Backwater Protection - things you need to know Prevention Not properly protecting a building against backwater can result in damage that is extremely expensive to repair. As a preventative measure, all open fixtures (shower, floor drain, sink, toilet, clothes washer) located below ground level in a building should be equipped with a properly specified and installed KESSEL backwater valve. Taking preventative action is very inexpensive and assures that a building is protected against the costly affects of backwater damage. How it works A backwater valve is an item installed within the wastewater drainage pipe of a building. During normal conditions the valve allows wastewater being drained from the building to pass through it, but in the case of heavy rains, flooding or a blocked pipe, the backwater valve will prevent storm or floodwater from backing up in the drainage pipe and flooding the lower areas of the building.
