THE FIELD INSTALLATION OF THIS LED RETROFIT KIT INTO A SIGN IS SUBJECT TO THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE AUTHORITY HAVING JURISDICTION. CAUTION: TURN OFF POWER TO THE SIGN BEFORE INSPECTING OR REMOVING EXISTING LIGHT SOURCE. THE POWER MUST REMAIN OFF WHILE INSTALLING THE LED RETROFIT KIT. THE UL CLASSIFICATION MARK ON THIS LED RETROFIT KIT REQUIRES THE KIT BE INSTALLED IN A UL LISTED SIGN ONLY. Scope: This procedure is for the installation or retrofit of the PDX family of products and power supply. Licensed electricians should provide all installation and hook-up of both the primary and secondary input/outputs of the power supply. All installation and hook-up should be done in accordance with all National and Local codes and permits. Tools Required Drill, screwdriver, wire strippers, wire cutters, tape measure and sheet metal scissors Supplies Required Solid 18 AWG NEC class 2 wire Cable tie downs or zip ties Wire nuts sized for wire used #6 Sheet metal screws or rivets Non-Hardening outdoor caulk Conduit and Conduit connectors sized appropriately Page 3
POWER UNIT INSTALLATION with optional box 1. Secure power unit (Figure 5) in suitable location. 2. Remove cover from power unit. Power Unit 3. Connect secondary wiring (12VDC) per local code according to supplied wiring diagram. Recommended cable is solid 18AWG NEC Class 2 cable. 4. Connect branch wiring per local code according to supplied wiring diagram.(note: Minimum primary wire size is 16 AWG 300 Volt) 5. Power unit must be grounded using the green wire located in the primary wire cavity of the power unit. Secondary Wiring (12 VDC) Power Unit Cover 6. Install power unit cover. Branch Wiring Figure 5: Power unit Page 4
PX INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Modules on a stick for installation in a fluorescent spring mount 1. Disable Power and remove ballast. 2. If a retrofit, open sign cabinet face(s), disconnect source and remove all ballasts, neon or other light source to be retrofitted. All materials must be disposed of in accordance with applicable laws. 3. Clean interior and exterior of sign. 4. Measure applications; Width, length, and depth using Recommended Layout Chart to determine the modules required. See Figure 6 for Recommended Layout Chart spacing modules center-to-center. Be sure to test to make sure you are satisfied before proceeding. 5. Seal all existing holes that will not be used for the new installation. 6. Cut the wires according to your design and necessary number of modules you need. 7. Mount the Z-Brackets on the extrusion ends. 8. Insert Z-Brackets into the fluorescent spring mounts as shown. 9. Connect 12VDC Class 2 power supply to red (+) and blue (-) wires of PX1 stick. Page 5
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Disable power. Individual Module 2. If a retrofit, open channel letter face(s), disconnect source and remove all ballasts, neon or other light source to be retrofitted. All material must be disposed of in accordance with applicable laws. 3. Clean interior and exterior of sign. 4. Measure application; Width, length, and depth using Recommended Layout Chart to determine the modules required. See Figure 5 for Recommended Layout Chart spacing modules center-center. Be sure to test your first letter to make sure you are satisfied before proceeding. 5. Seal all existing holes that will not be used for the new installation. Figure 6 6. Cut the wires according to your design and necessary number of modules you need. 7. Peel off modules tape s protective cover to expose adhesive layer. Place modules on mounting surface as indicated on marked locations. Press firmly on modules (Do NOT press on lens) to ensure complete adhesion of tape. 8. Install mounting screw in module. It is often necessary to use at least one screw mounting for permanent applications. (Requires #6 Self Drilling Screws) Add silicone for additional security if desired. Page 6
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS WIRING 9. Connect separate runs of product within a letter using 18 AWG wire and wire nuts. 10. 18 AWG Class 2 wires should be used to connect modules from letter to letter. 11. 2 conductor plenum rated cable should be used to connect a run of modules to a power supply. 12. All runs through a wall must either be in a conduit or pass-thru or be made with class 2 wire. 13. Although jumps can be made from letter to letter and then from the final letter to the power supply, the preferred method is to run each letter to the power supply. Limit the total number of modules per run to 1/3 of the total power supply load and connect both sides of the run to power supply. This will increase your load balance and light uniformity. 14. For power supply loading see Figure 7. Figure 7 Page 7
15. Proper polarity electrical connection from power supply to US LED PDX Series modules: Blue wire from power supply to module Blue wire is Negative. Red wire from power supply to module Red wire is Positive. See Figure 8 for Wiring Diagram. Figure 8 TROUBLESHOOTING Symptom Possible Cause Solution A single module not lighting Malfunction on module Replace module. LEDs flicker A. Underloaded or overloaded A. Adjust loads on power sources to be within recommended limits. B. Malfunctioning power source B. Replace power source. A. Bad wire connections A. Restore connection. Entire product run is not lighting B. If only one run of product on power source, malfunctioning power source B. Check power source and replace if appropriate. C. Short C. Search wiring for a short circuit between the red and blue wires. Replace bad wiring or use electrical tape to insulate the bad wire(s). D. Overload D. Adjust loads on power sources to be within recommended limits. Page 8
