3 Instructions 3.1 Using opel-scannercan 1. It is presumed that the user has installed opel-scannercan and registered it before use. If not please see Section 2. 2. Plug in the opel-scannercan USB device into your PC and confirm that the LED turns on. Plug the other end of opel-scanercan into your car s OBDII port. 3. Turn on your car s engine. 4. Launch opel-scanercan software either by the desktop shortcut (if you chose to use one during installation) or via Start > All Programs > opel-scannercan 5. You will see the main opel-scanner screen (Figure 21). Figure 21: opel-scanner main screen 3.2 Connecting to a ECU Press the "Select ECU" button on the Main Screen to open a window where the user can select the ECU he wants to diagnose. Page 16 of 32

Figure 22: Select the ECU module for test Select the Manufacturing Year (Select Year) of the vehicle, then model (Select Model), system (Select System) and eventually the desired ECU (Select Engine/Module). Then press OK. 3.2.1 ECU Info Figure 23: ECU Info Page 17 of 32

The user is presented with the ECU Info panel by default when opel-scannercan connects to the car. In this case it s the Engine Management Unit of a Vauxhall Astra-G 2.2L Convertible. Note: the VIN number has been blanked out purposely for security reasons for this manual but otherwise opelscannercan will display it. The user has several other panels to view by simply pressing the buttons along the top of the window or pressing the corresponding F keys on your keyboard. They are: Trouble Codes Parameters Graphs Special 3.2.2 Trouble Codes Figure 24 If there are any troubles codes (TC) captured then they shall be displayed with the trouble code number, description, if the fault is currently present and some diagnostic info on what the problem may be. Here the user can clear the faults or copy them (ie to print off). Page 18 of 32

3.2.3 Parameters Figure 25: Parameters Here the user can monitor all the sensors connected to the ECU under test in real time. There is a live data list on the left hand pane and whatever is selected is:- Shown in more detail on the right hand pane. Displayed graphically as a scope trace at the bottom of the screen in real time. Sensor data can be selected or deselected (handy if the system seems sluggish due to the amount of data it is processing) in the left hand pane. Page 19 of 32

3.2.4 Graphs Figure 26: Graphs This is similar to the Parameters panel but instead the user can select up to 4 sensors to monitor at the same time in real-time. 3.2.5 Special Depending on what ECU is connected, some have special options other ECU s have none. So it is dependent on what ECU is in use. In this example the user can select/have control of the following:- Actuator Tests (Figure 27): the user can force the ECU under test to actuate sensors that it is connected to. In this case the user can activate the fuel pump relay, EGR valve, cooling fan relay, ECU dash check light and many others. ECU Control 1 (Figure 28): the user can make the engine unit to change the settings of the EGR valve, electronic throttle control and even dial in a new idle speed. Additional Functions (Figure 29): here the user can change or reset the settings for the O2 block learn data for the oxygen sensor and crank angle sensor. Variant Configuration Coding (Figure 30): the user can disconnect (reset) or connect new ECU modules, in this case, on the CAN bus. Particular useful if buying a second hand display for, say, the radio (i.e. BID, GID and CID displays). Page 20 of 32

If anything should go wrong or opel-scannercan seems to have locked up or freeze up, close down opel-scannercan, disconnect the USB device, wait a few minutes, then reconnect and boot everything back up again. For more info, see the Trouble Shooting Guide in Section 5. 3.4 Closing opel-scannercan Simply either:- 1. Click on the Red Cross in the top right hand corner of the window or 2. Click on EXIT button on the main screen. Then disconnect opel-scannercan from your PC. Page 23 of 32

4 Uninstall 4.1 Uninstall opel-scannercan software You can uninstall opel-scannercan like any other Windows software in the normal manner, i.e. via the Control Panel or click on Uninstall opel-scannercan via Start > All Programs > opel-scannercan. Opel-scannerCAN shall uninstall from your PC but the USB drivers and license file still remains. 4.2 Uninstall USB drivers Note: it is perfectly safe and normal to leave unused drivers on your PC. They won't interfere with anything or take up any large space. However if you still wish to uninstall them then follow the instructions below. Warning: the procedure below should only be carried out by experience Windows users. You can damage your operating system from not working if you don t know what you re doing! Please follow the instructions carefully. 1. Plug in the OSC USB device into your computer. 2. Open Device Manager (right click on 'My Computer' or 'This PC' desk top icon and select 'Manage'). In Computer Management select Device Manager under System tools. Or go to Start and in the search box type device manager. 3. In Device Manager, to view any hidden devices that are not plugged in, go to the Menu and click on View > Show hidden devices. Figure 31 4. Scroll down to 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' and select and right click on 'AutoScanner USB Adapter' and select Uninstall. Page 24 of 32

Figure 32 5. On the pop-up window select 'Delete the driver software for this device' then press OK. Figure 33 6. Do the same for any other 'AutoScanner USB Adapter' entries. 7. Plug the OSC USB device into any other USB ports you have and repeat the procedure above. Remove the OSC USB device from your computer once you have finished. 8. Open Registry Editor. Go to Start and enter reg edit in the search box. 9. In Reg Edit go to the top menu and Search > Search and search for 'autoscanner' (do not match case). It will begin to search your computers registry listing for anything with autoscanner in it. This may take a few minutes. Page 25 of 32

Figure 34 10. It may find several hits due to past history but locate the entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AUTOSCANUSB Simply right click on the folder/directory and press Delete. Page 26 of 32

Figure 35 11. It will ask you if are sure you want to delete it. Press Yes to delete the directory. Figure 36 12. All USB drivers are now removed from your computer. Close down Reg Edit to finish. 4.3 Uninstall license file To be defined. Page 27 of 32

5 Trouble Shooting Guide Hint most things are fixed by switching it off and on again! 5.1 How do I boot up or start opel-scannercan software? There are several ways. 1. Double click on the opel-scannercan desktop icon (only visible if you have selected this during installation). 2. Go to Start > All Programs > opel-scannercan and left click on opel-scannercan icon. 5.2 How do I tell what version of opel-scanner I m running? Boot up opel-scanner and the version number is displayed at the bottom. Figure 37: opel-scanner version number 5.3 How many PC s can I install opel-scannercan on? You can install opel-scannercan software onto as many PC s as you want but you can only register them on 3 different PCs and this license is then locked to your opel-scannercan interface ID. If you have bought a new PC but you have disposed of one of your old PC s that had a registered version of opel-scannercan on it, and you want to register your new PC, then please contact us for further details. 5.4 The LED on my opel-scannercan does not light up Either the USB drivers are not installed, the LED is broken on the opel-scannercan (unlikely) or there is a problem with the USB port (i.e. loose connection and hence not getting power from it). Try reconnecting the USB cable or install the USB drivers again. But otherwise if opel-scannercan software still sees the opel-scannercan USB dongle then the LED is not important it s just a light to indicate the device is connected to your PC. It does not impair the operation of opel-scanner from working. 5.5 I ve downloaded an update but opel-scanner won t boot up Sometimes the new downloaded file has not renamed itself correctly, so the opel-scannercan short cuts appear not to work. To manually fix it, go to the opel-scanner directory (should be C:\opel-scannerCAN\) and see if 3 new files have been created, file.info, update.app and update.tmp (Figure 38). Rename update.tmp to Page 28 of 32

update.exe and run the update.exe file. This is the new opel-scanner software and it should complete and rename itself correctly. Figure 38 5.6 Opel-scannerCAN won t connect to my car Some ECU s can be fussy, some like opel-scanner running before the cars electrics are turned on, some don t. Some like the ignition on first and some will only work if the engine is running. Try the following combinations: Opel-scanner plugged in but not running. Switch the car (ignition or engine) on first, then boot up opel-scanner software. Opel-scanner plugged in and running, then switch the car on (ignition or engine). 5.7 Sometimes opel-scanner locks up or freezes This can happen from time to time. The only way out is to shut down opel-scanner and try again. Otherwise follow the advice in Section 5.8. 5.8 I ve tried all the advice above but it still does not work! If you still have no luck with opel-scannercan connecting to your car, or sometimes it disconnects for no reason (i.e. timeout, freezes, lock-ups etc.) then simply switch everything off and on and try again. 1. Switch off the car. Take the key out of ignition. 2. Disconnect the opel-scanner from your PC s USB port (you can leave it connected to your car s OBDII port if you wish) 3. Close opel-scannercan software and shut down your PC. 4. Connect opel-scannercan back into your PC s USB port and power your PC back up. 5. Then follow the connection combinations as mentioned in Section 5.6 above. 6. If you still have problems then see out Support information in Section 6. Page 29 of 32

6 Support If you need more information or have a technical question regarding the opel-scannercan product, then please see the following: Read the manual again including the Trouble Shooting guide the answer may be there! Trying switching it off and on again this fixes most problems. Search the opel-scanner forums at www.opel-scanner.com (note: you need to register to see more sub-sections and to be able to post questions).
