A new era of engine oils Durability Engine oil technology continues to be highly affected by three fundamental drivers. BUT: they don t exist in isolation! What is HTHS viscosity? New engine oil technology doesn t only impact on base viscosity, but also on HTHS viscosity Definition of HTHS viscosity HTHS viscosity is the measurement of how well fully warmed engine oil (testet at 150 C) flows within narrow spaces of fast moving engine parts. HTHS occurs in contact areas such as the ring interface, valve-train and gear contacts. How is it measured? Measured in millipascal second (mpa.s) or centipoise (cp). Modern engine oils now have HTHS value of 2.6 versus 3.5 over 10 years ago. The importance of HTHS viscosity Some research shows that a lower HTHS viscosity potentially improves fuel economy at a rate of 0.5% to 2% for each 0.5cP reduction, depending on engine type and conditions. This fuel economy is achieved through lower oil film thickness and lower drag which increases efficiency. Engine durability and HTHS A careful balance is required: getting the HTHS too low, and the results can be severely damaging for an engine: it can lead to permanent loss of viscosity or lower oil pressure at idle, meaning the durability of the oil is impacted drastically. Getting the balance right is key with HTHS viscosity it ensures excellent fuel economy in combination with high engine oil durability. The newer the engine oil, the lower the HTHS viscosity and the base engine oil viscosity. It is compatible with the most recent aftertreatment devices and meets the high fuel efficiency requirements of the VW Blue Oil. The oil stands out with its unique colour and chemical marker to ensure the use of the correct and authentic product. The chemical that is contained in the oil and used as unique identifier is zirconium. The reason why the oil has been developed in this way is to avoid and detect misapplications of engine oils in the future as this can have severe implications on fuel economy and durability for newer vehicles.
