Advancing Electric Vehicles in Edmonton SPARK Conference 2017 November 8, 2017

Guiding City Strategies Advancing electric vehicles contributes to the City s environmental sustainability and resiliency goals. 2

Targets Edmonton s Community Energy Transition Strategy By 2035: Reduce GHG emissions 35% Reduce energy consumption 25% per person Generate 10% of Edmonton's electricity locally Electrification of transportation system is a key element. 3

Supportive Provincial and Federal Action Alberta Climate Leadership Plan Pollution from coal-fired electricity generation will be phased out by 2030 under the Climate Leadership Plan. 30% of Alberta s electricity will come from renewable sources such as wind, hydro and solar by 2030. Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change...develop a Canada-wide strategy for zero-emission vehicles by 2018 and...accelerate demonstration and deployment of infrastructure to support zero-emission vehicles, such as electric-charging stations 4

Transportation Goals in Edmonton Mode shift to active modes and transit primary focus. EVs address energy use/ghg emissions from autos, taking advantage of a greening AB grid. 6

Transportation Trends Transportation sector in Edmonton accounts for 30% of GHG emissions - approximately 5 Million tonnes annually - and 42% of energy consumed. 80% of personal trips made by automobile. 80% of new vehicles sales in Alberta are trucks, vans & SUVs. Edmonton GHG Emissions (2010) Edmonton Energy Consumption (2012) Source: Statistics Canada, New Motor Vehicle Sales 7

City Actions to Date E-bus feasibility study conducted summer to fall 2014 and winter 2016, Up to 40 electric buses to be procured over next 2 years, Four EV charging stations at two City libraries. 8

The Focus on Electric Electricity is widely accessible, available and affordable Can be produced in a variety of ways - Wind, solar, geothermal, natural gas Builds energy resiliency in our transportation system Volt plugged in at Jasper Place Library Photo credits: Plugshare.com Nissan Leaf at South Edmonton Common MEC 9

A Plan to Advance Electric Vehicles The Goal: Prepare for and accelerate the uptake of EVs in Edmonton 10

Canadian and Provincial EV Trends Nearly 37,000 EVs sold in Canada as at Q2 2017 QC, ON, BC lead the way with 97% of Canadian sales Buoyed by strong policy support Total Plug-In Vehicles by Province As of December 31, 2016 Source: Fleet Carma ~800 EVs on-road in AB as of 2016-end 100% growth 2015-2016 Tesla leading the way 11

EVs in Edmonton 235 EVs on-road (2016 end) Evenly split between Battery Electric and Plug-In Hybrid ~30% of Alberta s total EVs A dozen makes and models, most popular: Tesla Models, Chevrolet Volt, Volvo XC90, Porsche Cayenne and the Nissan Leaf Also over 4,000 non-plug in hybrids Nissan Leaf charging at South Edmonton Common MEC Photo Credit: Plugshare.com Tesla charging at Southgate Mall Photo Credit: Plugshare.com Chevy Volt charging at IKEA Photo Credit: Plugshare.com 12

Research on Municipal Best Practices Policy drives accelerated EV uptake Municipalities influence EV adoption in a variety of ways: Developing an EV strategy Subsidies and incentives Charging infrastructure supports Municipal fleet purchasing Education + outreach Linking car share to EV Cities are focal point for collaboration between government, auto industry, utilities, and advocacy groups 13

Stakeholder Workshops 14

Survey Says 60% Availability of public charging stations highly impacts decision to purchase an EV Top 3 factors shaping opinions on EVs: 1. Talking with people who drive EVs 2. Seeing more of them on the road 3. Talking with family and friends 17

GHG Implications in Alberta Alberta s Renewable Electricity Program will add 5,000 MW of renewable electricity capacity by 2030, AB grid intensity projected to reduce carbon intensity by 50% grid greening policies, Power generators are announcing early retirement, Recent studies show even with coal-based grid EVs have a GHG benefit in Alberta. EV purchased today can only get greener 18

Societal Benefits 600,000 tonnes CO 2e avoided* Air quality benefits Human respiratory health issues 9,500 megajoules conserved* Reduced urban noise Compatibility with AV technology $90 million saved by EV owners* Energy resiliency * By 2040, with 32% of new car and SUV sales captured by electric vehicles. 19

Rationale for Accelerating EV Adoption Accelerated EV adopted equates to greater LT benefits A vehicle purchased today will likely remain on the road until 2029 Continues to use gasoline fuel even as the carbon intensity of the electricity grid is reduced substantially Every gasoline or diesel powered vehicle purchased today is a lost GHG opportunity for the future 20

Strategic Opportunity Areas Education & Marketing Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Incentives & Financial Tools Regulations City Leadership Collaboration, Partnerships & Advocacy 21

Curbside EV Charging Station Project City partnering to install up to 10 charging stations in high density, commercial and retail districts. Utility to own and operate, CoE providing in-kind support. Target to install all stations by end of Q2 2018. 22

Smart Transportation Action Plan Actions to prepare for and advance emerging transportation technologies - connectivity, autonomy, shared mobility and electrification. EV Strategy work will be integrated into this Plan. 23
