INTRODUCTION The Loftness Orchard Shredder is an efficient, dependable machine available in three cutting widths, used in a variety of heavy-duty shredding applications. Each model features the high quality manufacturing standards that make the Loftness name a leader in customer satisfaction of agricultural and industrial attachments. The shredder is ideal for use in orchards, with its ability to pulverize branch prunings - up to 3 in diameter. With 1/4 top and 1/2 end plates, the rugged body has the ability to withstand the most demanding use. Read this manual thoroughly before operating the machine. Loftness Manufacturing strives at all times to improve their product line. We reserve the right to make design changes without notice, or obligation to install such changes to units previously sold. Remember to record your model and serial number on space provided on warranty page, inside front cover. Right hand and left hand of the machine is determined by facing the direction of travel during operation. All illustrations it this manual may not show actual models or equipment, but are intended for reference only. Remember! It is the owner s responsibility for communicating information on the safe use and proper maintenance of this machine. Remember! To avoid damage or excessive wear, always engage or disengage PTO with engine at idle speed. 3

SAFETY The safety symbol above means: ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! Before anyone attempts to operate this machine, read and study the following safety information. In addition, make sure that every individual who operates or works with this equipment, whether family member or employee, is familiar with these safety precautions. REMEMBER: The careful operator is the best operator. Most accidents are caused by human error. Certain precautions must be observed to prevent the possibility of injury or damage. WHY IS SAFETY SO IMPORTANT? 3 BIG REASONS - ACCIDENTS DISABLE AND KILL ACCIDENTS CAN BE AVOIDED ACCIDENTS COST $ Consider the following: The estimated cost of US product liability suits is $100 billion more than the combined profits of the nation s 200 largest corporations (source - the White House Council on Competitiveness). For every $6 insurance companies pay to product liability claimants, another $7 is paid for defense counsel and related costs. (Source - Insurance Service Office s Closed Claim Study). In 1989, the average machine tool builder spent seven times more on product liability claims and expenses than they did on basic research and development. (Source - Machine Tool Builders Association Survey). 49% of Fortune 200 companies and more than 66% of small firms believe product liability has a major impact on their international competitiveness. (Source - The Conference Board). It isn t difficult to understand that all these avoidable costs will be passed on to the end user - YOU! 4

TRACTOR ATTACHMENT ATTACHING THE SHREDDER The shredder can be attached to any tractor with a PTO that conforms to ASAE-SAE standards. Adjust the hitch to permit PTO shaft to run as straight as possible. Connect hitch to drawbar, lift and lock all jack stands. WARNING: Be extremely careful not to bottom out or extend PTO shaft too far, as damage to tractor or shredder could occur. Do not use PTO adapters of any kind. WARNING: Do not operate without the universal joints locked to the tractor and implement shafts. CAUTION: Operate shredder only with a tractor of the same PTO RPM rating as the shredder. IMPORTANT: Use a safety locking device for connecting pins. Failure to do so could result in loss of hitch pin and possible damage to equipment. CAUTION: Never use a steel hammer when connecting or disconnecting a PTO shaft. JACK STAND During operation or transport, the Bulldog jack (located on the hitch) should be rotated and locked parallel with ground. 8

OPERATION BEFORE STARTING MACHINE Before operating the shredder, grease the machine. Adjust tire air pressure to the proper level. Check oil level in the gearbox. Review the operator s manual. START-UP AND SHUT-DOWN IMPORTANT: To avoid damage or excessive wear, always engage or disengage PTO with engine at idle speed. CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT The recommended cutting height is 2 inches. Continually cutting below this height or over uneven ground increases the likelihood that ground scalping could occur. Frequent scalping greatly reduces shredder component lifetimes. Loftness considers this pattern to be MISUSE, and subsequently will NOT be covered under warranty. It is recommended that cutting height be adjusted and controlled with the hydraulic cylinder. By using a preadjusted shredder cutting height, uniform shredding is the result. It is also easier to begin the new round by eliminating the need to adjust the cutting height every time. The most important advantage is that it eliminates the possibility of striking the ground with the rotor every time the machine is lowered to the cutting position. Another important consideration is the PTO shaft angle. For the longest PTO shaft life and minimum vibration, the tractor PTO shaft and the stub shaft on the shredder need to be parallel after adjustment into the operating position. It might be necessary to remove the PTO shaft from the shredder when adjusting the cutting height for a better viewpoint to get the shaft angles similar. See figure below. TRACTOR PTO SHAFT Lines should be parallel SHREDDER STUB SHAFT OPERATING SPEED Various shredding conditions require different ground speeds. Under most conditions, the tractor can be driven between 3 and 7 MPH without causing undue wear on the shredder. WARNING: Operating the shredder below the rated RPM speed will reduce rotor speed and cause improper cutting. In difficult conditions, reduce tractor travel speed by downshifting gears while maintaining rated engine RPM. Severely difficult conditions may require a delay until conditions improve. WARNING: Do NOT operate the shredder above the rated RPM. 9

MAINTAINING ROTOR BALANCE The rotor of the shredder is factory balanced and must remain in balance during the life of the machine. Should any hammer knives on the machine need replacing, be certain to replace the hammer knife directly opposite to avoid vibration and maintain the rotor balance. If a hammer knife is not available, take the opposite one off until two new hammer knives can be replaced. CAUTION: Should excessive vibration occur, disengage the tractor PTO immediately and shut off the tractor. Do not continue operation until the problem has been determined and corrected. CAUTION: Be sure the rotor has stopped completely before checking the hammer knives. CAUTION: Repeated impact of the hammer knives with ground or other hard objects can cause excessive wear and damage to the tractor or shredder. Be sure to maintain recommended ground clearance as specified in this manual. BELT TENSION The rotor drive belts should have 1/2 maximum deflection at the midpoint between the pulleys. LUBRICATION The operation and component lifetimes of this machine are very dependent on regular and proper lubrication. The frequency of lubrication recommended below is based on normal conditions. Severe or unusual conditions may determine actual service requirements. REPLACE ANY BROKEN OR MISSING GREASE FITTINGS. BE SURE TO CLEAN FITTING BEFORE GREASING. NOTE: Rotor bearings CAN NOT be damaged by over-greasing. The following items require lubrication every eight (8) hours of running time: Outer rotor bearings (2) located on the outside ends of the shredder, behind belt cover. CV PTO shaft has (3) U-joints and (2) additional fittings located under the bell shield The following items require lubrication every twenty-five (25) hours of running time: Telescoping PTO tube (1) located by lining up the hole in the PTO guard with the fitting. Line shaft universal joints (2) located on either side of the gearbox. Drive pulley shaft bearing (2) located behind the drive pulley inside the belt compartment. The following items require lubrication every fifty (50) hours of running time: Belt idler bracket (2) located inside the belt compartment. The following items require lubrication every one hundred (100) hours of running time: Wheel bearings Gearbox (change oil with #90 wt.) 10
