10. Benefits of the EPB service and reset tool The EPB service and reset tool allows interaction with the vehicle brake management electronics for maintenance and troubleshooting operations. The following functions may be available according to the type of vehicle and its build options: - cylinder opening/closing for vehicles equipped with electric parking brake to replace the brake pads; - electric parking brake pressure force adjustment; - electric brake disabling to replace brake pads; - braking system service reset - brake bleeding - brake system fault code reading - fault code reset from the control unit once the cause has been removed. Thanks to the integrated full multiplexer the instrument does not need adapter cables to move communication lines on different pins of the EOBD J1962 diagnosis connector. During all operations the vehicle dashboard must always be on (key ON but engine OFF). Otherwise the instrument will not be able to communicate with the vehicle onboard control unit and the relevant error will be triggered. Pay attention to those vehicles that switch off the dashboard after some time to save the battery. Vehicle models differ one from the other so for this reason operations available on one vehicle may be completely different from those available on other models. 11. Vehicle selection From the main menu select the vehicle brand, model and version/year. After this selection all available functions for that type of vehicle will be displayed. 12. Functions 12.1. Cylinder opening for vehicles equipped with EPB Make sure the vehicle is on level ground, so not liable to involuntary roll away. Always engage a gear, or in case of automatic transmission put in park position. During these operations the brake related mechanical parts will move. Make sure to keep all personnel a safe distance away from the electric parking brake working area. By selecting this function the instrument will open the cylinders to allow replacement of the brake pads which would be otherwise clamped up tight. After selecting the vehicle, enable the "EPB cylinder opening" function and follow the displayed messages carrying out the indicated operations. You will hear the EPB mechanical parts moving and some warning lights may blink in the cabin to indicate the opening operation in progress. As cylinders open the electric brake is released, so pay utmost attention to the vehicle position, and the safety of all nearby personnel. In case of system faults it may not be possible to activate the function correctly, these 12.2. Cylinder closure for vehicles equipped with EPB Once the brake pads have been replaced it is necessary to go back to the standard electric parking brake operation. During these operations the brake related mechanical parts will move. Make sure to keep all personnel a safe distance away from the electric parking brake working area. After selecting the vehicle, enable the "EPB cylinder closing" function and follow the displayed messages carrying out the indicated operations. You will hear the EPB mechanical parts moving and some warning lights may blink in the cabin to indicate the closing operation in progress. For some vehicles after replacing the brake pads it is necessary to adjust the electric parking brake tightening torque as described in the following paragraph. This operation is compulsory on vehicles provided with it, otherwise the electric parking brake may not operate correctly. 12.3. Tightening torque adjustment for vehicles equipped with EPB During these operations the brake related mechanical parts will move. Make sure to keep all personnel a safe distance away from the electric parking brake working area. As the cylinders open the electric brake is released, so be careful regarding involuntary vehicle movement and the possibility of incidents as a result; always conduct these operations on flat level ground or take precautions to stop involuntary vehicle movement. After selecting the vehicle, then select the "EPB tightening torque adj." function and follow the displayed messages carrying out the indicated operations. You will hear the EPB mechanic parts moving and some warning lights may blink in the cabin to indicate the opening operation in progress. 8 9

This operation is compulsory on vehicles provided with EPB it compensates for routine wear in the brake components; otherwise the electric parking brake may not operate correctly. The tightening torque adjustment is useful also in case of worn pads/discs that do not need to be replaced. 12.4. Electric parking brake disabling for vehicles equipped with EPB Make sure the vehicle is on level ground, so not liable to involuntary roll away. Always engage a gear, or in case of automatic transmission put in park position. For some vehicles it is not necessary to open the cylinders to replace the brake pads. Despite this, it is important to disable the system to avoid a brake accidental activation (e.g. door opening, brake activation, etc.) while working near it. After selecting the vehicle, enable the "EPB disabling" function and follow the displayed messages carrying out the indicated operations. You will hear the EPB mechanical parts moving and some warning lights may blink in the cabin to indicate the opening operation in progress. As cylinders open the electric brake is released, so pay utmost attention to the vehicle position. 12.5. Electric parking brake enabling for vehicles equipped with EPB Once the brake pads have been replaced it is necessary to go back to the standard electric parking brake operation. After selecting the vehicle, activate the "EPB enabling" function and follow the displayed messages by carrying out the indicated operations. Step Screenshot Description 1 Select the SETUP option from the main menu 2 Select Language to enable the display desired language. 3 Enter the password to enable the communication sw with the vehicle control unit. The password contains an expiration date which relates to the release it is associated to. Sykes-Pickavant recommend regular downloads of the software database via the internet, to be sure of having the latest version. The password provided with the tool enables the latest software to run from the password input date. From the setup menu select version to check the instrument database version as well as the activated version. 8. Software update advice Sykes-Pickavant recommend regular updates to the software via the Internet, to be sure to have the most up to date version of the tool. 9. Software update It is important to have the latest available software version installed in the instrument for maximum coverage. To update the instrument software it is necessary to have a PC and an Internet connection. Once the supplied CD has been installed, launch the installed software and press the main key on the first screen. Enter the provided password and follow the displayed instructions (insert the instrument SD card in the reader). After the update you may be required also to connect also the EPB service and reset tool to the PC in case a firmware update is available. 12.6. EPB electronics control unit Error and Fault reading The EPB Brake tool allows checking for the presence of brake system faults in the vehicle. To activate this function select "EPB diagnosis" in the main menu, and then "Error reading". The message "No errors" will be displayed if no error is present. If errors are found, the display will show the message "Errors in the control unit". Otherwise the display will show the error code provided by the control unit, as well as the error description and its status (if available): ATT; (Attention) indicates that a current error is present in the control unit. MEM; (Memorised) indicates that an error is no longer present (but memorised) in the control unit. Because of the screen display characteristics, only 2 faults can be displayed at the same time. If more than 2 faults are present use the "up" and "down" arrows to view the other present faults. 10 7

INSTALLATION of SD card 1 Remove the rear door screw 2 Remove the door to get access to the SD card compartment 3 Insert the SD card and refit the door with its screw 5. Power supply The TPMS Plus tool has no internal battery and is powered up only when connected the vehicle EOBD diagnosis socket. 12.7. Fault codes reset from the EPB control unit memory Once the fault has been removed it is good rule to reset the faults memorised in the control unit to immediately switch off the fault warning light and avoid incorrect diagnosis in the future. To activate this function select "EPB diagnosis" from the main menu, and then "Error reset". Once this function is completed the sw will automatically go back to the "Vehicle Diagnosis" section. At the end of this function enter the fault code reading function again to check that the fault memory has been reset. If the errors still remain in the control unit even after performing the reset function, it means that the cause of the faults cause has not been removed and so the control unit considers the fault still present. 12.8. Brake bleeding For some vehicles it is necessary to interact with their electronic control unit to perform the correct procedure of brake fluid change, sometimes known as brake purge. Select the vehicle and then "Brake bleeding". Follow all displayed instructions to correctly complete the operation. This procedure can take a few minutes. Interruption during the procedure or its wrong execution may lead to a fault, and thus dangerous operation of the vehicle braking system. 6. Instrument switching on/off The instrument is not provided with switching on/off button. It automatically turns on upon connection to the vehicle diagnosis socket and turns off upon its disconnection. 7. Navigation Use the arrows to navigate the menu, the "enter" key to select one item/function, and the "ESC" key to go back to the previous menu/quit the function. 8. Set-up It is possible personalise the tool settings by clicking on "Setup" in the main menu. 12.9. Braking system service reset For some vehicles it is necessary to interact with their electronic control units to reset the braking system service indicator. Select the vehicle and then "Brake service reset". Follow all displayed instructions to correctly complete the operation. This procedure only allows for resetting the braking system service warning light, NOT the warning light of other vehicle components such as engine oil, filters, etc. 12.10. ABS/ESP electronics control unit Error and Fault reading The Brake tool allows checking the presence of faults in the vehicle. To activate this function select "ABS/ESP diagnosis" in the main menu, and then "Error reading". The message "No errors" will be displayed if no error is present. If errors are found the display will show the message "Errors in the control unit". To review these errors and faults refer to section 12.6. 6 11

12.11. Fault codes reset from the ABS/ESP control unit memory Once the actual fault has been removed it is good rule to reset the faults memorised in the electronic control unit to immediately switch off the fault warning light and avoid incorrect diagnosis in the future. To activate this function select "ABS/ESP diagnosis" from the main menu, and then "Error reset". Once this function is completed the sw will automatically go back to the "Vehicle Diagnosis" section. At the end of this function enter the fault code reading function again to check that the fault memory has been reset. If the errors still remain in the control unit even after performing the reset function, it means that the faults cause has not been removed and so the control unit considers the fault still present. 13.
