A Rich History of Technical Innovations To this day, BMW Motorrad engineers work to develop motorcycles with a single aim: to constantly improve motorcycling and above all make it safer. With its groundbreaking technical innovations, BMW Motorrad has set milestones in the history of motorcycling. Some of the key motorcycling world firsts for BMW Motorrad are: First telescopic fork in serial production motorcycles in 1935. First ABS system almost 25 years ago. Introduction of Telelever as a solution for front wheel suspension in 1993. First electronic suspension adjustment system ESA in a serial production motorcycle in 2004. The first motorcycle Adaptive Headlight with the introduction of the K 1600 GT and GTL in 2011. Most recently, the first semi active suspension in a serial production motorcycle DDC (Dynamic Damping Control), standard on the HP4 for its 2012 launch.
