Transmission Components
Innovative designs that improve performance, durability and efficiency The Timken Company, a leading designer and manufacturer of engineered components for transmission applications, continually identifies innovative ways to improve products. Timken engineers also work collaboratively with automotive engineers to develop custom solutions to transmission design challenges. Automakers seek to improve vehicle performance in terms of drivability, durability, fuel economy and value. Timken is the supplier of choice for transmission designers because of our strong technical support and longstanding commitment to performance and quality. Timken and Torrington, now a unified entity, have established solid reputations for technical expertise, reliability and cost effectiveness. Products with a proven track record Timken is a constant within the automotive industry, effectively solving engineering issues to make components and overall systems more reliable, durable and cost effective. In early automatic transmission designs, engineers faced a hurdle in trying to efficiently transmit high axial loads through rotating components. Timken led the way by inventing the needle roller thrust bearing, which exceeded all performance and packaging requirements. That innovative spirit continues today with the creation of thrust bearing assemblies, tailored specifically for individual positions within the transmission. Design engineers have multiple mounting options and access to features that enhance assembly, lubrication and performance. Timken has a legacy of innovation and customer solutions. Over the years, Timken has developed solutions to many critical transmission design challenges with products such as tapered roller bearings, profiled planetary rollers, planetary cage and roller assemblies, park rods and combination input bearings just to name a few. The Timken Company s Automotive Vision Be the most valued auto supplier in the world by making vehicles better through the control and transfer of power. Responsiveness to redesign needs Timken is committed to meeting the needs of design engineers as the industry converts to five- and six-speed automatics, automated manuals, continuously variable, hybrid or nearly any other type of transmission. We go beyond the norm to provide a collaborative design environment, where we listen to customers then jointly develop reliable solutions for bearing and nonbearing applications.
A commitment to speed We meet design challenges then work hard to compress the time from concept to launch. We are committed to providing responsive solutions using Timken state-of-the-art analysis tools, along with prototypes of our products, to meet the time pressures faced by your design team. Superior technical support Timken Torrington products are known for excellence in performance, quality, durability and value. These products are backed by broad technical support and responsiveness. Our global facilities use Lean Six Sigma processes to ensure that products will meet or exceed standards. Thorough testing enhances quality and component life, provides trouble-free assembly and minimizes transmission durability concerns. Boosting fuel economy and reducing emissions Today's transmissions are designed with larger gear-ratio spreads, requiring additional shafts and bearings as part of the transmission design. Timken is designing more efficient, compact bearings allowing for increased power density. We are developing higher power-density bearing designs to manage higher torque levels generated within optimized design envelopes. Expanding your options Timken designs and manufactures a wide array of leading transmission components, including: Automatic transmission applications Thrust bearings Needle rollers Planetary caged rollers Tapered roller bearings Drawn cups Transfer sleeves Pump vanes Customized designs Planet shafts Manual transmission applications Caged rollers Tapered roller bearings Pilot bearings Machined race bearings Drawn cups
High-performance systems. High-performance solutions. Timken provides technical solutions for customized, high-performance transmission products that offer increased power density and life. We pride ourselves on analytical capabilities in transmission design, as well as in product and process development. Using leading edge technologies, such as dynamic modeling, we can optimize system life and dramatically shorten product development cycles. Timken long-life thrust bearings extend system life compared to conventional bearings. These bearings feature smaller packages and higher thrust capacities, enhancing power density. Increased power density also is the goal of Timken's bi-directional overrunning clutch for advanced power transmission. Its cost-effective, compact design features high bi-directional torque and reduced mass and offers improved engagement control over a complete range of operating modes. Timken s compact bi-directional clutch design is ideal for advanced power transmission systems. trim waste Timken FEA model of planetary carrier
Turn to Timken for innovation Timken engineers helped to solve problems related to securing planet shafts to the carrier. Our engineers designed a planet shaft with a specific hardness pattern and soft detent ends. This revolutionary approach allows manufacturers to stake shafts in place, drastically reducing costs and assembly times. To increase the torque capacity of automatic transmission planetary gear sets while reducing the package size, we developed ideal roller profiles. These profiles reduce planetary system stress, which enhances durability within the available envelope. trim waste One automaker sought a threefold increase in torque for its automatic transmission design. Timken introduced the P900 tapered roller bearing designed with precision, downsized components to meet the higher power-density demand.
