1 Route information 1.1 History The Corris Railway was the first narrow-gauge railway to be opened in Mid-Wales, and was built to the unusual track Gauge of 2 feet 3 inches. It operated for eighty nine years, until it was closed by British Railways in 1948. The Corris started out serving the slate quarries at the head of the Dulas Valley transporting the slate to the quays on the River Dovey near Derwenlas, and from the 1870's also carrying passengers. In it's heyday in the 1890's it carried around 80,000 passengers a year, when, coupled with the railways own bus services, it transported early tourists onwards to Lake Tallyn and the mountains of Cadair Idris. After it's closure, the line was soon dismantled, with the line being lifted and the trackbed left to return to nature, and it's remaining buildings put to other uses. Unlike the other Welsh narrow gauge lines it did not look like a likely prospect for revival. In 1967 The Corris Railway Society was formed and set out to open a museum in the surviving Corris Station Complex, which was officially opened in 1970. In 1971 a short section of track was laid adjacent to the museum. In 1981 the society purchased the engine shed and yard at Maspoeth, and by 1984 the line was re-opened from Corris to Maspoeth. It wasn't to be until 1996 when the first steam train would re-run on the line though, when Loco no.4 would be loaned by the Talyllyn Railway. The current engine, the No.7 is a new-build engine based on the Kerr Stuart "Tattoo" class locomotive similar to the Talyllyn Railway engine No.4 "Edward Thomas", which itself used to run on the Corris line. The Engine was started officially on 1st February 1995 and entered service in 2005. During the nine years since then number 7 has worked the vast majority of passenger services on the revived section of the Railway between Corris Station and Maespoeth Junction, including Santa Trains, and private charters. In 2011 it worked successfully as a guest engine on the neighbouring line the Talyllyn. 1.2 The Route. The route for Train Simulator Creates the existing track from Corris to Maspoeth, and also the proposed extension from Maspoeth onwards to Tan-Y-Coed, along with new proposed station buildings Page 3
