Introduction 1. About Solkar SOLKAR is a very well known brand in India amongst other companies in Solar Industry. Started in the year 1984, by Mr. K. E. RAGHUNATHAN, an engineer with specialization in the field of solar energy, as a First Generation Entrepreneur. We are operating for more than 33 years in this industry with wide Innovation of Solar Products to reach a common man. In his path of travel as an entrepreneurship he was recognised as Awarded BEST SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIALIST in 1995 by Govt of India. He is not only known for his business acumen but has also been a contributor to the society with his TRUST MOVEMENT FOR GREEN REVOLUTION with which he is onto a path of donating 1 Million solar lamps to poor people and providing job for 20000 young engineers. We offer unrivalled breadth and depth of products and integrating technologies across platforms including Solar power plant both grid and off grid types, Solar Water Heater, Solar Street Lights, portable solar products such as Solar Lanterns, Solar Fans, SUN UPS etc. SOLKAR is ISO 9001:2000 certified for our Quality Management System. We support our customer with our expertise right from Design, Manufacturing, Installation & Maintenance and effective after sales service. 2. How to use SOLAR POWER for your Home? Primarily a Solar Power system works as under The Solar Module generates electricity when the sun shine falls on it and through a Charge Controller it is charged into the and later using an Inverter it is connected to the load. It can also directly feed the load without using the Inverter. Therefore there are two types of system which you can use : 1. Systems with storage or battery back up 2. Systems without battery and exporting power to grid when not consumed through net metering. The selection of the type of system depends on your needs. If you are living in a power cut area and your primary need to invest on solar power system is to have power during power cut times then you must go for SOLAR SYSTEMS with back up. In these back up systems you can also save EB bills during non power cut times and can also use solar power during power cut times. If you are living in a area where there is no Power cut at all and your primary interest to use solar power for saving of electricity Bill, then you can have SOLAR SYSTEM without battery. However, the Net Metering process is unpredictable and you will not be able to use or upload solar power in case of EB failure. SOLKAR does not recommend GRID TIE SOLAR systems for capacity less than 5 KW. All Grid Tie Inverters below 5 KVA are NOT made in India and they are predominantly imported from China. 3. DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOLAR SYSTEMS FOR HOME. SOLAR SYSTEMS WITH BATTERY BACK UP This type of system comes with battery back-up. The Solar electricity generated, is used for charging the battery first and once the battery is charged it is given to the load directly with any additional requirement is taken from the normal electricity supply. There are two choices of selection available and they are OPTION 1: SOLAR - EB - BATTERY - means order of preference to the load - First priority is Solar Power, when Solar Power is not available EB power is used and when both not available power will be used. These are ideal for buildings which have Power Cut. OPTION 2 SOLAR - BATTERY - EB - means order of preference to the load - The first priority is Solar Power, next is and last will be EB Power. These are suitable for buildings which has No Power Cut. If you are not going to be in the house in the day time to use solar energy when generated, go for this mode. When you return back the battery will give you the power which was saved during day time. If you use this mode you may not have battery storage when there is a power cut. Email: sales@solkar.in Website : www.solkar.in 4
SOLAR SYSTEM WITHOUT BATTERY These systems are meant for installations on your Roof top. These type of systems do not have any battery back-up. The Solar power generation, through the inverter, is directly given to the load in the building. When there is no consumption the solar power can be exported to the Grid. Now we have NET METERING available and therefore every unit exported to the Grid can save your electricity bill. These are very common for those who are installing Roof Top Power Plant to meet the SPO obligation and for those who are primarily installing Solar Power Plant mainly to save on electricity cost. These system generally will have EB power source and/or diesel genset. The main criteria to remember for installation this system is There is no storage available for the electricity generated from the solar power. There will no output from the inverter, if even Solar Energy is generated, without availability of EB power or genset power. If the load is less than the generation of the solar power then the excess solar power will be given back to the grid and the customer need to install NET METER. These aspects are a must for a customer to know before choosing the system. Not many suppliers reveal this crucial aspects of the design. NET METERING ; The concept of NET metering allows a customer to export electricity to Grid and claim for the units exported in their EB bills. There are separate two directional meters available to achieve this purpose. When EB power is used the meter runs in one direction and when Electricity is exported to Grid it runs in the opposite direction. Separate approval must be taken from the local TANGEDCO office for this net metering installations. Net metering is not available in back up systems. Email: sales@solkar.in Website : www.solkar.in 5
4. How to calculate System Sizing? The first step while designing the system is to prepare a Load Chart as mentioned below : Load Chart Specimen This is important detail, the user should prepare himself Appliances Watts Consumed Qty Back up Hrs Required DAY TIME NIGHT TIME Total Watts Tube Light 40 W 4 2 4 960 Ceiling Fans 75 W 3 3 3 1350 Refrigerator 300 W 1 4 2 1800 Television 120 W 1 0 6 720 Total Watt Hours 4830 Column (6) is arrived by multiplying Column (2), (3) and (4+5). This means that you need a solar system which can generate power as per col (6) in a day. Please note the Total Watt Hours which is the result of the chart and you can correlate this with the Technical Specification Chart in the Generation per day column given below and find what will be the size of your system requirement. The battery sizing depends on the load which will be used during non sunny hours. Therefore, the first thing a user must do is to prepare the load chart as above. Please do not take into account 3 phase appliances or Air conditioner as they will consume more energy and economically unviable. In our opinion, please take into account all 5 Amps Usage in the house into solar and do not take Aircon or Microwave Oven or Grinder or 15 Amps plug point usages. At this moment the cost of producing solar power below 5 KW with battery will be about Rs. 6.25 per unit as Domestic users do not enjoy depreciation benefit or high cost of power. What is Required at Site? A shadow free space (area based on system capacity) should be available in the roof top facing South direction (North direction can be selected if South direction is not feasible). The roof can be Flat / Angular facing south. It needs to have the approach to clean periodically. Inverters and Batteries will be kept nearer to the Main Distribution Box. The load of each block in the building should be calculated separately. The weight of a solar module will be about 0.20 kg per watt.
