REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS: Motor repair and disassembly is accomplished in the following manner (refer to parts list page): Retain motor housing in smooth-jawed vise by clamping on motor housing flats. CAUTION: Do not over-tighten vise. Remove gear lock nut using a box chain or wench (right hand thread). CAUTION: Care should be taken when removing gear case from motor housing since planetary gearing is not retained in the gear case. Refer to Disassembly Of Torque Control Air Shut-Off With motor assembly in vertical position, remove stack up nut (right hand thread) using a wrench. On reversible units remove o-ring, reverse actuating ring, and threaded pin. Remove motor package from housing. Disassemble motor package by removing retaining rings from both ends of the rotor. Remove gearing from gear cage.on some double geared tools it will be necessary to remove the thrust washer and at least one idler gear pin from the lower gear stage to provide clearance for the lower gear stage to pass through the upper ring gear. CAUTION: Hold housing in vertical position with handle up to prevent loss of ball. Use extreme care not to bend valve stem when removing pilot valve assembly from handle. In BB model tools, the bleed adjustment screw can be removed for cleaning. DISASSEMBLY OF TORQUE CONTROL AIR SHUT- OFF ASSEMBLY: To disassemble the torque control air shut-off assembly use the following procedure: Hold motor housing by flats in a smooth-jawed vise. CAUTION: Do not over-tighten vise. Using a spanner wrench, turn adapter nut counterclockwise(right hand thread). Continue to un-thread adapter nut until free from motor housing. After cleaning and replacing worn parts, coat parts with a light film of Gardner-Denver oil. If needle bearings or roller bearings have been washed, a thin coat of Gardner-Denver grease should be applied to the rollers or balls. o-rings should be coated with a light film of Parker O-Ring Lube 516289 Remove lower clutch block assembly race, and thrust bearing. Remove four screws. Clutch housing cap and adapter nut are then loose. Turn adjusting ring so that arrow on O.D. registers with pawl slot in clutch housing. remove adjustment ring. CAUTION: care should be taken not to lose springs and balls held captive under adjustment ring and pawl. The removal of the adjustment ring will release ball race from clutch housing. Spring and washer can then be removed. Remove retaining ring from inside lower clutch block and remove output from gear spindle. CAUTION: When output gear spindle is removed from lower clutch block, twelve balls will drop out. Remove retaining ring from O.D. of lower clutch block and remove thrust bearing and thrust race. 518383 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS: To reassemble basic tool, use the following instructions: Reassemble motor package, including retaining rings and insert into motor housing. Add stack-up nut, using wrench to tighten down. Check motor manually to determine that the motor is free to turn. CAUTION: This motor is designed in such a manner that back pressure from the exhaust system is used to balance axial forces on the rotor. If the motor is run above 30psig. without any portion of the exhaust system, the lower end of the rotor and the lower end plate will suffer excessive wear. Reassemble gearing. Holding gear case vertically, place idler gears and idler gear pins in gear cage and and insert into gear case. CAUTION: Maintain gear assembly in the vertical position until assembly to motor unit has been completed. When the upper stage of gearing in a double geared tool includes a slip-on sun gear, it will be necessary to use alignment gage when placing the upper stage of gearing in the gear case. NOTE: On some double geared tools it will be necessary to leave out one idler gear pin in the lower stage until it has been positioned in the lower ring gear. Slide upper lock nut over the O.D. of the gear case and thread onto the motor handle assembly, using a box or a chain wrench. Tighten to 75 ft.-lbs. minimum. AIR SHUT-OFF TORQUE CONTROL AIR SHUT-OFF CLUTCH: Slide retaining ring over end of output spindle having three grooves and place against shoulder on output spindle. Replace balls in grooves of output spindle (4 per groove). By placing small amount Gardner-Denver grease in each groove, the balls can easily be kept in proper position. Insert output spindle with balls into lower clutch block and assemble retaining ring. To O.D. of lower clutch block, add thrust bearing, thrust race, and retaining ring. NOTE: Thrust race includes o-ring. To lower clutch block assembly add thrust race, thrust bearing, and thrust race in the order indicated. Place washer, spring, and lower clutch block assembly in clutch housing in the order indicated. CAUTION: Small diameter of spring must bear against thrust race of lower clutch block assembly. Insert balls and adjustment springs into bushings of clutch housing. Place spring under pawl. Depress lower clutch block assembly as far as possible, compress two opposite adjustment springs, and release lower clutch block assembly. Maintaining compressive loading on adjustment springs, slide adjustment ring over clutch housing and adjustment springs so that index arrow registers with pawl slot. Depress pawl and rotate adjustment ring to the maximum setting. Slip clutch housing cap through adapter nut. Insert four screws through clutch housing and tighten to clutch housing cap 516289 NOTE: When clutch is assembled to tool, tighten adapter nut to 75 ft.-lbs. minimum. ADJUSTMENT OF AIR SHUT-OFF HANDLE: After complete tool has been assembled, adjust mechanism in the following manner: Adjust line pressure to 60 psig. Page 11

Turn adjustment screw clockwise against seat. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. Turn adjustment screw4-1/4 revolutions counterclockwise. Depress trigger button. Screw bleed screw in clockwise, using 1/8 turn increments until the tool continuesto run when started. CAUTION: Further closing of bleed screw may cause shut-off feature to be inoperative and tool may stall. ADJUSTMENT OF TORQUE CONTROL AIR SHUT- OFF CLUTCH: With clutch assembled in the tool, adjustment for desired torque should be done on the job which the tool will be used on, or a test fixture simulating the actual job. Viewing the tool from the handle end, depress pawl and turn adjustment ring clockwise to a point where the arrow on the adjustment ring registers with the pawl slot. Clutch is now adjusted to the minimum setting. Measure output torque applied to test fixture, or to job application and turn adjustment ring counterclockwise until desired torque is obtained. CAUTION: If not properly adjusted for application conditions, tool may stall or fail to start. Page 12
