Intermodal Equipment Markings 390.21 (g)(4)(i)-(v) Each unit of intermodal equipment must identify the IEP with its legal name and USDOT number. The IEP must be identified using any one of the following methods: The marking must appear on the curb side of the item of equipment; or The marking must appear on a curb-side label on the equipment; or The IEP s USDOT number must appear on the interchange agreement; or The marking must be shown on a document placed in a weathertight compartment affixed to the frame; or The USDOT number of the intermodal equipment provider is maintained in a database that is available via real-time internet (GIER registry) and telephonic access. 32

What then? If the vehicle is out of service it must be repaired before continuing Other, non-out of service violations must be repaired before the vehicle is re-dispatched If the driver is out of service he/she must comply with the out of service notice before driving Out of service for a period of time, etc. Driver must provide the motor carrier and the IEP with a copy of the inspection within 24 hours The motor carrier and the IEP must certify (signature on the inspection) the violations were repaired and returned the signed certification to the state 35
What then? Inspections are uploaded to FMCSA s Safer System database and to the state s Safetynet database Inspections uploaded to Safer are immediately available to other inspectors through Query Central State process inspections and then uploads the inspections for FMCSA s Motor Carrier Information Management System (MCMIS) FMCSA processes inspection for safety ratings, etc. States may issue Court citations for any noted violations 36
