UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS AGRONOMY PROGRESS REPORT Agricultural Experiment Station Cooperative Extension No. 288 October 1992 1992 REGIONAL BARLEY, COMMON AND DURUM WHEAT, TRITICALE, AND OAT PERFORMANCE TESTS IN CALIFORNIA1 L. F. Jackson 2, C. O. Qualset S, Y. P. PurlS, R. L. WennigA, H. Vogt", L. K. Gibbs 4, M. CampbelJfi, A. Fulton 6, T. Kearney6, P. Mauk 6, D. Munier 6, M. Smith 6, B. Weir 6, C. Wick 6, J. Williams 6, and s. Wright 6 University of California Cooperative Extension regional cereal evaluation tests were conducted in the Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Imperial Valleys and in the south central coastal region in 1992. Entries in the tests included standard cultivars, new and soon-to-be released cultivars, and advanced breeding lines from both public (primarily, the University of California) and private cereal breeding programs. Barleys (41 entries for irrigated sites and 44 entries for rainfed sites) were evaluated at 8 locations; common wheats (40 entries), at 10 locations; durum wheats (35 entries), at 3 locations; triticales (8 entries), at 4 locations; and oats (13 entries), at 4 locations. A cereal hay/forage test (15 entries) was evaluated at 2 locations. Tests were conducted at University of California Field Stations or in fields of cooperating growers. Nurseries were planted at a seeding rate of 1.2 million seeds per acre for common and durum wheat tests if irrigation was planned (requiring from 82 to 135 lb/acre for common wheat and from 76 to 168 lb/acre for durum wheat, depending on the entry) and at million seeds per acre for rainfed wheat and all barley, triticale and oat tests (requiring from 69 to 112 lb/acre for common wheat, 69 to 117 lb/acre for barley, 73 to 102lb/acre for triticale, and 56 to 97 lb/acre for oat, depending on the entry). Randomized complete block designs with four replications were used. Each plot was six drill rows wide (6-inch row spacing) and 25 feet long, except at the UC Desert Research and Extension Center where plots consisted of five rows, 16 feet long. Grain was harvested with a Wintersteiger Seedmaster Universal 150 plot combine. Foliar diseases were assessed at the soft-to-medium dough stage of growth by estimating the percentages of areas of second leaves (flag-ilea!) affected. BYD assessments, however, were based on the percentage of plants showing symptoms. Black point and yellowberry of wheat were assessed on grain samples after harvest. Yield, test weight, kernel weight, plant height, days to heading and maturity, lodging, shattering, disease reaction, and grain quality were determined as indicated in the tables. Information Qocation, planting date, soil type, previous crop, fertilization, irrigation, rainfall) regarding each site is given in Table 1. IThese tests were conducted by the UC Davis Department of Agronomy and Range Science Department and Cooperative Extension. Land for the tests, the grain produced and other facilities were contributed by cooperating growers identified in Table 1. Quality evaluations were provided by General Mills, Inc., Vallejo, CA; the Hard Red Spring and Durum Wheat Quality Laboratory, USDA, North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND; and the California Wheat Commission. The assistance of growers and quality laboratories is acknowledged with appreciation. The regional testing program is supported in part by funds provided by the California Crop Improvement Association and the California Wheat Commission. 2Extension Agronomist, 3Agronomist, 4StaffResearch Associates, Department of Agronomy and Range Science, UC Davis, and fluc Cooperative Extension Farm Advisors in Stanislaus, Kings, Yolo, Sacramento, Kern, San Luis Obispo, Merced, Butte, Sutter, and Tulare counties, respectively. The 6:mall grain acreage lor California in 1991/92 was substantially above that of 1990/91. Common wheat was planted. on 600,000 acres, SS% :more than last year, while durum wheat, at 57,000 acres, mostly in the Imperial Valley, was 62% more. The California Wheat Commission conducted a wheat cultivar survey, and reported a.crea.ge of as different wheat eultivars. Despite this diversity, a few cultivars dornm""kcl h" "'''''''''''8''- VOC01l"G. RoO, W'ith 21'7,000 acres (60% olthe San Joaquin Valley acreage), Anza, with 137,000 acres (2nd in both the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys), Yolo, with 127,000 acres (lst in the Sacramento Valley), and the hard white spring cultivar Klasic, with 42,000 acres, together accounted for 87% ofthe common wheat acreage. Barley acreage was down slightly this year to 230,000 planted acres, compared to 240,000 acres last year. Oats were planted on 400,000 acres (35,000 acres for grain), compared to 380,000 acres last year. Diseases were much more severe this year than in the past 5 years because offavorable temperatures and rainfall during the early spring. Considerable rain from January through March, and a few isolated showers in an otherwise dry April (except for S. California where flooding occurred) brought S. California, the south-central coast, the San Joaquin valley and the southern half of the Sacramento Valley to near normal or above normal rainfall totals. Areas that were dryer than normal included the northern half of the Sacramento Valley, the north coast and the NE corner ofthe state. Yields in general were average to slightly below average. Many growers in the Sacramento Valley did not irrigate because of the favorable winter moisture, and ended up stressing the crop when average temperatures for the month of May (the main portion of the grain-fill period) were the highest ever recorded. As a result of the high temperatures in May, test weights and kernel sizes were lower than normal. Diseases were damaging. The most widespread disease was leafrust-both on wheat and barley. Leaf rust was most damaging on wheat in the San Joaquin Valley since the bulk of the acreage there is Yecora Rojo, a susceptible cultivar, while less damaging in the Sacramento Valley where Yolo, the predominant cultivar, is moderately resistant. A yield loss ofabout 5% is estimated for wheat in the San Joaquin Valley. Septoria tritici blotch was severe in the Sacramento Valley, more so on Klasic and Anza than on Yolo. BYD was severe in some areas as well On barley. the common foliar diseases scald, net blotch, leaf rust, powdery mildew, and BYD were severe in some areas of the state. BARLEY The UC Regional barley nursery contained 41 entries (3 additional entries were tested at rainfed sites only), including 11 released cultivars and the remainder advanced breeding lines from 5 programs (University ofcalifornia, Western PlantBreeders, Farmers MarketingCorporation, Arizona Plant Breeders, and Busch Agricultural Resources Inc.). Two of the entries were 2-row spring malting barleys (2B86-5113 and 2B88-5133), two were 6-row spring malting barleys (6B84-2715 and B1614), while the remainder were 6-row spring feed barleys. Disease pressure was high for scald, net blotch, BYD, powdery mildew, and leaf rust at various sites. Thirty entries showed high susceptibility to scald (3 entries, UC 603, Max, and APB 96, had very good resistance); 20, to powdery mildew; 18, to leafrust (3 entries, 8690/14, UCD 87-7568, and B1614, had very good resistance); 12, to net blotch; and 13, to BYD (7 had good resistance). Average yields ranged from 3160 Ib/acre (1150-4210 lb/acre) at the rainfed Yolo site to 5420 lb/acre (4000-6560 lb/acre) at Butte (Tables 2-10). Entries UCD 87-10395, DA 588-83, UCD 89-5853, and 8690/14 were the highest yielding in the Sacramento Valley; UCD 87-10395, in the San Joaquin Valley, and UC 337, DA 586-14, and UCD 89-4759, in rainfed areas. In the three-year period 1990-92, entries Sunbar 458, 8690/14 and Madera were the highest yielding in the Sacramento Valley; Madera and UC 337, in the San Joaquin Valley; and UC 337, in the rainfed areas. Yields, especially for later maturing barleys, were affected by moisture stress at Butte, Sutter, and Agronomy Progress Report No. 233 2 October 1992

UC Davis, sites that ere not irristod. thie year, and at Yolo, a rainfed site. Lodging was severe on some entries at each site except for the Tulare rainfed site. Entries most susceptible to lodging included Solum, CM 72, Seeo, Briggfl, UCD 89-4636, and Prato. Entries with the best lodging resistance included FMC 8146, N1{ DD Q!:Ul, QOO/H" UCD S7-10995, Sunbw 45S, \10 G03, FMC '7025-1, and APB 6B-2. Bushel weishts and kernel weights were very low, with average bushel weights ranging from 43.5 lhlbu at UC Davis to 51.4 lhlbu at the rainfed Tulare site, and average kernel weights ranging from 31.9 mg at the rainfed Yolo site to 41.6 mg at the rainfed Tulare site. Entries Fiesta, B1614, DA 588-10, 2B88 5133, DA 588-83, and PH 585-6 had high average bushel weights, while entries 8690114, UCD 87-7568, Seco and Solum had high average kernel weights. COMMON WHEAT The UC Regional common wheat nursery consisted of 40 entries, including 9 released cultivars and the remainder advanced breeding lines from 5 programs (University of California, Western Plant Breeders, Farmers Marketing Corporation, Arizona Plant Breeders, Pioneer Hi-Bred International). Twenty-nine of the entries were hard red spring wheats; 8, hard white spring; two, hard white winter; and one, hard red winter. Disease pressure was high for Septoria tritici blotch, BYD, and leaf rust at various sites. Septoria tritici blotch was severe on 14 entries; leafrust was severe on 21 entries (the most severe leafrust in many years; 14 entries were not affected), BYD was severe on 15 entries (2 entries had excellent resistance, Serra and the advanced line DA 989-46 from Western Plant Breeders), Stripe rust was observed in significant amounts at the San Luis Obispo Co. nursery; 8 entries were affected. Average yields ranged from 3050 lb/acre (1950-4120 lb/acre) at the rainfed Yolo site to 7350 lb/acre (4900-8850 lb/acre) at Imperial (Tables 11-21). Entries Pio. var. RBI0106 and UC 896 were the highest yielding in the Sacramento Valley; Klasic and FMC 5144, in the San Joaquin Valley; APB W10 8 and PH 988-131, in the Imperial Valley; and PH 986-61, PH 988-131, CONT BR 5702, and Yecora Rojo, at rainfed sites. In the three year period 1990-92, entries Pio. var. RBI0104 and Klasic were the highest yielding in the Sacramento Valley; Klasic, Serra, and FMC 5144, in the San Joaquin Valley; CONT BR 5702 and Klasic, in the Imperial Valley; and Yecora Rojo, in rainfed areas. Wheat yields were affected by moisture stress at Sutter and Butte, which were not irrigated, and at the rainfed Yolo site. Yields were reduced by a severe wild oat infestation and lodging at Kings. Lodging also was severe on some entries at the Kern site. Entries particularly susceptible to lodging included Serra, Tanori 87W, and PH 986 61. Fusarium crown and root rot was moderately severe and non-uniformly distributed at the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta site. Bushel weights and kernel weights were very low at some locations (Yolo, San Luis Obispo, and Merced) but average to above average at the other locations. Average bushel weights ranged from 56.6 lblbu at the rainfed Yolo site to 62.81blbu at the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta. Average kernel weights ranged from 29.0 mg at Yolo to 44.9 mg at the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta. Entries Klasic, Pio var RBJ0035P, and APB 89-1-13 had high average bushel weights, while entries APB W10-8, Yecora Rojo, PH 986-61, Baker, Klasic, CONT BR 5702, and APB H-8 had high average kernel weights. Grain protein levels varied widely among sites. Levels for six of the sites are given in Table 22, and averages range from 10.0% (12% moisture basis) at Butte to 14.1% at Kings, Entries DA 989-48, PH 989 188, CONT BR 5738, FMC BR 7076, Yecora Blanco 90W, and FMC BR 5678-1 had high average grain protein content. Agronomy Prograss Report No. 233 3 October 1992

,. Results of quality QnalY6 performed by the California Wheat Commission quality laboratory on &"c:un. BliUln.ples :.o the Butte Qnd Kinefl flite5 are given in Table 23. Excellent overall bread baking scores were given to 29 entrieb from the King5 5ite (where grain protein content ranged from 12.7-15.1%) while only one entry (CONT BR 5702) received as much as a satisfactory overall bread baking score from the llutt.. sit.. (.h..r.. grain. protein content rqnged from 8.7-11.7%). DURUM WHEAT The UC Regional durum wheat nursery consisted of 35 entries, including 10 released cultivars and the remainder advanced breeding lines from 5 programs (University ofcalifornia, Western Plant Breeders, Farmers Marketing Corporation, Arizona Plant Breeders, and Northrup-King Co.). Average yields ranged from 4910 lb/acre (2700-6410 lb/acre) at Kings to 7920 lb/acre (5300-9280 lb/acre) at Imperial (Tables 24-27). Westbred Turbo was the highest yielding at Imperial, while entries APB D03-5, UC 908, UC 909, and WPB 8004 were the highest yielding overall in 1992. Westbred Turbo was the highest yielding in the three-year period 1990-92. Grain yields at the Kings site were affected by a severe, nonuniform infestation of wild oats and lodging. In addition, portions of the durum nursery were stressed for moisture because of nonuniform irrigation. Lodging was severe on most entries at the Imperial site, but only on a few entries at UC Davis. Entries rated extremely susceptible to lodging included UC 909 and APB D03-4. Most of the other entries ranged from moderately susceptible to susceptible, with only CONT D5456 and UC 907 showing moderate resistance. Bushel weights were below average, ranging from 59.3 lb/bu at Kings to 6 lb/bu at UC Davis. Average kernel weights ranged from 42.5 mg at Kings to 48.8 mg at UC Davis. Entries Yavaros 79, UC 910, and APB D03-5 had high average bushel weights, while entries Nudura, UC 908 and UC 907 had high average kernel weights. Results of quality analyses of grain samples from the 1991 tests at UC Davis, Kings, and Imperial are given in Table 28. Average grain protein content ranged from 10.8-14.0% (12% moisture basis) at UC Davis to 12.2-15.6% at Imperial. Eleven entries had grain protein contents of 14% or more at Imperial. Entry Stier was the highest yielding in 1992, while Stier and Juan were the highest yielding in the three-year period 1990-92. Entry Juan has yielded 127% of Yolo wheat from 1990-92. Lodging was moderate at Imperial and severe at Kings, where a wild oat infestation also affected yields. Diseases, except for BYD, were not important on triticale in 1992. Average bushel weights ranged from 54.8 lb/bu at Imperial to 58.7 lb/bu at Sutter. Average kernel weights ranged from 36.9 mg at Imperial to 42.4 mg at Sutter. Entries Rhino "s" and EPB 16-1 had high average bushel weights, while Juan had high average kernel weight. Agronomy Progress Report No. 233 4 October 1992

OAT Average yielda of the oat grain te5t5 ranged from 860 lb/acre (130-1550 lb/acre) at Butte I to 2060 11>/al;1"e (1420-2530 Ib/acre) at Butte II (Table6 34-38). Yields were extremely poor. Drought stress was S<>v."" at the V olo rai.n ed. lgt. Qrwwy weed competition WaB very high at both Yolo and Butte I, while very severe early lodging affected yields at UC Davis. Only Ogle showed adequate resistance to lodging at UC Davis. Crown rust was severe on entries Montezuma, Kanota, and Swan at UC Davis. Entries Don, 75Q-036-83-1D, and Kanota were the highest yielding in 1992, while Swan and 75Q-036-83-1D were the highest yielding in the three-year period 1990-92. Average bushel weights ranged from 28.11blbu at UC Davis to 42.81blbu at Butte II. Average kernel weights ranged from 26.5 mg at the rainfed Yolo site to 28.9 mg at Butte II.
