The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is the largest global university competition focused on energy management in homes. In the United States, it is organized by the Department of Energy and brings together some 20 collegiate teams who design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. These homes are presented together in a solar village, located at the National Mall in Washington D.C. and assessed in 10 different categories. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. Providing the micro-grid solution. Schneider Electric TM donated the products and engineering services required to implement the micro-grid solution at Solar Decathlon 2011. The micro-grid enables a safe and reliable electrical connection between the solar village and the utility service for the duration of the event. By utilizing the micro-grid, teams competing in the event can power their homes during weather and load variations. Any excess energy that is produced is delivered to the electrical grid to be used by the greater Washington D.C. community. In addition to its sponsorship of Solar Decathlon 2011, Schneider Electric continues to support the three Solar Decathalon Competitions. Micro grid Solar village home Volunteering knowledge and support. More than 50 Schneider Electric volunteers are on-site assisting event organizers with set up, staffing the student lounge, and special functions, and providing guided tours of the homes to the general public. In addition, our technical experts will assist organizers with the operation of the micro-grid and provide on-site expertise and support to the teams. Powering electric vehicles with EVlink. Schneider Electric is providing an electric vehicle charging station as part of the U.S. Department of Energy s Smart Grid Exhibit. Our charging solutions offer a green and economical transportation fuel option while helping to decrease energy waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Monitoring energy use; rewarding efficiency. The micro-grid facilitates energy exchanges between the homes and the utility service throughout the event. This energy balance is made visible to the public thorough the Net Energy Dashboard kiosk powered by Energy Online Pro, which utilizes Schneider Electric metering and software solutions. Schneider Electric has also provided energy management products in more than half of the homes through direct donations to the competing universities, as well as consulting services from its energy experts.
