Florida s sunny weather, beautiful beaches, and scenic highways make it a popular place for motorcycle enthusiasts. The state hosts popular motorcycle rallies such as Biketoberfest and Bike Week in Daytona and Thunder Beach in Panama City. Florida s growing population and popularity with motorcycle enthusiasts, make motorcycle safety an important issue. The number of motorcycle crashes and injuries in Florida more than doubled between the late 1990 and 2008. It is the priority of the Florida Motorcycle Safety Coalition to reduce motorcycle related fatalities, injuries, and crashes in Florida.
Motorcyclists are part of the Vulnerable Road Users emphasis area of Florida s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP). The Florida Motorcycle Strategic Safety Plan (MSSP) was developed based on Florida SHSP. The major goal of the Florida s Motorcycle Safety Coalition is to improve motorcycle safety in Florida. The Coalition works with safety partners around the state to reduce fatalities and serious injuries to motorcycle riders and their passengers.
