CIRRUS SR2X Service Bulletin Number: Issued: Revised: June 26, 2012 SNS SUBJECT: 57-40 ATTACH FITTINGS - Lower Landing Gear Attach Bracket Torque 1. COMPLIANCE Mandatory: Cirrus Design considers this Service Bulletin to be MANDATORY. Accomplish this Service Bulletin at the next annual inspection. Compliance time begins upon receipt of this Service Bulletin. This Service Bulletin has been revised to add additional steps to accomplishment instructions. Operators who have successfully complied with the original release of this Service Bulletin, dated June 26, 2012, or subsequent revisions need take no further action. 2. EFFECTIVITY SR20 Serials 1878, 1886 thru 2135, 2140 thru 2147. SR22 Serials 2334, 2420, 2438 thru 3825, 3827 thru 3837. SR22T Serials 0001 thru 0284, 0286 thru 0297, 0299, 0300, 0303, 0304, 0306. 3. APPROVAL FAA approval has been obtained on all technical data in this Service Bulletin that affects type design. 4. PURPOSE On affected aircraft, bolt installation at the lower landing gear attach brackets may not meet torque requirements. This issue was caused during assembly at the factory where torque was adjusted for nut friction, but not bolt friction. This Service Bulletin provides for the re-torquing of the lower landing gear attach bracket bolts. 5. DESCRIPTION This Service Bulletin describes the re-torquing of the lower landing gear attach bracket bolts. 6. WARRANTY INFORMATION For aircraft under warranty at the issue date of this Service Bulletin, Cirrus Design will cover all parts and labor costs for this Service Bulletin if the work is accomplished within the Compliance time period and the work is performed at an authorized Cirrus Design Service Center. 7. MANPOWER REQUIREMENTS 2.0 man-hours. 8. OTHER PUBLICATIONS AFFECTED SR20 Airplane Maintenance Manual (p/n 12137-001) SR22 / SR22T Airplane Maintenance Manual (p/n 13773-001) 9. CIRRUS S ERVICE BULLETIN MODEL SR2X SERIES 11. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS A. Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose Dial Torque Wrench 0 to 300 in-lb Any Source Torque. Box-End Wrench, 1/2-inch - Any Source Torque. Oxy-Acetylene Torch - Any Source Fabricate tool. Welding Gloves - Any Source Fabricate tool. Protractor - Any Source Fabricate tool. Inspection Mirror - Any Source Inspect engagement. Flashlight - Any Source Inspect engagement. B. Remove key from ignition. C. Set BAT 1, BAT 2, and AVIONICS switches to OFF positions. D. Remove main landing gear fairings. (Refer to AMM 32-10) E. Raise airplane on jacks. (Refer to AMM 07-10) F. Remove strut clamp from LH and RH main landing gear. (Refer to AMM 32-10) (1) Remove nuts, washers, bolts, and clamp securing strut assembly to lower attach bracket. CAUTION: When removing strut from lower attach bracket, use caution to prevent damaging upper strut fitting and upper attach bracket. (2) If necessary, gently tap upper side of strut with a rubber mallet to move strut away from lower attach bracket. G. Fabricate tool. (See Figure 01) (1) Clamp wrench in vice so that 2.4 inches (6.1 cm) of box-end is exposed above top of vise. (2) Heat end of wrench with an oxy-acetylene torch. (3) Using welding gloves, bend wrench to obtain 75 angle. H. At lower landing gear attach bracket, determine torque requirement for each outboard bolt (total of 14 bolts, 7 per side). (See Figure 01) CAUTION: While nuts have somewhat consistent friction values, each bolt can have a very different drag. Each bolt/nut combination must be measured individually. Note: If attaching hardware is removed and replaced, observe stackup to facilitate reinstallation. (1) Loosen nut from bolt. (2) Hand tighten nut on bolt until locking feature is fully engaged (end of nut matches end of bolt). CAUTION: If nut can be turned by hand through the locking feature, the nut must be replaced. (3) While holding nut with wrench and using a torque wrench at bolt, turn bolt to measure total drag. (4) Add total drag to nominal torque 50-60 in-lb (5.6-6.7 Nm) and set wrench to that compensated value. Note: For example, if total drag equals 70 in-lb and nominal torque equals 50-60 in-lb, the compensated value would equal 120-130 in-lb. total drag + nominal torque = compensated value (5) Torque bolt to compensated value. I. Repeat torque procedure for remaining bolts. Page 2
CIRRUS S ERVICE BULLETIN MODEL SR2X SERIES J. Install strut clamp to LH and RH main landing gear. (Refer to AMM 32-10) (1) Position strut and clamp to lower attach bracket and secure with bolts, washers, and nuts. Torque to 160.0-190.0 in-lb (18.1-21.5 Nm). K. Lower airplane and remove jacks. (Refer to AMM 07-10) L. Install main landing gear fairings. (Refer to AMM 32-10) M. Complete airplane records by noting compliance with in Aircraft Logbook. Page 3
CIRRUS S ERVICE BULLETIN MODEL SR2X SERIES 2.4 inches (6.1 cm) 75 NOTE If attaching hardware is removed and replaced, observe stackup to facilitate reinstallation. Hand tighten nut on bolt until locking feature is fully engaged (end of nut matches end of bolt). Add total drag to nominal torque 50-60 in-lb (5.6-6.7 Nm) and set wrench to that compensated value. Clamp wrench in vice so that 2.4 inches (6.1 cm) of box-end is exposed above top of vise. Heat end of wrench with an oxy-acetylene torch. Using welding gloves, bend wrench to obtain 75 angle.
