Locomotives ES64F4 (BR 189), Germany The future of cross-border traffic As European countries become more close-knit, there is an increasing demand for locomotives that can operate across borders. By equipping them with ETCS, ATB, and SCMT train protection systems, the customer prepared its 160 type ES64F4 locomotives for Europe s corridors. Refurbishment also included adapting the electrical and mechanical systems, installing and assembling components as well as commissioning and documentation. Metro São Paulo, Brazil Extending the fleet life The complete renovation of this fleet meant bringing the vehicles up to the technological state of the art. With this project, Siemens not only extended the service life of the systems but increased passenger capacity by eliminating the central driver s cabs. Sub-systems such as the traction unit, on-board power supply, entrance doors, air conditioning, compressed air supply, fire alarm, passenger information system and CCTV were completely replaced with new, modern systems. Desiro UK Class 450, United Kingdom Increasing passenger capacity In order to keep pace with growing numbers of passengers, the customer opted for a complete redesign of the vehicle interiors. On the basis of a sophisticated floor-plan design, Siemens developed a logical conversion package for this renovation. In addition to replacing the tables, seats, and waste containers, the plan also included refurbishment of the doors and floors and installation of additional handrails. 4

Guadalajara mass transit, Mexico Reliable, standardized train sets The conversion of the present drive system from DC to AC allowed the customer SITEUR to combine the vehicles with other AC train sets in the future. At the same time, the use of new AC drive motors meant a standardized supply of spare parts for the entire vehicle fleet. As part of the refurbishment, a modern traction and braking control system was also installed. 5

Desiro Classic, Austria Complex welding work A collision with a cement truck in July 2008 destroyed the entire cab of the regional train. In addition, the front section with underframe and the side wall were severely damaged. The solution was to rebuild the complete front. Siemens carried out the complex welding work on the aluminum coach body in its own workshop. The interior work was performed locally by the customer. 6
Reconstruction of the vehicle cab: Comprehensive repair of the severe damage to the front and side gets the ÖBB Desiro Classic back into service promptly. Combino Melbourne, Australia Reconstruction of the aluminum front section The front of an aluminum vehicle suffered extreme damage in a collision between two streetcars in September 2007. The vehicle was transported to Germany for repairs, where an intensive damage analysis was carried out in the Siemens workshop. Based on the evaluation, Siemens engineers decided to fabricate a complete new front part. The assemblies were prepared in a flexible welding device system. Streetcar Mannheim MGT6D, Germany Commissioning included The steel vehicle suffered serious damage to the front and the underframe in a frontal collision in February 2009. Siemens found an efficient solution for the elaborate repair of the underframe, including the front section, by reconstructing the complete front of the vehicle. The dismantling, repair, and assembly work was carried out at Siemens workshop at the Test- and Validationcenter in Wegberg-Wildenrath. The comprehensive repair package included commissioning the vehicle. Streetcar Heidelberg MGT6, Germany Reconstruction of the steel front section In June 2009, the steel vehicle was involved in a collision caused by incorrectly set points. After measuring the entire vehicle, the experts went about repairing the severe damage on the side of the coach body, underframe, and front section. The difficult straightening work that was necessary was performed on a special straightening rig in the Siemens workshop in Wegberg-Wildenrath, which is specially equipped for accident repairs. 7
