KOSO HAMMEL DAHL VeCTor Trim 510D/530D SERIES VELOCITY CONTROL TRIM FOR KOSO HAMMEL DAHL VALVES Manufactured by KOSO AMERICA, Inc.

Series 510D/530D The Series 510D and 530D provide VeCTor velocity control trim in a stacked disk configuration. This advanced design eliminates the damaging effects of noise and erosion typically associated with severe service applications. Available in globe and angle body configurations, the 510D is our standard offering while the 530D offers special body configurations for higher capacities. VeCTor trims deliver the benefits of extended life, reduced maintenance and improved process performance. VeCTor - Velocity Control Trim Velocity control trim is suitable for compressible and incompressible fluids and provides many advantages that result in improved performance, reduced maintenance and system simplification. This advanced design velocity control trim prevents the generation of noise and/or cavitation at the source, eliminating the need for supplementary devices such as diffusers and silencers, and the related expense. Principle of Velocity Control VeCTor trim is based on the principles of velocity control. The tortuous fluid path is formed by channels machined into one side of a flat cylindrical disk. These disks are then positioned, one on top of another, to form the stack which functions like a cage in more conventional designs. The disks are firmly connected by vacuum brazing, eliminating external leakage, or short circuiting. As fluid passes through each channel, the pressure reduction and velocity is controlled by the number of levels (turns or stages) and the controlled expansion of the flow path. Preventing Cavitation When fluid flows through a constriction, such as a valve, there is a reduction, followed by a recovery, of system pressure. If at any time the fluid pressure drops below its vapor pressure, the fluid will vaporize or flash. A flashing fluid which subsequently recovers to a pressure greater than the vapor pressure causes the vapor bubble to collapse. This 2-stage process is known as cavitation. Through proper sizing and selection of velocity control trim, the system drop is staged, preventing it from dropping below the vapor pressure and eliminating cavitation and its damaging effects. Preventing Erosion Cavitation is not the only potentially destructive influence on a valve. Erosion due to entrained particles or fluid droplets can be just as damaging. According to the Laws of Continuity, as fluid flows though a restriction in a pipeline, such as a valve, its velocity will increase exponentially in order to pass an equal amount of flow through the smaller restriction. VeCTor trims separate fluid flow into numerous paths with multiple turns or restrictions which stage the total pressure drop. Together the number of stages or turns and the expansion ratio of the channel, work to prevent the generation of elevated fluid velocity and its damaging effects. 2

510D/530D - 1 Specifications Body Style: Globe and Angle 510D Standard body design 530D Extended body for additional capacity Body Size: 1 through 36 [25mm through 914mm] (DN 25 through 900). Trim Characteristic: Linear, modified linear and modified equal percentage. Individual disks provide a linear flow characteristic. Various combinations of the number of paths and turns per disk allow for modified linear and modified equal percentage characteristics, designed specifically to application needs. Trim Materials: Refer to Table 1 on page 4. Flow Coefficient: 510D standard Cv from 1.5 through 680, others are available on application. The 510D/530D design allows for a limitless number of variables that will determine rated Cv and valve performance including; valve size, plug size, number of paths, number of turns, disk thickness and disk stack height. An experienced Application Engineer will select the proper trim based on your specific application. Leakage Class: ANSI/FCI Class IV, V, VI and MSS-SP-61 Actuators: Standard bonnet mount will accept springdiaphragm, piston and other actuators. KOSO HAMMEL DAHL recommends the REXA selfcontained electro-hydraulic actuator for maximum performance and reliability in your critical service application. 3

Body Material Selection The 510D and 510M Series are available in a number of body materials and ratings per ANSI pressure class specifications. In addition to application pressure and temperature, other factors may affect the selection of body material. Please consult with an application engineer for proper selection of all materials of construction. Trim Material Selection The trim material code specifies the balance seal ring, in addition to the plug, seat ring and disk stack. Codes are specific to body materials based on thermal expansion coefficients. Table 1 below provides the codes for each trim material combination. Table 2 shows the applicable temperature range and body material for each trim code. Flow Data The rated Cv of VeCTor velocity trims changes based on body design, trim level and material. The higher the level, the more stages or turns that create additional resistance and consequently lower flow capacity. To allow for additional flexibility, some valve sizes are available with multiple rated travels. The 530D body design is used for applications that require even higher capacities. Flow direction is based on flowing media. Liquids flow from the outside of the disk to the inside, commonly referred to as Flow Over. Steam and other gases flow from the inside of the disk to the outside, also called Flow Under. The flow passage increases in the flow direction. The section of the disk to the right has eight 90 turns making it a Level 8 trim. The charts below list only a sampling of the available VeCTor trim configurations. Please contact an application engineer for assistance with sizing and specification of VeCTor trims. 510D/530D - 1 Table 3 ANSI Class 150-600 Maximum Cv Valve Size Level 0 Level 2 Level 4 Level 6 Level 8 1 6 5.7 5 4.4 3.4 1.5 17 14 11.4 9.6 6.8 2 45 23.2 19.9 16.2 12.8 3 70 60.4 52.4 44.5 33.5 4 153 104 86.2 74.9 57 6 258 170 140 120 98 8 471 300 248 204 161 10 779 429 341 287 225 12 1100 502 374 297 243 Table 4 ANSI Class 900-2500 Maximum Cv Valve Size Level 8 Level 12 Level 16 Level 20 Level 24 1 3.3 1.5 11 4.9 2 14.7 9.4 4.5 3 30 20 15.1 9.9 4 52 38 26 18.5 13.2 6 157 120 86 64 41 8 268 209 149 117 81 10 368 268 192 153 100 Velocity Control Trim for KOSO HAMMEL DAHL Valves 5
