Jatropha Initiative KAKUTE EXPERIENCE Northern Tanzania.

Background. From year 2000-2004 the main project in Tanzania that was promoting Jatropha curcas for commercial use is ARI-Monduli and ARI- Arumeru project of KAKUTE and its local partner Heifer Project Tanzania. Working only in the Monduli and Arumeru Districts. This four-year pilot effort has expanded Jatropha production processing and use, with very promising preliminary results.

The Goals. To create means of sustainable income to the poor women in rural while at the same time control soil erosion and improve land use management.

Team/Resources and location. KAKUTE got its support from partner through collaboration and provide technical support to its beneficiaries. Partner engage KAKUTE Limited as project technical supporting agency. Project operate within North Eastern Zone of Tanzania (Monduli and Arumeru district.)

The choice of sub sector. The Jatropha sub sector within KAKUTE is made up of three different options Oil and seedcake for House hold energy. Soap making for income earning Bio-diesel for off grid electrification.

The sector has four main area of development to increase supply of seed. Erosion control and natural resources management. Promotion of women economic activities. Poverty reduction and creating of rural industry activities. Provision of household renewable energy for rural community.

KAKUTE development methodology KAKUTE develop product related to Jatropha and its market. Product are demonstrated to district government official and beneficiaries at village level. Active women group and organizations were identified as local partner Training material and demonstration program are done at village level.

PROMOTION OF WOMEN ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AND MARKETING OF THE PRODUC IS AN INCETIVE FOR WOMEN TO GROW MOR SEEDS.

The challenge and constraints. Insufficient seed supply for commercial market. Our strength is the increase demand for Jatropha seeds and its product. Our weakness is limited resources to support commercial market and expansion to wider area.

KAKUTE promotional strategy. Awareness and promotion of Jatropha tree planting and seeds collection. Awareness and promotion of natural resource management and environment. Promotion for decentralize oil seed processing technology Ram press and screw expeller. Promotion of soap making and market development.

Products and services. KAKUTE promote micro enterprise at the village level. Training women groups in establish commercial nursery and bulking seeds collected. Training on soap making and market development. Training youth on oil processing. Training sales outlet on marketing of the products.

Current Status and output Women groups supply tree seedlings, planting of the cuttings, collect pressing seeds, processing oil and making soap for sale. Youth are employed for oil processing Seed cake are used for biogas plants. Oil residue is used to cure animal skin problems.
