AGENDA Mounting & Demounting of UHP and RunFlat Tyres - Issues experienced in the field - Results of the German working group wdk, BRV, DEKRA, ASA The Solutions provided by NUSSBAUM
Mounting / Demounting UHP and Run Flat Tyres In 2006 an order for an expertise commissioned a damage on a tyre 205/45R17 84V mounted on a MINI COOPER initiated a process to look deeper into the issues in mounting and demounting procedures of RF tyres
Mounting / Demounting UHP and Run Flat Tyres Following this investigation the suspicion was there that the damage was the result of wrong handling during the Mount / Demount procedure More than 50 mount and demount procedures were performed on tyre changers of several makes and the results were documented

Catalogue of possible damages and consequences Apparent damage: Strong castings to the bulge by lever and high tension at the traction point during demounting Cause of the damage: Unsuitable lever, high energy expenditure, to high tension during demounting Consequence: Check tyre for damage and air leakage. Check inner liner in this area Avoidance strategy: Use bead hold down devices and suitable lever, lift bead with little energy, use sufficient lubricants
CERTIFICATION OF TYRE CHANGERS The certification for the tire changer is done by a neutral official body, i.e. DEKRA, TÜV The certification process includes - App. 50 Mount and Demount procedures including bead breaking - Measurement of the forces in the traction point during Mounting and Demounting Costs are taken over by the manufacturer of the tire changer The certification is compellingly necessary for the approval through a car manufacturer After the tyre changer has passed the test a dedicated sticker and a certificate will be provided.
CERTIFICATION OF TYRE CHANGERS The Technical University in Darmstadt developed a device to measure the forces that are generated during MOUNTING in the traction point to measure the forces generated by the tyre lever during DEMOUNTING
CERTIFICATION OF TYRE CHANGERS With this device the exact forces can be measured and documented. The experience shows that forces up to 1,5 kn during MOUNTING and 2 kn during DEMOUNTING do not cause any damages to the RF tyre. (the forces shown in the graph below do exceed those values and the machine cannot be certified)
CERTIFICATION OF TYRE CHANGERS The certification of the tire changer is documented by the wdk sticker on the front of the machine A list of certified tire changers and the relevant mountinginstructions are available on the wdk homepage and can be downloaded from there http://www.wdk.de/de/publikationen.html

TIRE CHANGER TC 355
TIRE CHANGER TC 355 Automatic Mountinghead The automatic mounting head is designed in a way that NO tire lever is required This is an advantage especially when handling tires with hard side walls UHP and Run Flat tires) but does also help to reduce the efforts for the operator when handling standard tires The automatic mounting head is operated by one control only
TIRE CHANGER TC 355 Conventional Clamping of the wheel Today s tire changers with automatic mounting head are all clamping the wheel through the mid center hole. During clamping increased care is required Especially when handling UHP and Run Flat tires high forces are applied to the sidewall of the tire which can lead to a deformation of the mid center hole On the other hand every operator is used to clamp wheel through the 4 jaws of a standard turntable
TIRE CHANGER TC 355 Conventional Bead breaker Today s tire changers with automatic mounting head are all equipped with a roller bead breaker. This is pretty good when breaking the beads of UHP and Run Flat tires but has limits with standard tires that have softer side walls. In many cases these wheels cannot be handled on a special tire changer at all The TC 355 is equipped with a conventional bead breaker that can handle all types of tires, from motorcycle to standard tires up to UHP and Run Flat tires. Out of this the TC 355 is also the perfect solution during the high season in the workshop Of course the upper bead can be broken with the roller disc of the pneumatic mounting help

TIRE CHANGER TC 450
TIRE CHANGER TC 450 In the market there are mainly big special machines available to mount and demount difficult tires. Those do have very few similarities to standard tire changers, the machines require intensive training, in a lot of cases the operators are reluctant to start working with these machines The handling of tires, especially of UHP and Run Flat tires, is still a delicate matter even though in the meantime there are several instructions and accessories available for conventional tire changers Nevertheless tire changers that are especially designed for the handling of UHP and Run Flat tires cannot be used during high season when the job has to be done quickly The TC 450 combines the advantages of a special machine with those of a conventional tire changer and offers a solution to the operator that he is used to The TC 450 is wdk certified and replaces the TC 410, that is removed from the product offering
TIRE CHANGER TC 450 Automatic Mountinghead The automatic mounting head is designed in a way that NO tire lever is required This is an advantage especially when handling tires with hard side walls UHP and Run Flat tires) but does also help to reduce the efforts for the operator when handling standard tires The automatic mounting head is operated by one control only
TIRE CHANGER TC 450 Mounting column The mounting column does not, like on competitors machines, pneumatically swing to the back but swings to the side This movement is patented and unique in the market Thanks to the movement of the arm to side the machine can be placed close to a wall. Compared to competitors machines this saves app. 750 mm of space in the workshop
TIRE CHANGER TC 450 Conventional Clamping of the wheel Today s tire changers with automatic mounting head are all clamping the wheel through the mid center hole. During clamping increased care is required Especially when handling UHP and Run Flat tires high forces are applied to the sidewall of the tire which can lead to a deformation of the mid center hole On the other hand every operator is used to clamp wheel through the 4 jaws of a standard turntable In addition the turntable is adjustable in the height so that the operator is always standing in an ergonomic position respective to the wheel
TIRE CHANGER TC 450 Conventional Bead breaker Today s tire changers with automatic mounting head are all equipped with a roller bead breaker. This is pretty good when breaking the beads of UHP and Run Flat tires but has limits with standard tires that have softer side walls. In many cases these wheels cannot be handled on a special tire changer at all The TC 450 is equipped with a conventional bead breaker that can handle all types of tires, from motorcycle to standard tires up to UHP and Run Flat tires. Out of this the TC 450 is also the perfect solution during the high season in the workshop Of course the upper bead can be broken with the roller disc of the pneumatic mounting help The bead breaker itself is adjustable in 2 positions and can handle wheels up to 14 width
TIRE CHANGER TC 450 Variable speed The motor works via an inverter that drives the speed of the turntable, which is controlled using a foot pedal, continuously from 7 to 17 rpm The motor automatically adapts the speed of rotation to the opposed force, reducing the stress put on the tire during the mounting/demounting operation. Thus, tire damage is avoided.
TIRE CHANGER TC 450 Pneumatic Mount / Demount help device The pneumatic mount / demount device is included in the extend of delivery, already mounted to the TC 450. The mount / demount device assist in the following operations: Push the rim into the jaws to safely clamp the wheel. Since the cone automatically is blocked over the center of the wheel the operator does not have to take care that all jaws are in right position. On machines where the mount / demount device is attached to the right side the operator has to check carefully that the wheel is placed properly to the jaws Breaking the upper bead if this has not yet been done with the bead breaker blade Push the bead close to the mounting head to position the head Push the bead 180 opposite of the head into the drop center in order to demount the upper bead Push down the bead during mounting. One roller is pushing on the 2 o clock position while a second roller is turning with the movement of the wheel
