VIRGINIA INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY ACES SET FOR MICHELIN GT CHALLENGE Top Manufacturers Bring Their Best to VIR

GT CATEGORIES take center stage at VIR 2

GOING FOR THE WIN The drivers, teams and production based cars of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans (GTLM) and (GTD) classes take center stage for the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR, the only GT exclusive race of the 2016 WeatherTech Championship. Featuring the powerful factory teams from BMW Team RLL, Corvette Racing, Ford Chip Ganassi Racing and Porsche North America (2015 VIR winners) plus the factory linked Risi Competizione Ferrari (2013-2014 VIR winners), the GTLM class is regarded as one of the premier classes in international motorsport. Meanwhile, the top Audi, BMW, Dodge Viper, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche entries will battle out the 2 hour 40-minute race with Pro Am driver combinations and GTD Championship leaders, Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan from Scuderia Corsa Ferrari. Victories at Le Mans The prowess of the WeatherTech Championship GTLM teams was reinforced at the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours race as IMSA teams swept the GTE-Pro class podium. The victory followed Corvette Racing s 2015 win, its eighth at Le Mans. Ford CGR s Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller (joined by Sebastien Bourdais) took the win in Ford s historic return to Le Mans. Risi Competizione Ferrari s Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander (with Matteo Malucelli) finished second and the Ford CGR of Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook (with Scott Dixon) third. On the (GTD) side, it was the U.S. based Scuderia Corsa, the 2015 WeatherTech Championship GTD title holders taking the GTE-Am win at Le Mans. Ford Arrives The Michelin GT Challenge marks the VIR debut for the stunning new Ford GTs. Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook have already scored three GTLM wins; Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen International and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. This isn t the first VIR dance for the veteran Mueller. Back when they first announced that we would be racing at VIR, everyone wondered what to expect, said Mueller. The first time at VIR, I was like, oh man, that is a good track. It s one of my favorites and they did a great job improving the runoffs and lining the track. I must confess that I like it even more without the Oak Tree. I couldn t see the exit from the corner before. It is great to race for the overall win. We were testing here at VIR earlier this year to get ready for Le Mans. We should be well prepared. Flying High In contrast, this is the first VIR visit for Spain s Alex Riberas of the Alex Job Racing Porsche GTD team. He knows the VIR circuit only by reputation and simulations. In his first year racing in the U.S., Riberas has already taken the GTD class poles at Sebring International Raceway, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and most recently Road America. I heard you jump a lot and put wheels in the air so it will be a good place for Instagram, laughs Riberas. Sims vs. Reality Working on the simulators doesn t show you the bumps, said Riberas. I think sometimes people are over-dependent on the sims. It helps to learn the layout of the track, but you have to get a feel of the real track. Being a GT only race will mean less traffic, so we can drive more looking in front and less watching rearwards. It may also mean less chances of a yellow caution. Home Game One driver who already feels right at home at VIR is Corvette Racing s Tommy Milner. VIR is my home track, says Milner, who lives in Middleburg, Virginia. It s a lot of fun to race at VIR for the overall win. He and co-driver Oliver Gavin scored the victory here in 2012, a win that clinched that season s respective championships for the drivers, the Corvette Racing team and Chevrolet. Milner and Gavin arrive at VIR leading the 2016 WeatherTech Championship GTLM class with four wins; Daytona, Sebring, Lime Rock and Road America. The latter two victories are the 100th and 101st in the storied history of Corvette Racing. With BMW and Ferrari both showing considerable pace, the 2016 Long Beach winning and defending VIR champion Porsche team, resurgent after a mid-season slump, and a title battle featuring a historic Corvette v. Ford championship shoot-out, the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR is now on center stage. VIR is a great track and the competition is so incredibly tight that it should be a great race, said Milner. 3

70 YEARS The world of international sports car racing is blessed with nearly two dozen manufacturers, both old and new, looking to develop technologies or polish their brands in competition. Only a few successfully do both long term; a list that often starts with Porsche. Through almost seven decades of competition, up markets and downturns, generations of managements and corporate structures, Porsche has always been Porsche. Porsche s success is not merely a remnant of its storied past. Overall race victories at Le Mans in 2015 and 2016 (its record 17th and 18th), the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship in both LMP1 (Prototype) and GTE-Pro (GTLM equivalent) and the 2015 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTLM manufacturer, team and driver titles, are powerful examples of its continued prowess. Great Expectations The name Porsche carries an expectation, said Steffen Hoellwarth, program manager for Porsche s IMSA SportsCar Championship. Porsche buyers buy more than a vehicle. They acquire a package, a vehicle with a name and image, a position in the marketplace and a remarkable history in competition. Hoellwarth, who started as an intern in the Porsche factory, attributes much of Porsche s success to the company s culture. I think it is an attitude, he said. We are always trying to improve. We never give up, no matter what happens and that attitude is not only at our factory teams, but also with customers. We question ourselves every day. We take a different approach. We always ask what we can do to improve? While some manufacturers and suppliers view motorsports as primarily a marketing and image building program, Porsche takes a deeper, more comprehensive approach. Of course, marketing is part of our program and we work hard to communicate our success, but our motorsports program is sustainable because it is led by our R&D department not simply by marketing. 4

PORSCHE POWER Riding the GT Cycle Production based, GT race cars typically have a three to five year life cycle. It is difficult to accelerate that pace as corresponding new production based cars must be created and homologated in a business where $100 million dollars is considered the equivalent of a single poker chip. New cars are introduced. Teams work to establish reliability, extract maximum performance, and gain early success. As time goes on, the rate of improvement slows as the car reaches a development point where only small gains are possible. In mid-term, a new car is typically in final design to pick up where the old car left off and reach the next level when it debuts. This year, the BMW M6 GTLM, the Ferrari 488 GTE and the Ford GT are all in their first seasons of WeatherTech Championship GTLM competition and were designed to the 2016 rules. Porsche and Corvette currently race updated versions of their 2014 models. What s Next? There is only one topic off-limits with Hoellwarth, the next Porsche 911 racer, scheduled to make its WeatherTech Championship competition debut at the 2017 Rolex 24 At Daytona next January. As one would expect, the specifics of the car have drawn considerable speculation by Porsche enthusiasts, fans, media and competitors. I m sorry, but I cannot discuss the new car, he says politely. It is known that the car is already testing in Europe as Porsche works to establish consistency, reliability and optimize performance. The goal is for its newest entry to win the first race, a task exceedingly difficult in the WeatherTech Championship where the first two races are the longest of the season, the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the rugged Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The current Porsche 911 RSR won both in its first season, 2014. Finish Strong However, before the new car appears next January, there is the matter of closing out the 2016 season in a fashion similar to 2015. The Porsche North America team reeled off victories at Road America, here at VIR and with a stunning overall race win in the wet season finale at Road Atlanta s Petit Le Mans, clinching the 2015 IMSA GTLM Manufacturer, Team and Driver Championships. They would like to finish the season and the current car s cycle on a similar high note. The competition here is very strong, perhaps the best in the world of sports car racing, said Hoellwarth. You have (GTLM) factory teams, factory drivers, and they are all very close. Leapfrog And, if momentarily, the competition believes they have Porsche in their sights, two of Hoellwarth s soft spoken comments echo in the ears of the Porsche faithful and its competitors; Porsche s motorsports program is led by R&D and what we can do to improve? That relentless combination makes Porsche the benchmark for the category on the track and with its production vehicles. And, the impending debut of the newest Porsche may very well kick-off the next round of GTLM leapfrog. 5

Gavin and Corvette Racing co-driver Tommy Milner won the race at Road America to claim some fresh hardware. The win, their fourth of the season, was what Gavin called a massive step toward the 2016 WeatherTech Championship GTLM driver s championship. There are several teams and drivers looking to steal that trophy before season s end. Vipers Live! While parent company FCA has announced that it is ending production of the Dodge Viper, that doesn t mean that Jeroen Bleekemolen and Ben Keating have stopped producing WeatherTech Championship success for Viper on track as evidenced by the their GTD win at Road America. They currently stand second in the 2016 Driver s Championship trailing only Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan. #100 Joins the Party BMW Team RLL s John Edwards and Lucas Luhr survived the dramatic closing laps at Road America to claim their first podium finish of the 2016 season. The third place finish for the No.100 BMW means that all 10 GTLM class entries have been on the podium at least once through their first eight races. 6

S After the final caution phase, it would have been almost impossible to have fitted a piece of paper between the Ford, the Ferrari and me. PORSCHE RACER NICK TANDY TALKS ABOUT THE DRAMATIC RACE AT ROAD AMERICA Catch a Ride Street models from all five GTLM manufacturers; BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford and Porsche will be featured in a Michelin GT Challenge display and hot lap program on the Patriot Course here at VIR. Pro drivers from Michelin, BMW and Porsche will provide rides to fans that have scored a ride ticket through a media promotion, car corral, VIP or Michelin VIR display opportunity. Believe This Fans on site, online, watching FOX Sports or listening to IMSA Radio, weren t the only ones stunned by the final five minutes of the Road America race. Corvette Racing driver Oliver Gavin said the team was in disbelief when the No. 4 Corvette won after restarting in fifth place with just three laps remaining. While Gavin confessed that he was speechless, media veterans know that term would never apply to energetic program manager Doug Fehan. FAST BUT SLOW Eye raising as it may seem, until this year it was not unusual for pole winners to lobby for a Balance of Performance gain by claiming that they are much slower than the competition on the straightaways. The use of new data loggers has reduced that ritual, but AJR Porsche s Alex Riberas seemed headed that way at Road America but quickly explained that his team had added downforce for the corners at the expense of straight-line speed.
