Current situation and objectives EU vehicle regulations : Over 50 base Directives covering vehicle safety and environmental issues Plus over 100 amending Directives Some Directives over 35 years old Many duplicate UNECE Regulations Objective of the GSR Regulation: To simplify vehicle Regulations To refer to UNECE Regulations when possible 6
General Safety Regulations 661/2009 Proposal by the Commission in May 2008 will cover the following areas: Advanced Vehicle Safety New Requirements on Tyres. 7
General Safety Regulations 661/2009 New technical/performance requirements for tyres were proposed in four areas: 1. Tighter tyre road-noise emission requirements (vs. Dir.2001/43 and UNECE Reg117.00) 2. new rolling resistance requirements 3. the introduction of TPMS for passenger cars 4. new wet-grip requirements (as per UNECE Reg.117.01). 8
