SAMSON References Biofuel Processing
Biofuels Renewable energy An ecological alternative Biofuels, such as biodiesel, vegetable oil, ethanol, biomethane or synthetic biomass to liquid (BTL) fuels, present an ecological alternative to fossil fuels. As biofuels are produced from renewable biomass, they save resources and contribute to climate protection with a balanced ratio between carbon dioxide intake and output. In recent years, processing plants sprang up all across the world to enable the efficient production of a wide variety of biofuels in specialized processes tailored to the various energy sources. For over 70 of these plants, SAMSON supplied the entire control valve technology: butterfl y valves, ball valves, selfoperated regulators and highly specialized control valves with hybrid positioners. Biofuels Sample applications Louis Dreyfus Louis Dreyfus, USA Louis Dreyfus Agriculture Industries LLC owns the largest biodiesel plant in the United States near Claypool, Indiana. They operate a 1.36 million t per year soybean processing plant and a facility that produces more than 264,000 t of biodiesel. This Louis Dreyfus site has SAMSON s Types 3241 and 3310 Valves in process. Neckermann Renewables, Germany Pure rape oil, which is extracted in the incorporated rapeseed mill, is refined into 200,000 t of B5 biodiesel annually. As byproducts, the Wittenberg plant turns out 20,000 t of pharmaceutical-grade glycerine and 360,000 t of rapeseed meal that is sold as fodder. One of Europe s largest plants of this kind is equipped with 113 SAMSON control valves. BIOX Shell BIOX Corporation, Canada BIOX Corporation s biodiesel plant in Hamilton, Ontario was the first commercial-scale biodiesel production facility to be built in Canada. SAMSON supplied 76 valves with positioners to BIOX to assist in their 47,000 t per year production of biodiesel. Choren, Germany In cooperation with Shell, the group opened the world s first BTL plant to produce SunDiesel, a synthetic fuel. The Carbo-V process generates 15,000 t of the second-generation biofuel from wood chips and relies on 165 SAMSON control valves.
Biopetrols, the Netherlands The plant in Rotterdam, which belongs to Europe s largest biodiesel producer, is designed for an initial production capacity of 400,000 t of biodiesel and 60,000 t of pharmaceuticalgrade glycerine per year. Plans to expand the annual capacity to 650,000 t have already been made. More than 300 SAMSON control valves regulate the production process. Martifer, Portugal Prio SA is the biofuels division of the Martifer Group. The company has over 22,000 hectares of land under cultivation for biofuel feedstock. In Nazaré, known for its fishing port, Martifer owns a refinery fitted with 47 control valves supplied by SAMSON. The plant produces 100,000 t of biodiesel annually. Diester Industrie, France The Capelle-la-Grande plant of the European market leader, which is located near the French port of Dunkirk on the English Channel, is equipped with 48 SAMSON control valves. A total of 250,000 t of biodiesel is extracted from oilseed each year. Lereno, Malaysia Different plant oils, e.g. palm oil, are processed in the plant located in Lumut on the west coast of the Malaysian peninsula to produce a perfect blend of low-temperature biodiesel. 77 SAMSON control valves help achieve an annual output capacity of 60,000 t.
