2018 REPLACEMENT RATES OF U.S. AUTOMOTIVE PARTS AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET SUPPLIERS ASSOCIATION AASA, The Voice for the Automotive Aftermarket Supplier Industry
2018 replacement rates of u.s. REPLACEMENT automotive parts RATES OF U.S. AUTOMOTIVE PARTS WHAT ARE REPLACEMENT RATES? The replacement rate is the percentage of all privately owned light vehicles on the road that received a specific repair or service job. AASA s replacement rates are derived from an IMR, Inc. survey of more than 100,000 households maintaining a total of ~250,000 light vehicles each year. Trends in replacement rates over time are very important, and the AASA Replacement Rates Report is the only aftermarket publication that depicts a five-year trend in replacement rates. Replacement rates can change over time and vary year-to-year due to factors including the economy, product durability, design requirements, technological innovation, weather, prices, installer recommendations, vehicle usage (miles driven), and even government regulations. This replacement rate data is a benefit exclusive to AASA members. NOTE: Additional detailed replacement rate information is available from IMR that includes service outlet, vehicle type and age, geographical distribution, and maintainer demographics. For more information, contact IMR at 800-654-1079 or visit www.automotiveresearch.com. HOW REPLACEMENT RATES CAN BE USED: UNIT MARKET SIZE ESTIMATES The unit market size for a given component or service job can be approximated by multiplying the replacement rate times the number of vehicles in use. For example, oxygen sensors had a replacement rate of 2.85 in 2015. Multiplying this replacement rate of 2.85 percent times 257.9 million light vehicles in use results in a 2015 aftermarket size estimate for oxygen sensors of 7.4 million units. The formula is graphically depicted below: (Replacement Rate) x (Vehicles in Use) = Market Size [in units] In our oxygen sensor example, the formula therefore is: (2.85%) x (257.9 million) = 7.4 million aftermarket oxygen sensors 2017 Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association AASA REPLACEMENT RATES OF U.S. AUTOMOTIVE PARTS 2
2018 replacement rates of u.s. REPLACEMENT automotive parts RATES OF U.S. AUTOMOTIVE PARTS Service jobs often require the use of several units of a part or several additional products. For example, in under hood jobs the number of cylinders may be an important factor in determining the number of components necessary. A hose replacement may require two hose clamps as well as the hose. Therefore, the replacement rates listed in our table can be used to estimate the market size of many parts that are not specifically listed in the table. To estimate the unit market size for several parts, a service job variable may have to be added. For these parts, the market sizing formula would therefore be: (Replacement Rate) x (Vehicles in Use) x (Service Job Variable, or # of parts replaced per service job) = Market Size [in units] So, in the example of a lower radiator hose, the specific formula would be: (1.40%) x (257.9 million) x (2) = 1.6 million replacement rate per job vehicles in use clamps aftermarket units in 2015 PRODUCT DURABILITY The life span of a part in the real world can also be estimated by using replacement rates. Let s use batteries as an example. In 2015, the battery replacement rate was 30.74. One hundred percent (all vehicles) divided by 30.74 percent (those who had changed their battery) is about 3.25. In other words, it appears that batteries were changed, on average, at a rate of once every 3 years.
