Since September 2005, it has been a limited company whose capital is presently held entirely by EDF. Its independence is guaranteed by the Commission de Régulation de l Energie (CRE, the French Energy Regulatory Commission), set up in 2000. With 100,000 km of lines between 63,000 and 400,000 volts and 46 cross-border lines, the network operated by RTE is the largest in Europe. RTE has an annual turnover of about 4 billion Euros and currently employs some 8,300 staff. 2 Turkey

Background 1946: Creation of Electricité de France, a State company responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity on a nation-wide level. 1996: European Directive 96/92/EC concerning the common rules for the internal electricity market. February 2000: European Directive 96/92/ EC passed into French law. July 1, 2000: Creation of RTE, the sole operator of the French power transmission system, an independent entity within the EDF Group. RTE, the heir to the know-how of power system operation and of transmission asset management, becomes the sole trustee and guarantor of this proficiency.
