Project Plnning esign & Mintennce Tips 6 Perform risk ssessment of the instlltion to ssess the consequences of flooding due to lockges of silt nd scle uild up within the pipe system. Repet this ssessment for unexpected hydrulic demnds due to ccidentl spillge, thunderstorms nd extrneous events. Perform the necessry risk ssessment if the system is likely to e sujected to therml shock. Within design limits, ACO Pipe is prticulrly tolernt of sudden temperture chnges without risk of dmge. Avoid selecting pipe sizes tht re t, or close to, their hydrulic cpcities, s the long-term effects of silt nd scle cn reduce system's hydrulic cpcity over time. For stormwter pplictions, check the geogrphicl loction to confirm the design rinfll intensity. Confirm the ctul grdient of the instlled pipe system. A level (or nerly level) grdient will hve reduced hydrulic performnce compred to instlltions with defined grdients. Assess the fluids to e drined in the system to void corrosion of the pipe nd/or sels. Checklist s follows: Identify ech chemicl contined in the fluid. Estlish chemicl concentrtion(s). Confirm mximum temperture of the solution. Given the ove informtion, the correct sel (see pges 20 nd 26) cn e selected. esign the system with the minimum numer of joints nd limit the numer of ends. This will help to reduce oth costs nd hydrulic losses. Provide good ccess points for clening/rodding to mintin the hydrulic performnce of the system. Cre should e tken to void dmge, oth during nd fter instlltion, s dents nd kinks will ffect the hydrulic performnce. For ove ground pplictions, dmge will lso ffect the system's esthetics. The following stndrds will ssist designers select the correct size of pipe system for prticulr ppliction: EN 12056: Grvity ringe Systems Inside Buildings. EN 752: rin nd Sewer Systems Outside Buildings. Refer to pges 8 nd 9 for hydrulic dt for ACO Pipe. Pipework Support Instlltion should e in ccordnce with the mnufcturer s recommendtions, EN12056 2, EN12056 3 nd EN752. esigners must ensure tht ll pipework is supported with rckets ccording to the requirements of AS/NZ3500 (see pge 25). Pipe Weights Engineers should e wre of minimum nd mximum weights when designing verticl stck nd horizontl pipe run systems (see pge 25).

ACO STAINLESS esigning Mintennce Progrmme With cre tken during friction nd instlltion, clening efore hnding over to the client should present no specil chllenges, lthough more ttention thn norml my e required if the instlltion period hs een prolonged. Where surfce contmintion is suspected, immedite ttention to clening fter instlltion will ensure troule free hndover. uring service, food nd everge hndling, phrmceuticl nd chemicl industry pplictions require extremely high levels of clenliness pplicle to ech ppliction. Advice is often sought regrding the frequency of clening stinless steel. Generlly, it is usully cceptle to only clen the metl when it is dirty to restore its originl ppernce. This my vry from one to four times yer for externl pplictions or it cn e dily in hygienic or ggressive environments. Stinless steel is esy to clen. Wshing with sop or mild detergent nd wrm wter, followed y cler wter rinse is usully quite dequte for mny industril pplictions. An enhnced esthetic ppernce will e chieved if the clened surfce is finlly wiped dry. If professionl mintennce is required (e.g. for uilding upgrdes), stinless steel cn e mechniclly clened or electropolished y specilists on site. See pge 27 for more informtion on cre nd mintennce. 7 www.cous.com.u/stinless

Project Plnning Hydrulic esign Compred to cst iron, cly nd vitreous pipe systems, stinless steel pipes hve considerly smoother ore (Mnning Coefficient: 0.011) nd in generl, re less susceptile to internl scling. In some instnces, low roughness coefficients (ks) re not generlly true reflection of the long-term hydrulic performnce of the instlled system. Roughness coefficients of 0.6mm should e used for rinwter/storm dringe nd 1.5mm for soil/foul dringe. Flow Tles Two sets of flow tles re presented within this design guide. Tle 1 is for pipes instlled with level (or nerly level) grdients where the stedy, uniform flow equtions re not pplicle. The dt therefore hs een generted from ACO's hydrulic design progrm 'Hydro' tht is sed on the equtions of sptilly-vried flow. Tle 2 is for pipes instlled with vrying grdients. The dt is sed on the Colerook-White eqution using n pproprite roughness coefficient for stinless steel. When drining storm or foul wter, it is inevitle tht sediment deposits will occur within the dringe system. Sediment nd scle deposits will reduce the flow rte through ny pipe system nd it is recommended tht n llownce is mde for this within the design nd plnning phse. 8 Tle 1. The repir coupling slides completely over pipe joint nd simply re-positioned to ridge the required pipe joint. Instlltion tip: mrk the finl position of the repir coupling on the instlled pipe system to ensure the coupling sels re positioned symmetriclly out the pipe joint.

Instlltion Pipe Assemly 22 The instlltion of ACO Pipe should e in ccordnce with the recommendtions elow nd with AS/NZ3500. Ensure tht ll tools re in good condition, electric tools nd leds must hve current sfety tgs. Pipe stnds must e stle to crry the pipe with no movement nd there must e no cron steel or rsive mteril in contct with the stinless steel pipe mteril. Pipe Assemly The ssemly of pipe joints is quick nd strightforwrd, requiring only light ppliction of luricnt (see pge 20) to the chmfered pipe end. 1. Mke sure oth ends re clen nd free of dirt. 2. Mke sure tht the correct sel is in plce (see pges 20 nd 26). 3. Ensure tht the mting ends of the pipes nd fittings re clen nd free from contmintion. Push-fit the pipe end into the socket ut do not wedge into the socket recess. Use hlf rottionl movement to the right nd left s the pipes come together. 4. When the pipes re fully engged, pull the pipes ck 6mm to 12mm to llow for therml expnsion. With 60º temperture rise, stinless steel expnds t rte of 0.99mm per metre. Pipe Cutting If it is necessry to dpt or shorten pipe lengths, then the cut must e squre, clen nd redy chmfered. Cutters re ville from ACO (see pge 23). These tools re designed to form the edge evel on the mle spigoted end of the pipe. Cron steel wheels re not permitted.

Instlltion Pipework Protection The instlltion of ACO Pipe should e in ccordnce with the recommendtions elow nd with AS/NZ3500. Below Ground Instlltion When pipework is to e instlled in the ground, plce the pipe in sndy ed of 75mm (minimum thickness) free of smll grvel, sticks, etc. The snd should e free of chlorides nd slt. uring instlltion, tke cre to not scrtch the surfce of the stinless with cron steel. Similrly, void sujecting the stinless steel pipes to welding nd grinding irorne hot prticles, metl shvings, nd chemicls which my cuse corrosion. Soil cover Where pipework is to e instlled eneth wter tle, pply the following soil depths: Pipe dimeters 50, 75, 110 Low density soil 15kg/m³ 400mm High density soil 23 kg/m³ 380mm Where the ground is permnently cold s experienced in some Alpine nd southern extremities of Austrli & New Zelnd, then the dringe my need to e heted. In generl however, the minimum permissile depth to void winter freezing of wter is 800mm. Note tht this recommendtion is pplicle where the ground does thw during spring nd ecomes quite wrm during summer. Bckfilling round the pipe cn only strt when the position of the pipe hs een checked nd pproved. Socket Clmps ACO Pipe, pipes nd fittings comprise push-fit socket joints. These will not e le to resist internl pressure eyond design limits unless precutions re mde to ensure tht the joints do not slide prt. In most cses, pproprite fixing to the uilding cn overcome this. If it is difficult however, or impossile to fix the pipes to the uilding, socket clmps (see pge 20) cn prevent the push-fit sockets nd spigot ends from sliding prt in the event of overlod or the genertion of excessive internl pressure. ACO Pipe socketed joints with socket clmps cn withstnd the following pressures: Pipe imensions [mm] Mximum Pressure [r] 50mm +2 75mm +2 110mm +2 160mm +1 24 Pipe dimeters 125, 160, 200, 250 Low soil density 15kg/m³ 580mm High soil density 23kg/m³ 650mm Structurl Penetrtions Where it is necessry for pipework to pss through the wlls, structurl decking or floors with wterproofing, the ACO Aplex Wll Sel system is ville, contct ACO.

ACO STAINLESS Pipework Support etils Horizontl Pipework The discretion of the instller should e pplied in ech instnce to ensure tht the pipe is dequtely supported. Generlly, when the pipe is completely full of wter, then the verticl deflection of the pipe etween rckets should not exceed 1.5mm. As guide, use the tle elow for rcket spcing on horizontl pipes. Position the highest rcket djcent to the top inlet of the pipe, then mount rckets t 3 metre spcings. At the ottom of the verticl pipe, use rcket within 200mm of the ottom. Fit rckets t ech chnge of pipework direction or junction points. The venting of verticl stcks shll e in complince with AS/NZ3500. Pipework should e t lest 35mm from the wll to fcilitte mintennce nd pinting. 25 Minimum nd Mximum Pipe Weights To ssist designers nd instllers with the selection of pproprite pipe supports, the tle elow sets out the weights for ll pipe sizes. Sel Mteril t ACO Pipe sockets re fitted with EPM sels s stndrd for regulr dringe pplictions. For prticulrly ggressive pplictions, FPM nd NBR sels re ville (see pge 20). Refer to the tle elow to ssess suitility, nd then contct ACO. EPM (Ethylene Propylene iene Monomer) EPM ws originlly developed during the 1950s for vehicle tyre pplictions. It reched wider pplictions ecuse of its suitility for outdoor use. FPM (Fluoroelstomer) FPM is fluorocron nd the est mteril for resistnce to hostile chemicl nd oil environments t norml nd elevted tempertures. This mteril is widely used in the chemicl nd phrmceuticl industries, ut is significntly more expensive thn EPM. NBR (Nitrile ruer) NBR hs good wter resistnce, excellent chemicl resistnce nd durility. ACO STAINLESS Cre nd Mintennce All grdes of stinless steel will stin nd discolour due to surfce deposits nd cn never e 100% mintennce free. In order to chieve mximum corrosion resistnce, the surfce of the stinless steel must e kept clen. Fctors Affecting Mintennce Surfce contmintion nd the formtion of deposits must e prevented in order to mintin durle nd hygienic surfce. These deposits my e minute prticles of iron or rust from other mterils used on the uilding site which hve come in contct with the pipework. Cre must e tken to void the cutting of cron steels, including rer, nd the storge nd erection of scffolding, ner the pipework. Industril nd even nturlly occurring tmospheric conditions cn produce deposits tht cn lso e corrosive, e.g. slt deposits from mrine conditions. The working environment cn lso produce corrosive conditions e.g. high humidity, such s in swimming pool, incresing the speed of discolourtion nd therefore requiring mintennce to e crried out on more frequent sis. Mny cleners, sterilisers nd leches, when used in ccordnce with mnufcturers' instructions re sfe, ut if used incorrectly (e.g. wrm or concentrted), they cn cuse discolourtion nd corrosion on the surfce of ny qulity of stinless steel. Strong cid solutions re sometimes used to clen msonry nd tiles ut they should never e permitted to come into contct with metls, including stinless steel. If this should hppen the cid solution must e removed immeditely y copious pplictions of clen wter. Wire rushes nd wire wool must not e used to remove mrks or cement spillge s this will only serve to introduce iron impurities onto the mteril surfce. 27 Prolem Clening Agent Comments Routine clening Sop or mild detergent nd wter Sponge, rinse with clen wter, (such s wshing up liquid). nd wipe dry if necessry.
