Homecoming Soap Box Derby 2014 The Homecoming Soap Box Derby is now sponsored annually by Greek Affairs. The purpose of the event is to promote school spirit and unity among the many organized groups that comprise Texas State University. The teams participating in this event build soapbox derby cars and compete for trophies and points toward the highly coveted Homecoming Spark Award. The following rules and regulations are designed to provide uniformity of cars for a safe and exciting race. 1) Width- Overall width of the car cannot exceed 40 inches (102 cm), wheel to wheel. 2) Length- Overall length cannot exceed 84 inches (213 cm). 3) Wheels and Axlea. The wheels may not be less than 7 inches (18 cm) in diameter (top to bottom). b. The wheels must not exceed 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter. c. The car must run on four wheels. Two front and two rear, as an automobile. d. The brakes on the car must be in working order. It is suggested that the nose of the car be built to with stand the impact of several hay bales that will be at the bottom of the hill. Greek Affairs and the Environmental Health, Safety, & Risk Management Department will have the right to disqualify any car which brakes are not adequate to stop the car. e. The steering on the car must be functional. f. An approved motorcycle helmet is required for the driver(s). *NOTE: A full effort will be made to remove cars along the soapbox route. Texas State University, its agents, or agencies, whoever acts as sponsors of the Soap Box Derby, shall not be held liable for accidents or injuries resulting from participation in the Soap Box Derby. All drivers must be 18 years or older and must sign the event participation form. A driver who does not sign the participation form will not be eligible for competition. ID s will be checked before the race. Each organization will be required to sign a liability waiver to this effect. 4) Judging- There will be three divisions in the Soap Box Derby: a. Small Group b. Mid-Size Group c. Large Group 5) All participants must check in two hours prior to start of derby to assess that car meets all designated specs and requirements. Greek Affairs Soap Box Derby Ramp Dimensions
Organization: Size: Driver: Driver and/or organization president MUST BE PRESENT at all inspection days. Inspections are mandatory in order to resolve any safety issues prior to the day of the event. A final inspection of the soap box car will take place on the day of the event prior to the start of the races. Check-in for participants will begin at 1:00 pm, two hours prior to the start of the races. Drivers will receive further instructions regarding day of preparations at the second inspection day including their check-in time and location, scheduled race time and any last minute details. Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement (This must be completed by each participant) 1. In consideration for receiving permission to participate in Soapbox Derby, I release, waive, discharge and covenant not to sue the Board of Regents, Texas State University System; the State of Texas, their officers, servants, agents, or employees (hereinafter referred to as Releases) from any and all liability, claims, demands, actions and causes of action whatsoever arising out of or related to any loss, damage, or injury, including death, that may be sustained by me, or to any property belonging to me, whether caused by the negligence of the releasees or otherwise, while participating in such activity, or while in, on or upon the premises where the activity is being conducted. 2. I am fully aware of risks and hazards connected with the activity, and I elect to voluntarily participate in the activity, and to engage in such activity knowing that the activity may be hazardous to me and my property. I voluntarily assume full responsibility for any risks of loss, property damage or personal injury, including death, that may be sustained by me, or any loss or damage to property owned by me, as a result of being engaged in such an activity, whether caused by the negligence of releasees or otherwise. 3. I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless the releasees from any loss, liability, damage or costs, including court cost and attorney fees, that they may incur due to my participation in the activity, whether caused by negligence of releasees or otherwise. 4. It is my express intent that this Release and Hold Harmless Agreement shall bind the members of my family and spouse, if I am alive, and my heirs assigns and personal representative, if I am deceased, and shall be deemed as a release, waiver, discharge, and covenant not to sue the above named releasees. I further agree that this Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas. In signing this release, I acknowledge and represent that I have read the above Waiver and Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement, understand it and sign it voluntarily as my own free act and deed; no oral presentations, statements, or inducements, apart from the foregoing written agreement, have been made; I am at least eighteen (18) years of age and fully competent; and I execute this Release for full, adequate and complete consideration fully intending to be bound by same. TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY HOMECOMING SOAP BOX DERBY CAR INSPECTION Organization: Driver: Inspection Area Inspection Item Description Pass? Helmet Condition & Fit Helmet must be in good physical condition with working chin strap. Axles Size Axle must be solid steel with a minimum diameter or thickness of ½ inch or greater. Brakes Condition Brake material must be rubber or wood composition with a minimum area of 16 sq Operation Brake mechanism must operate freely with foot pressure and no slack in mechanism. Operation Drivers hands or feet must be able to reach brake mechanism. Steering Condition Cable clamps & eyebolts must be visible Operation at axle without removal of any parts. Steering mechanism must work well Car Safety with minimal effort to turn axle. All general aspects of the car must be in good working order and all mechanism of car must be soundly secured.
