Hartlepool monthly report February 2016 Introduction Welcome to the February 2016 monthly report for Hartlepool power station. These reports are available to all members of the public on http://www. and on the Hartlepool Borough Council website, together with copies of the minutes from our Local Community Liaison Council meetings. We are keen to hear the views of our local communities. We recognise that good communication is a two-way process and we welcome your feedback and comments. Safety Operational safety On Saturday 27 February, a decision was made to shut down reactor 1 during start-up, to investigate an oil loss to one of the eight gas circulators. The gas circulator has since been replaced and the reactor is being returned to service. Environmental safety There were no environmental incidents in February. Minor injuries There were two minor injuries during February, one of which was deemed non-work related and the other was dealt with by first aid staff on site. The site takes safety very seriously and incidents are investigated fully to ensure they are avoided in the future. Plant status Hartlepool has two advanced gas cooled reactors with a net generation capacity of 1180 MWhs. As at 29 February: Reactor 1: Unit 1 is currently offline for maintenance Reactor 2: Unit 2 is at full load

Hartlepool visitor centre The visitor centre welcomed 1061 visitors in February, with 284 of them taking a plant tour. We currently have a total of 1126 future tour bookings. Tour times are: Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday AM & PM Friday AM Saturday AM (not always available on a Saturday) For larger groups, a full day visit combining both visits to Hartlepool power station and Teesmouth Field Centre can be arranged. Please contact Louise Corser on 01429 853582 or email hartlepoolsitetours@edf-energy.com for availability and further information. This month visitors have included: Nunthorpe Primary School, Middlesbrough Jesmond Primary School, Hartlepool Rift House Primary School, Hartlepool Archibald Primary School, Middlesbrough Hartburn Sea Scouts EDF Energy s Engineering Maintenance apprenticeship During February, the visitor centre hosted six days of apprentice aptitude testing as part of the EDF Energy s Engineering Maintenance apprenticeship recruitment process. Apprentice aptitude testing Interviews for those who make the final stage are scheduled for April 2016. Mentoring programme development centres On Monday 8 February, Hartlepool welcomed its third cohort of students from Hartlepool 6 th Form College and English Martyrs 6 th Form College to the station for their second development centre as part of our mentoring programme.

Students taking part in the development centre During the one day event, the student s abilities and behaviours were observed undertaking various activities by trained power station personnel. This was carried out in a relaxed, informal environment and gave the students invaluable experience of what they might expect if they apply for graduate placements in their future careers. The students with HR Manager, Brendan Garvey The next scheduled event will welcome cohort four for their first development centre in April 2016.

Education EDF Energy s Pod is an interactive website for teachers, community group leaders and children. It has free lesson plans, practical activities, assemblies, films, games and information, all with cross curricular links. All of the resources are aimed at 4 14 year olds and cover the topics of energy, waste, water, transport, biodiversity and climate science. Enhance your schools curriculum with the Pod and combine it with a visit to the power station. http://www.jointhepod.org/ EDF Energy charity fundraising events Marie Curie Cancer Care was appointed our company s charity partner by an employee vote in January 2013 with more than 7,000 employees across EDF Energy taking part in the selection. The partnership with Marie Curie supports our "to empower our people to be a force for good" ambition. EDF Energy and its contracting partners had an original target to raise 100,000 for each year of the three year partnership with the company committed to match fund this money by up to 100,000 for each year of the three year partnership making an overall target of 600,000. The fundraising has been so successful that so far 905, 814 has been raised with final fundraising activities up until April 2016, hoping to make the final total 1 million pounds! To continue our support for Marie Curie, Hartlepool has arranged the following fundraising activity: Charity Golf Day at Seaton Carew Golf Club - Monday 18 April 2016 We are also taking part in the Great Daffodil Appeal and the Marie Curie Big Push raffle. Tees Valley Community Foundation funding available Grants of up to 1000 are available from the EDF Energy fund administered by the Tees Valley Community Foundation. Please visit the TVCF website at www.teesvalleyfoundation.org to apply. Company news EDF Energy cuts standard gas price by 5% EDF Energy has announced a 5% cut to its standard gas price effective from 24 March. The reduction will decrease EDF Energy s average standard gas price by 31 and will benefit around 900,000 customers. Beatrice Bigois, Managing Director of Customers at EDF Energy said: We are pleased that we can reduce customers gas bills for the second time in just over a year.

Nuclear power station life extensions EDF Energy has announced new scheduled closure dates for four nuclear power stations, Heysham 1 and Heysham 2 in Lancashire, Hartlepool in Teesside and Torness in East Lothian. The scheduled closure dates for Heysham 1 and Hartlepool have been extended by five years to 2024 and Heysham 2 and Torness have been extended by seven years to 2030. The four nuclear plants together supply electricity to around a quarter of the UK s homes. They employ 2000 permanent staff as well as 1000 contractors. EDF Energy invests 600m a year in its nuclear plants and this investment is paying off. In 2015, their output was 60.6TWh, the highest level for 10 years and 50% higher than in 2008 when EDF Energy acquired the stations. EDF Energy awarded multi-million pound supply contract EDF Energy has been awarded The Energy Consortium s (TEC) electricity supply contract to power its portfolio of public sector organisations, following a competitive tender process. The multi-million pound annual agreement will see EDF Energy supply up to 1.6TWh of electricity to as many as 4,500 sites belonging to English & Welsh universities, colleges and museums from October 2016. The initial two-year contract is the outcome of a tender run by TEC, one of the UK s leading proponents and providers of collaborative energy procurement in the public sector. Béatrice Bigois, Managing Director of Customers at EDF Energy said: This is a fantastic win for EDF Energy that further cements our position as the UK s largest supplier of electricity to the public sector. We re delighted that TEC have chosen us based on the great value and service we can offer their members. Glossary of terms: Term Nuclear reportable event or incident Environmental event or incident Outage Boiler Spine Unit Definition Nuclear reportable events are events reported to the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in compliance with EDF Energy s nuclear site licences. Environmental events arise from wastes or discharges above permitted levels or breaches of permitted conditions. A period during which a reactor is shut down. The periodic shutdown of a reactor including for maintenance, inspection and testing or, in some cases, for refuelling is known as a planned outage. In the UK, some planned outages are known as statutory outages and are required by the conditions attached to the nuclear site licence needed to operate the station. Unscheduled shutdown of a reactor for a period is known as an unplanned outage. Just as your spine centrally supports the main parts of your body, the boiler spine centrally supports the mass of the boiler (around 140 tonnes), including all the boiler tubes (feed inlet, main boiler, reheater, superheater, water and pressurised steam). A unit refers to one of the reactors at the power station and its generating turbine.
