1 MARKET OVERVIEW 1.1 EVOLUTION OF TOUCHLESS SENSING With the rapid change in technology in the present scenario, touchless came into existence when the companies wanted to differentiate themselves from their competitors and give the customers something new and different all the times. Touchless sensing is an overlap between touch and touchless. This technology uses the most common sensors such as infrared ones which are enabled with artificial intelligence and the capacitive sensors wherein there is a slight extension of the antenna that helps in increasing the sensitivity of the sensor. These sensors when installed in the conventional faucet, soap dispenser, trash cans, give rise to touchless products. When touch screens were introduced, it took five to seven years for the users to accept and use the technology. Then came in multi touch, where one could use more than one finger to operate the system. Post that came in the touchless technology, which deals with using gestures to operate a particular system. The market acceptance of the touchless technology in the gesture recognition market is quite low as of today but is expected to increase in the next three to five years. 1.2 TOUCHLESS SENSING APPLICATION ANALYSIS The touchless sensing market has its applications in sanitary equipment and touchless biometric systems. 1.2.1 TOUCHLESS SANITARY EQUIPMENT PRODUCT ANALYSIS The touchless sanitary equipment market is a segment of touchless sensing and has its applications in all products used in a restroom. These solutions help to save water, soap, paper, and maintain high levels of hygiene. The below pie describes the increase in the usage of such equipment in the next five years. FIGURE 2 TOUCHLESS SANITARY EQUIPMENT 2010 2015 Touchless Faucets Touchless Soap Dispensers Touchless Trashcans Touchless Towel Dispensers and Flushometers Hand Dryers The touchless sanitary equipments are divided into five types of products: namely touchless faucets, touchless soap dispensers, touchless trash cans, touchless towel dispensers and flushometers, and hand dryers. Hand dryers have been in the market for over five decades The hand dryer market is a mature market and are now being installed in new constructions taking place. The hand dryer market is expected to drop down from in 2010 to in 2015. MarketsandMarkets 4
The market for other applications such as touchless faucets, touchless flushometers, touchless soap dispensers, and touchless towel dispensers is expected to increase over a period of five years and will find its applications in households as well. 1.2.2 TOUCHLESS BIOMETRICS PRODUCT ANALYSIS The applications of touchless biometrics include touchless fingerprint recognition, iris recognition, and face recognition. It is expected that in the next five years, the touchless fingerprint recognition system will replace touch-based fingerprint recognition systems due to their accuracy. FIGURE 3 TOUCHLESS BIOMETRIC APPLICATIONS MARKET ANALYSIS 2010 2015 Touchless fingerprint recognition Iris recognition Face recognition The market for touchless fingerprint recognition is expected to grow in the next five years from in 2010 to in 2015 due to the increasing need for security. Touchless fingerprint provides more accurate pictures than touch-based fingerprint recognition systems. As, in touch based fingerprint recognition system, if the hands of the individual are not clean or if they have any kind of an injury, an accurate picture cannot be taken. Face recognition market is expected to drop down from in 2010 to in 2015 due to the other sophisticated touchless biometric systems being introduced that are more accurate. In face recognition, the MarketsandMarkets 5
picture of the entire face is taken in two steps, whereas in case of iris, the picture of the iris needs to be taken and this takes less than five seconds. 1.3 GESTURE RECOGNITION APPLICATION ANALYSIS 1.3.1 TARGET APPLICATIONS OF GESTURE RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY The most attractive target market for gesture recognition application is consumer electronics. The next attractive application would be gaming; followed by transportation, healthcare, and automotive. The gesture recognition in consumer electronics is growing by the years. This technology can be adopted in televisions, tablets, laptops, and mobile phones. This certainly has the highest growth potential. The gaming application is the next attractive application in gesture recognition technology. The other applications such as healthcare, automobiles, and transportation are also an attractive market but the future lies in consumer electronics and gaming. 1.3.2 FUTURE APPLICATIONS OF GESTURE RECOGNITION Gesture recognition is finding applications across several sectors. Applications mentioned below are in the pipeline. These are expected to commercialize in the next five years. FIGURE 5 FUTURE APPLICATIONS OF GESTURE RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY Defense Future applications of gesture recognition technology Healthcare Retail MarketsandMarkets 7
In future, gesture recognition in healthcare will help in performance of surgeries in hospitals. The doctor will be able to look through the details of various parts of the body using this technology and hence it will be easy to detect the cause of disease; on the other hand, if the surgeon needs to refer to any information about the details of the surgery and read it, the surgeon can use gestures and scroll through the screen. This helps to maintain hygiene as the there is no direct contact required to touch the screen. Gesture recognition, in retail, helps to understand consumer behavior. A magic mirror combined with computer vision can help the retailers monitor consumer behavior. This will help the companies to accelerate their sale cycle, enhance user experience, and save on time and costs. The user can navigate quickly through the available options; get real time stock if the stock is available. The user can also discover any company s products, compare prices, and have a 3D look at the product using gestures on the screen. Gesture recognition, in defense, will help in tracking the motions of the enemies. With the help of a robot, the movements can be tracked. Gait recognition is one of the applications that will be used in defense and one will be able to track the manner in which the person walks. MarketsandMarkets 8
