Instruction Sheet P/N Nordson Airless Nozzle Tester. Introduction The Nordson airless nozzle tester is used to test the flow rate of flanged airless nozzles. The results of the tests can be used to determine nozzle wear prevent use of worn or partially plugged nozzles set up a replacement schedule based on wear rates over time.. Description Nozzle wear is most easily detected by changes in flow rate. As a nozzle wears, flow rate through the nozzle orifice increases. Plugging will decrease the flow rate. By comparing the flow rate of a used nozzle with that of a new one, the amount of wear or plugging can be determined. Airless Nozzle Tester. Description (contd.) The used nozzle is mounted on the nozzle tester gun. Clean, de-ionized or distilled water is sprayed through the nozzle at a pressure of 0 psi for 0 or 60 seconds. The water is collected in a 00 milliliter beaker and weighed. This weight is then compared to the figures given in Table for a new nozzle of the same flow rate. NOTE: This nozzle tester is not meant to be an incoming inspection device. It is intended only to monitor nozzle wear and detect partially plugged nozzles. If the variation from the specified nominal flow rate is not significant, the nozzle can be put back into service. Recommendations based on variation from nominal flow rate are given in Table. Features and Requirements The nozzle tester includes Model A0A Airless Electric Spray Gun One gallon pressure reservoir with 8 psi relief valve Gun power supply and 0/60 second timer 00 ml beaker Water and air filters, fast-acting regulator, and gauge. The user must supply Power 0 or 0 Vac, single phase, 0-60 Hz Compressed Air 60 to 00 psi clean, dry air Gram scale, capacity -000 grams, ± 0. gram accuracy De-ionized or distilled water. You must also know the nominal nozzle flow rates for the nozzles being tested. Nominal flow rates are listed, by nozzle part number, in the Nordson Airless Nozzle Catalog index.. Installation. Install a / NPT male quick disconnect on the ball valve. Close the ball valve and connect an air supply hose to the disconnect. The air supply can also be hard-plumbed, if desired.. Open the timer enclosure and run a three conductor power cord through a knockout in the bottom of the enclosure and connect to terminal block # (TB) as shown in Figure. The tester is shipped set for 0 Vac. If 0 Vac is used, relocate the jumpers on TB as shown in Figure. Close the timer enclosure and plug the power cord into an appropriate receptacle. If desired, hard-wire power supply, using conduit and appropriate connectors according to codes. Power supply should terminate in an appropriate disconnect.

Airless Nozzle Tester. Testing Nozzles. See Figure. Pull the relief valve ring (0) to ensure no air pressure is present in the pressure reservoir (). Open the reservoir and fill it with clean, de-ionized or distilled water.. Install the test nozzle on the A0A gun (7), using the retaining nut supplied with the gun.. Turn on the test unit power (). The indicator light () should glow red.. Set the timer (7) to 0 seconds.. Open the ball valve () and set the pressure to 0 psi. A small amount of air will be continuously exhausted from the fast-acting air pressure regulator. This is normal. NOTE: Monitor the gauge (6). All tests should be made with the pressure at a constant 0 psi. If the next nozzle to be tested has a different nominal flow rate, perform steps through 6 again to adjust the pressure for the new nozzle to exactly 0 psi. 6. Place a container under the gun and trigger the test unit by depressing the START button (). While the gun is spraying, adjust the regulator (9) to obtain exactly 0 psi. 7. Empty the water from the beaker (8) and weigh the beaker. Record the beaker tare weight (empty weight). Place the beaker under the nozzle. 8. Refer to the test chart for the optimum time for the nozzle being tested. Nozzles with a flow rate below 0.00 gpm should be tested for 60 seconds. Set the timer for your nozzle. 9. Depress the START button (). 0. When the gun stops spraying, place the beaker on an accurate gram scale and weigh it. Subtract the beaker tare weight to obtain the weight of the water.. Refer to Table. Read across from the nominal flow rate for the nozzle being tested to the weight given in the appropriate seconds column. Compare the weight of the water in the beaker with the figure given in Table. Refer to Table for variations and recommendations.
Airless Nozzle Tester. Flow Rate Measurements Based on Volume A 00 ml graduated cylinder is also included with the tester. If you do not have an appropriate scale, use the ml cylinder instead of the beaker and convert milliliters to grams using this formula: milliliter H O = gram Table Recommendations Based on Variation from Nominal Flow Rate Status Nozzles with Flow Rates of 0.0 GPM or Less Nozzles with Flow Rates Over 0.0 GPM OK ±. grams ± 0% Consider Replacement Greater than. grams Greater than ± 0% Replacement Recommended Greater than.0 grams Greater than ± % NOTE: Variations and recommendations are only guidelines.
