CITY OF REDLANDS WATER DISTRIBUTION OPERATOR (WDO I, II, III, IV, V) EQUIPMENT OPERATOR DEFINITION Under direction, to operate construction, maintenance, and transportation equipment in a variety of maintenance activities including street, drainage, and water/wastewater utility system maintenance operations according to required standards. SUPERVISION EXERCISED May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Drive and operate light, medium, and heavy construction equipment including dump trucks, front loader, skip loader, bobcat, roller (large and small), grader, grade-all, sweeper, D6 bulldozer, John Deere tractor with mower attachment, backhoe, water truck, weed spray truck, line eraser/grinder, trailer for moving equipment, air compressor, aquatic tank (trucktrailer), and forklift. Repair and patch streets by sweeping surfaces, loading asphalt, and raking, shoveling, and rolling asphalt. Remove concrete with front loader and jack hammer. Remove graffiti and sign posts with front loader, and graffiti truck truck/pressure washer. Inspect ditches, drainage areas, and roadside shoulders for removal of weeds and application of herbicides and sprays. Perform emergency work such as road closures, street failures, and drain work. Install traffic cones and barricades for safety; assist Police and Fire Departments in emergency situations.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Methods and techniques of operating diesel and gasoline heavy and light equipment. Operations, services and activities of a public works maintenance program. Methods and techniques of public works construction, maintenance, and repair. Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in public works maintenance and water and sewer system maintenance. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Safe driving principles and practices. Skill to: Drive and operate light, medium, and heavy construction equipment including dump trucks, front loader, skip loader, bobcat, roller (large and small), grader, gradeall, sweeper, D6 bulldozer, John Deere tractor with mower attachment, backhoe, water truck, weed spray truck, line eraser/grinder, trailer for moving equipment, air compressor, aquatic tank (truck-trailer), and forklift. Use and operate the full range of hand tools and power tools in a safe and efficient manner. Perform a variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions. Ability to: Operate a motor vehicle safely.
Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Perform the full range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Ability to: Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment. Apply good judgment and practical knowledge to resolve unusual or irregular problems in the area of work assigned. Perform duties in a manner to maximize public safety in the area of work assigned. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Experience: Four years of experience in maintenance and construction work including two years of experience operating heavy equipment. Training: Equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented by journey level training in equipment operation. Possession of a valid Class B driver's license.
