VEHICLE CONSIDERATIONS Befre yu get started, cnsider the fllwing pints regarding yur vehicle type. These will help yu identify the best munting lcatin fr the DriveCam Unit and may save yu the truble f having t remve and remunt the unit. The DriveCam Unit needs t be munted in a lcatin that prvides an unbstructed view f the interir and exterir (frnt) f the vehicle. The rear-facing camera shuld capture an internal view frm the utside shulder f the driver t the utside shulder f a frnt seat passenger. The frward-facing camera shuld capture a brad view f everything in frnt f the vehicle, beginning as clse t the frnt f the vehicle withut cutting ff the hrizn. Sedans, Pickups, and Light-Duty Trucks Smaller vehicles such as these typically have a traditinal rear-view mirrr. The DriveCam Unit shuld be munted s that it is visible just belw the rear-view mirrr when the mirrr is adjusted t its lwest psitin (see figure n the fllwing page). Keep in mind that the mirrr typically pivts n tw pints ne n the glass and ne n the back f the mirrr. Buses and Large Trucks Larger vehicles ften have nn-standard windshields and mirrrs. In these cases, the DriveCam Unit is usually munted as lw n the windshield as pssible but just abve a hrizntal line drawn frm the tp f the head f the tallest drivers when seated behind the wheel. Installers tend t place these units t high n the windshield, which keeps the driver ut f view, causes a lss f visin in the frnt f the vehicle, and pushes the DriveCam s accelermeters farther away frm the vehicle s center f mass. INSTALLATION PROCEDURES ~ ~ ~ We recmmend that yu carefully plan and test the installatin befre making final cnnectins within the vehicle. Read thrugh the fllwing instructins carefully t ensure prper functin f the DriveCam Unit. NOTE: The fllwing installatin prcedures apply directly t mst sedans, pickups, and light-duty trucks. Hwever, they are similar enugh t be used fr all vehicle installatins. Be sure t fllw the guidelines utlined abve. INSTALLING THE BRACKET The air temperature must be greater than 50 F fr the bracket adhesive t bnd securely t the windshield. A large twel saked with very warm water and placed n the exterir f the windshield ver the munting psitin can be used fr cld weather installatins. Using the vehicle s defrster can als be effective. Otherwise, perfrm the installatin in a heated garage. DRC200 2005-07-21 Page 2 DriveCam Unit Installatin Instructins
Step 1 Park the vehicle n a flat, level surface. Step 2 Temprarily place the DriveCam Unit inside the munting bracket. Step 3 Using the alchl wipe (prvided), THOROUGHLY CLEAN AND DRY the area where yu plan t munt the unit. CAUTION: This step is critical t prevent the unit frm falling ff at a later date. Step 4 Temprarily psitin the assembly (bracket and unit) behind the rearview mirrr. CAUTION: D nt peel the backing frm the adhesive strip until instructed t d s. Imprtant Things t Cnsider Make sure the unit des nt interfere with the driver s primary field f visin. Make sure the lens has a clear view f the interir and exterir f the vehicle. Be aware f ptential bstructins such as: windshield wipers, windw tint, sun visrs, circulatin fans, and the rear-view mirrr when it is adjusted t its lwest psitin. Make sure the driver has a clear view f the status lights n the unit. Psitin the unit s the lens is as clse t the centerline f the vehicle while still leaving rm (abut 1¼ inch n the left side f the bracket) t insert the Trx wrench in the munting screw arund the rearview mirrr munting pst (failure t d s will require remving the entire bracket in rder t adjust r service the camera). If yu are perfrming multiple installatins, test the first ne befre installing the thers. This invlves triggering the DriveCam Unit t recrd an event and then reviewing the event in HindSight sftware. Lk fr ptential bstructins t the frward and rear-facing cameras. Once yu are certain that the crrect munting lcatin has been selected, yu can cntinue installing the remainder f yur DriveCam Units. Step 5 Mark the psitin f the assembly n the glass with a felt-tip marker. Step 6 Remve the DriveCam Unit frm the munting bracket. Step 7 Make sure the guide marks n the glass are level befre prceeding. Step 8 Check the fit f the munting bracket against the windshield. If the windshield is curved, yu may have t gently shape (bend) the bracket s it will lie flush against the windshield. CAUTION: The adhesive is very sticky. Once it is n, it will nt easily cme ff. Step 9 Remve the backing frm the adhesive side f the munting bracket. CAUTION: Verify the rientatin f the munting bracket. The bracket has a plastic disk n each side. The larger disk must be n the left as seen frm inside the vehicle lking ut. Step 10 Place nly the tp edge f the munting bracket against the windshield and make sure it is level befre prceeding. Step 11 When yu are sure that the munting bracket is psitined crrectly, press it firmly against the windshield starting at the tp and pressing the sides dwnward. CAUTION: D nt apply excessive pressure as the windshield may break. Step 12 Check frm utside the vehicle t make sure there are n large air bubbles under the munting bracket. If necessary, use a screwdriver handle t (carefully) apply additinal pressure t the munting bracket and remve any large air bubbles. Use a small pin t create an escape path fr the air if the prblem is persistent. DRC200 2005-07-21 Page 4 DriveCam Unit Installatin Instructins
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS The DriveCam Unit prvides uninterrupted service when cnnected t a cntinuus 12-vlt pwer surce frm the vehicle. If yu are planning t install a DriveCam Illuminatr (ptinal device) in yur vehicle, yu may want t rute its wiring at this time as well. Step 2 Cnnect the DriveCam pwer crd t a cntinuus 12-vlt pwer surce. Wire Splice Optin The wire splice clips (prvided) allw yu t easily tap int existing wiring. Use a vltmeter r wiring diagram t lcate suitable pwer and grund wires. Rute the wiring thrugh the clips, press the metal cnnectr int the wires, snap the clip clsed, and wrap in electrical tape. Fuse Tap Optin Cnnect the unit s red lead t the psitive (cntinuus) pwer surce and the black lead t negative (r t a clean grund) using the apprpriate fuse taps (available at mst aut parts stres). This ptin is similar t hw after market accessries are pwered in mst vehicles but it des nt prvide evidence f tampering a driver culd discnnect and re-cnnect the DriveCam and then claim that the device was faulty. NOTE: Use this ptin nly if risk f tampering is lw r yu are willing t track warning events captured if pwer is discnnected and re-cnnected. Warning events are listed in HindSight 20/20 sftware. Refer t the User s Guide fr mre infrmatin. Custm Wiring Optins Cnnect pwer and grund via methds that best fit yur requirements. Custmers ccasinally slder cnnectins, use crimp cnnectrs, etc. Pwer cnnectins in mtr caches are usually made using crimped ring terminals t the pwer psts in the vehicle s maintenance panel. If yur vehicle has interir lights near the rearview mirrr r visrs, yu can cnnect t that pwer surce as lng as it is cntinuus (cnfirm that pwer is cntinuus with drs clsed, key ut f the ignitin and after 5 minutes have elapsed). Step 3 Cil any excess crd and secure it with plastic ties r tape in a safe lcatin under the dashbard, headliner, maintenance panel, etc. DRC200 2005-07-21 Page 5 DriveCam Unit Installatin Instructins
