ATTENTION: Proper Installation requires use of #VAS4Z-15A866-C TOOL KIT Condition No Power Sensors do not detect objects No sound from speaker Zone 1 Constant Zone 2 Constant Zone 3 Constant Troubleshooting Tips For additional assistance call 888-324-6678 Cause /Action Check ground and power connection Check if the proper power source is tapped (reverse wire) Speaker wire plugged in and is in the Hi or Lo Setting Control Module not working properly Speaker not working properly Check for objects within 7 of vehicle Sensors mounted too low or improper sleeve used Testing surface too rough, such as gravel or snow Unplug one sensor to isolate the false signal s source as far as which sensor is causing the false signal 1 22 You may also wish to have on hand: 1) Panel tool (Optional - for situations requiring plastic, inner panels to be removed) 2) 3/8 Slit Loom (use slit loom to shroud sensor wires for a more factory appearance) 3) Wire pulling tool (for routing wires from vehicle s underside through to passenger compartment) 4) Semi-circular metal file (for smoothing hole edges when necessary)- DO NOT use fingers to test holes for burrs or smoothness. EDGES ARE SHARP!!! Your Park Assist system s Audible Warning Zones Your system reads ultrasonic signals that are projected from sensors mounted in your vehicle s bumper. As the signals Echo off of objects in the detection field, the control unit s microprocessor translates them into audible warning tones or sounds inside the vehicle which will alert the driver (an optional visual indicator is also available). Your Park Assist system will detect three distinct Zones, which correspond with your vehicle s distance to an object. The moment you engage your reverse, the system performs a self check indicated by tones. The self check function and self check tones have multiple purposes: One tone notification- the system is OK and is scanning for objects in the detection field. If any tone continues after the vehicle is started, there maybe be an object within your 3 scanning ranges, or vehicle needs to be serviced. 3 20

Installation Procedure Overview Recap 1) Check bumper for sensor clearance and make measurements. 2) Use angle sleeve selector to determine if bumper suits the install specs and choose correct indicated sensor sleeves. 3) Drill holes in selected locations. Be sure to use Zinc Galvanizer on metal bumpers. 4) Locate and tap into Reverse 12v and Ground source for system. 5) Run the sensor wires into vehicle in the general area of step 4. 6) Mount Speaker and LED if Applicable and run wires to area of step 5. 7) Mount Control Module and secure excess wiring. 8) Test system to verify correct hookup. System Features Your Park Assist system Features an all new Learning Mode that allows the system to adapt to fixed objects on the vehicle that would normally render the system inoperable. This feature takes objects like spare tires or similar and tunes it out while still being to have normal operation. Normally Spare Tires for instance might be detected and cause the system to always return a solid tone because of its detection. This allows the system to see the Spare Tire as part of the system and tune it out while still maintaining proper operation. This mode is accessed by the cycling of reverse gear. The programming mode access Is 5 cycles of the system off and on leaving it on when you reach the 5th cycle, or: On, (one), Off, On, (two), Off, On, Off, On, Off, On which makes 5. At this point the system would have Learned an object which is impeding the sensor. NOTE, allow at least one second between each press of the switch. 19 Color Coordinated Sensors Procedure The sensors and sleeves are paintable and can be painted with most automotive grade paint. For Best results follow our recommended painting procedure: Step 1: Sand the Sleeves and Sensors with 600 to 800 grit sand paper to rough the surface. Step 2: Spray an automotive grade primer on the sensors and sleeves (separately) make sure it is compatible with your color coat. Step 3: Spray an automotive grade paint onto sensors in light layers and finish with clear coat. Possible outlets for paint are through a body shop, touch up specialist, www.paintscratch.com or www.etouchup.com. Also, many auto parts stores may carry touch-up paint by Duplicolor. 4 #8 Installation Guide : Testing the Installation The key to successful testing starts with the right test environment. The ideal test environment should be: 1) Outside on Flat / Level ground. 2) Free from obstructions 7 feet from the rear of the vehicle. 3) Free from obstructions to the sides of the bumper. 4) Free from objects laying on the ground in the area described above. disconnected sensor. System Sensor Pattern Options Immediately after power up you will hear one quick beep. If there are no obstructions behind the vehicle (within 7 feet), and no obstructions on the ground, the speaker should now be silent. Test the unit with the engine OFF!!! L&R dip off: only CL&CR ports are functional L&R on, and at 3 of detection L&R dip on and at 6 of detection 1) Set the vehicles Emergency Brake and block the tires whenever possible. 2) Turn the vehicles ignition key to the ON position (but do not start engine). 3) Select Reverse Gear. You should hear one beep, indicating you have engaged reverse gear, and the system is scanning for objects in the detection field. If it detects that a sensor is disconnected it will beep one additional beep for each disconnected sensor. 4) Roll down the windows, so you can hear the speaker from outside the vehicle (set to Hi volume if desired). 17 6

System Sensor Configuration Options 2 Sensor Install Install sensors between 12 and 18 from the center of the bumper. Between 18 and 30 from the ground. Ports labeled CL and CR will be used for a 2 sensor hookup. Switch set to 2 sensor configuration. 4 Sensor Install Install sensors between 12 to 18 from center of the bumper for the center sensors, and 6 to 12 from the outer edge of bumper for the outer sensors. Distance from ground will be 18 to 30. Ports labeled CL and CR will be used for the center sensors and L and R will be used for the outer sensors. Switch set to desired configuration. (See p.6) 5 For testing purposes, you may wish to hold a piece of flat, reflective material in your hand (such as medium sized piece of cardboard). From a distance of about 8 feet, slowly begin walking toward the vehicle, holding the reflector perpendicular to the bumper. *At approximately 6 or 7 feet, the system should begin to beep slowly, indicating that you have been detected in Zone 1. Continue slowly approaching the bumper, at a distance of approximately 4 feet from the vehicle, the beeping will quicken to three times per second, indicating you have been detected in Zone 2. As you approach 2 feet from the rear bumper, the warning tone will turn solid, indicating you have been detected in Zone 3. * When testing, do not start vehicle, reverse may be selected with key in and turned to the on position without car running. Depending on model being tested, Zone 1 Range of 7 feet. 18 Zone3 Zone2 Zone1 #1 Installation Procedures : Determining Sensor Position Before You Begin: Inspect behind the bumper (fig. A.) in the approximate mounting area to check for any possible obstructions. For example check for 5 m.p.h. collision struts or hardened metal braces that could prohibit drilling. A proper installation will take into consideration two factors: 1) Placement: height and distance either side of bumper center. 2) Angle: accurate detection depends on the correct sensor angle. The sensor needs 1 clearance space behind the bumper to be fully inserted. Some bumpers have an outside cover or fascia and a metal backing. You may have to drill through both layers to insure you have enough clearance in order to fit sensors. Other bumpers require some removal of foam backing. CAUTION: Be Careful of hot exhaust parts and/or sharp edges under bumper!!! #7 Installation Guide : Mounting the Control Module You will want to mount the control module behind one of vehicle s body panels. Start by locating and cleaning a suitable location using the provided alcohol swab. Then plug in all the wires and peel backing of Velcro liner to mount to your location. Then finish by securing any loose and/or excess wiring. Before re-assembling any panels that might have been removed from the vehicle, proceed to next step. Installation is Complete. See Pgs 17-22 to test the installation, product overview, and trouble shooting tips. 7 16

#5 Installation Guide : Running the sensor wires into vehicle Now that the location for the control module and reverse wire have been located, you will need to run the sensor wires to that side of the vehicle to keep the whole installation in the same location. Determine where the sensor wires will enter into the passenger compartment. Many vehicles will have factory grommets to allow routing of wires from the outside to the inside of the vehicle. If you are drilling a hole through a metal body panel to route your sensor wires into the passenger compartment, be sure to coat the holes edges with Zinc Galvanizer (part no. EMZ) or Motor Craft PM- 13A Rust Inhibitor. Finish by fitting the hole with a rubber grommet, or by using automotive grade silicone to prevent moisture from entering the vehicle. #6 Installation Guide : The Piezo Speaker and LED The speaker has 3 adjustment positions: Hi, Low and Off. Therefore you need to mount the unit where it can be easily accessed for adjustment. Also keep in mind where you routed the sensor wires in the previous step. You will want to keep the speaker and or LED on the same side of the vehicle. Route the plugs for both the speaker and LED (if used) to the area where you routed the sensor wires. Make sure that they will not be pinched by any panels or moving parts. Clean the mounting area with the supplied alcohol pad, remove the backing strip from the Velcro and firmly press the speaker into place. Attach the LED the same way, making sure it is in view through the rear-view mirror, or over the shoulder of the driver. Do not mount speaker or LED in direct sunlight. 15 Determine the center of your bumper and mark the center using a grease pencil. From the center of the bumper measure outward to the location where you plan to mount your sensors. Mark the location with your grease pencil as shown in Fig. B. Ideal Range From Bumper Center: 12 to 18 and sensors should be mounted NO LOWER THAN 18 from the ground and NO HIGHER THAN 30. Using a grease pencil, mark the height for the sensors (fig. C). Do not mount above exhaust pipe!!! 8 #4 Installation Guide : Connect the Power Harness To Connect the Power Harness: Never use a test light to probe wires!!! Angle Gauge Overview There are 2 methods of quickly and easily locating the reverse light power wire: 1) The first method is to actually remove the tail light housing from the vehicle. On many vehicles, this can be done by simply removing 2 to 3 screws or bolts, and using light finger pressure. Once the tail light housing is removed, examine where the wires plug in to the back of the light housing. You should be able to easily locate the reverse light power wire, verifying it with a 12 volt multi-meter. 2) The second method also involves the use of a 12 volt multi-meter. Probe the appropriate wiring harness which heads toward the reverse light connector of the, looking for the wire which carries 12 volts when reverse gear is engaged, and no voltage when reverse gear is disengaged. 13 10

#2 Installation Procedures : Choosing your Angle Sleeve The Angle Gauge (part no. EMAG) makes installation of the Park Assist system a snap! Before starting, make certain the vehicle is parked on flat and level ground and the parking break is set. Next, make sure the swing-arm on the EMAG is able to move freely by loosening the bolt. After you have determined where your sensor holes will be drilled and have marked the spot with a grease pencil, place the Angle Gauge flat against the surface of the bumper with the arrow pointed toward the dot you made (see illustration). Make sure the edge of the Angle Gauge with the arrow is perpendicular to the face of the bumper to obtain accurate results. The Angle Gauge will automatically and correctly determine which sensor sleeve (F0, F1, F2, or F3) you will need. If your reading falls directly on a line, select the next sensor sleeve to the right of the division line. If mounting height is 26 or more, you should be able to use an angle sleeve of one less than indicated. Once you have located the reverse light power wire, use pliers to connect the RED wire from the unit s power harness using the provided 3M Scotch-Lock connector. Make sure you have a solid connection. A poor quality connection for power or ground may cause intermittent inoperability. Connect the black, ground wire from the unit s wiring harness to the vehicle s ground wire at reverse bulb or reverse bulb harness, using the provided connector. DO NOT CONTINUE TO NEXT STEP IF ARM FALLS BEYOND THE LAST LINE ON THE MARKER! This is an indicator that the placement is too steep to accommodate proper function of the system. Re-evaluate placement and find area within tolerance of angle selector 9 14 #3 Installation Guide : Drilling Holes and Installing Sensors The Hole Saw tool is specifically designed for cutting through automotive bumper material, whether chrome-steel, plastic, or a combination of both. The sensor port created by the EMHS572 matches the sensor shaft with great precision. Always create a dimple in the bumper prior to drilling to prevent slippage of the cutting tool. Holes created in metal bumpers may have sharp burrs or edges which can abrade your sensor wires. Remove burrs (if any) with a semi-circular metal file. Use care not to oversize sensor holes if filing. DO NOT use fingers to test holes for burrs or smoothness. EDGES ARE SHARP!!! Warnings / Precautions: Please consult with EchoMaster or an authorized dealer before installing on a vehicle with any rear mounted external appliances, like spare tires, bike racks or other devices which may interfere with the Park Assist system s detection area and cause false detection. Special installation instructions, procedures or warnings may apply. Step 1: The Sensor Holes Using the 28 mm hole saw (part no. EMHS572), cut the sensor holes. Always wear approved safety glasses when drilling. Caution should be used when cutting holes, as the Hole Saw, metal shavings and token shaped piece where hole is created will be very hot, and may have sharp edges. When drilling bumpers, only use the company approved cutting tool (part no. EMHS572). If drilling a metal bumper, coat edges of holes with Zinc Galvanizer (part no. EMZ) or Motor Craft PM-13A Rust Inhibitor and allow a few minutes to dry. Step 2: Mount Sensor Start by inserting the pre-selected sensor sleeve into bumper making sure the sleeve indicator marking faces up. Then insert sensor into sleeve with the up marking facing up. (sensor can only be inserted one way into sleeve. If sleeve is not in the correct position the sensor will not slide into place when the up marking is facing up.) The sensor wires will be covered in a later step. 11 12
