REAR DIFFERENTIAL FLUID CHANGE PROJECT STUTORIAL 2 ND Generation Cadillac CTS-V (2009-2015) Tool Requirements 10mm Hex Head socket Ratchet 2 inch extender (if you have large rear exhaust) Breaker bar (Optional but recommended) Flashlight Drain Pan 1.5 quarts of Gear oil (Royal Purple 75w-140, Royal Purple 75w-90 or GM fluid with an additive) Hand pump Towels Rear Differential Fluid Change Step by Step (All photos and most of the walkthrough are courtesy of lewdag86 on ctsvowners.com) Step 1 - Locate Differential Drain Plug a. You may or may not need to jack up your car to complete this project. From the rear of the car locate the differential drain plug and fill plug. Step 2 - Remove The Fill Plug a. At this point, you should have your drain pan close by and ready to move under the differential or already under the differential. b. Remove the fill plug on top first using the 10mm socket. Note that the fill plug is likely extremely tight if the fluid has never been changed before. Using a breaker bar at this point to help remove the extremely tight plug is recommended. Step 3 - Remove Drain Plug and Drain Fluid a. Remove the lower drain plugand let the fluid drain into your drain pan. You may see some shavings in your fluid or stuck to the drain plug. The drain plug is magnetic so clean the drain plug with a paper towel. Let the fluid drain out until you do not see any further continuous dripping. When the fluid has completely drained, reinstall the drain plug. Be sure to first turn the plug by hand and not with the ratchet. Step 4 - Refill Differential Fluid a. Attach your pump to the bottle of fluid and begin pumping in new fluid/oil into the fill plug location (location shown on the photo below.) Pumping may feel like eternity but should take approximately five minutes. You will know when you are complete when fluid begins to over flow. It will use approximately one and half bottles of fluid/oil to fill. Step 5 - Reinstall The Fill Plug. a. After you have fully filled the differential, reinstall the fill plug. Be sure to first turn the plug by hand and not with the ratchet. You have now completed your rear differential fluid change.
