Indicator Posts Indicator posts are controls, extending aboveground, for operating underground sprinkler system valves. As an important feature of their design, a target or indicator, visible through an opening in the post, shows whether the valve is open or shut. The indicator post generally consists of a cast iron barrel, an extension flange which allows the height of the barrel to be regulated, and a wrought iron or mild steel stem which operates the underground valve and simultaneously moves the target. A telescoping union permits turning the stem from a constant height. Indicator posts are available for installation on non-rising stem gate valves. Unless otherwise specified, indicator posts are Approved for use on 4 through 14 in. NPS non-rising stem gate valves with an indicator post flange. In all new fire protection system installations, buried valves must open in a counterclockwise direction regardless of the direction the valves of the public water system open. An exception to this is when all other buried valves in a plant yard open in a clockwise direction. Then all new valves should open clockwise also. When some buried valves in a system open one way and some the other, all new valves should open counterclockwise. There may be exceptions to this when most valves in an extensive yard system open clockwise. In such cases, FM Global should be consulted regarding the proper direction of opening. Single Check Valves Single check valves are used in fire protection systems to allow waterflow in one direction only.
