disconnect mirror electrical connectors. Remove nuts and power mirror assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten power mirror nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE INCH Lbs. (N.m)
