INTRODUCTION This survey aimed to understand awareness and perceptions surrounding the use of drones to identify and collect information in Canada, United States, and United Kingdom. The questions asked individuals whether they had a basic awareness of various Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) applications, as well as assessed support for how they are being used and in what scenarios. The survey was conducted by the polling company Vision Critical in January 2014 based on a set of questions developed by the Surveillance Drones Research Team, Surveillance Studies Centre, Queen s University. There are three separate data files for this survey Canada, United States, and United Kingdom. METADATA Sample Participants for Angus Reid Global surveys are taken from American, British, and Canadian adults who are members of the Springboard America, Springboard UK, and Angus Reid Forum panels. An online survey was completed with a balanced random sampling of online panels in each country. Sample size Canada = 3045 United Kingston = 2008 United States = 3022 Methodology A split cell (monadic) design was used to separate perceptions surrounding forms of information identification and collection in general from perceptions surrounding information identification and collection when drones are used. Within each country, interviews were randomly split into one of four cells and respondents were asked to respond to one of four surveillance related topics. Steps were taken to ensure even distribution based on completed interviews. Piloted Aircraft These questions were about the use of piloted aircraft in information identification and collection for a range of purposes. Piloted aircraft include aerial vehicles such as planes and helicopters, of various sizes, operated by one or more pilots onboard the aircraft. (Canada n=761; UK n=502; US n=760) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles These questions are about the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in information identification and collection for a range of purposes. Unmanned aerial vehicles also known as drones or 2

remotely piloted vehicles include aerial vehicles such as planes and helicopters, of various sizes, operated by one or more pilots who are not onboard the aircraft. These questions focus on aircraft that do not carry weapons and are used for information collection purposes only. (Canada n=761; UK n=502; US n=751) Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles These questions are about the use of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles in information identification and collection for a range of purposes. Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles also known as drones include aerial vehicles such as planes and helicopters, of various sizes, operated by an onboard computer without a pilot controlling the aircraft. These questions focus on aircraft that do not carry weapons and are used for information collection purposes only. (Canada n=762; UK n=500; US n=753) Control These questions are about information identification and collections for a range of purposes. (Canada n=761; UK n=504; US n=758) Geographic Coverage Canada, US, UK Weight Post data collection, results were weighted to match population age, gender, and regional distribution. QUESTIONNAIRE [INTRODUCTION SCREEN] [Programmer, show version based on cell] Version 1: Piloted Aircraft These questions are about the use of piloted aircraft in information identification and collection for a range of purposes. Piloted aircraft include aerial vehicles such as planes and helicopters, of various sizes, operated by one or more pilots onboard the aircraft. These questions focus on aircraft that do not carry weapons and are used for information collection purposes only. Version 2: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles These questions are about the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in information identification and collection for a range of purposes. Unmanned aerial vehicles also known as drones or remotely piloted vehicles include aerial vehicles such as planes and helicopters, of various sizes, operated by one or more pilots who are not onboard the aircraft. These questions focus on aircraft that do not carry weapons and are used for information collection purposes only. Version 3: Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles These questions are about the use of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles in information identification and collection for a range of purposes. Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles also known as drones include aerial vehicles such as planes and helicopters, of various sizes, operated by an onboard computer without a pilot controlling the aircraft. These questions focus on aircraft that do not carry weapons and are used for information collection purposes only. Version 4: Control These questions are about information identification and collection for a range of purposes. 4

Section 1: Basic Awareness The goal of this question is to have people state what areas they feel that drones are currently being used for in Canada. The edited list that we have below is taken from a Transport Canada web page and, according to our current understanding, they are all things that drones are currently being used for in Canada. In this question we are looking to get a sense of people s awareness regarding drone use. [Question format: CARD SORT] Q1_General_Awareness [Programmer based on cell, replace question text in square brackets] Thinking of [piloted aircraft / unmanned aerial vehicles / autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles / DO NOT SHOW THIS SENTENCE AT ALL FOR CONTROL] use in [based on country: Canada/the US/the UK] For which of the following purposes, if any, is information currently collected or identified [using piloted aircraft / using unmanned aerial vehicles / using autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles / EMPTY FOR CONTROL] in [based on country: Canada/the US/the UK]? Section 2: What Drones Are, How they are Being Used, and Scenarios The goal of this question is to gain an understanding of how comfortable people are with the data collection capabilities of drones, and then place this ability within specific institutions and for specific uses. A previous poll of Canadians conducted in Jan 2013 by Phoenix found that people were very comfortable with almost all institutions using drones in Canada. Our hope was to bring greater complexity to the question by inserting the capacity of data collection and the reasons that various institutions would be using UAV.
